Following Traditional Chinese Wedding Customs: Him Law Presents Betrothal Gifts to Tavia Yeung

Adorable couple Tavia Yeung (楊怡) and Him Law (羅仲謙) have officially started their pre-wedding customs.

On Thursday, a photo of Tavia with her pre-wedding gifts was posted on the Internet. Her large pile of red wedding gifts filled up the entire room; even Tavia herself could barely be seen behind them.

tavia yeung betrothal 2According to traditional Chinese wedding customs, the groom must send betrothal gifts to his soon-to-be bride’s home to confirm their engagement. These gifts include a variety of different clothes, foods and drinks, such as pastries, abalone, fruits, meat, and wine. After receiving these gifts, the bride will answer the engagement by sending dowry to the groom’s home.

Him, who grew up in the walled villages, strongly values traditional practices and did all of the preparations himself. The couple will continue to follow traditional wedding customs for their upcoming wedding banquet, which will be held on October 2. Many industry friends have already received their wedding invitations, such as Liza Wang (汪明荃), Carol Cheng (鄭裕玲), Nancy Wu (胡定欣), Power Chan (陳國邦), and much more.

  1. What’s the point of following Chinese “Traditional Customs” when you are already registered as a married couple?

    1. @opalowl
and who follows such things these days? haha lol…
Oh well, the saying of ‘ having face ‘ is still very much in trend I suppose for HK ppl…

      1. @went actually lots of asian still follow it. The traditonal one at least. Its not bad but just a lot of work!!! My family are pretty traditional so all of us followed it for our wedding.

Its actually nice to still see this tradition being followed. Its almost like yes they registered their wedding but in the chinese side, not officially married till all these custom are followed.

      2. @happybi I do agreed with you that it’s nice to keep the tradition alive as many ppl dun follow all the way thru anymore. I am very surprised that Him took the trouble. Can tell he is pretty sincere to Tavia. Keep it up

      1. @janet72 That’s exactly my question. Aren’t they already married back in March? So according to Western law (they officially registered in England), they are officially married. But according to their Chinese culture, they aren’t because their official wedding date is October?

  2. Have they really registered yet? I think I read somewhere that they haven’t, and are actually officially registering on Oct. the 2nd. Not sure though.

I saw their invitations to various celebs on weibo. It’s a very nice look, simple and clean. Not ostentatious or too frilly like I’ve seen what other Chinese wedding invitations can be. Though I am amused at seeing Tavia’s name placed first. xD
