“Four Walls” Cast Breaks into Fame: Philip Ng and Moon Lau Turn Down Million-Dollar Offer

The highly-anticipated ending for TVB’s latest hit drama A Fist Within Four Walls <城寨英雄> finally pulled down its curtains on Sunday. Whether or not the series finale had brought the tale to a satisfying conclusion is up for debate, but there is no denying that the drama had pushed all the main cast to overnight levels of fame, supporting cast included.

A Fist Within Four Walls, produced by Jazz Boon (文偉鴻), is a manhua-styled kung fu drama about a young band of heroes and their exploits in protecting the Kowloon Walled City from falling into the hands of evil forces. The drama pushed main cast members Ruco Chan (陳展鵬), Nancy Wu (胡定欣), Benjamin Yuen (袁偉豪), Philip Ng (伍允龍), Grace Wong (王君馨), and Moon Lau (劉佩玥) to become among the most-searched celebrities of the year. Even supporting cast members like Carlo Ng (吳家樂), Jimmy Au (歐瑞偉), Bella Lam (林穎彤), and Oscar Li (李嘉) are drowning in more and more job offers.

Philip Ng Turns Down Million-Dollar Offer with Moon Lau

Philip Ng’s “Lung Shing-fu” and Moon Lau’s “Audrey Or” are one of the most popular characters on the show, and their pairing is definitely among the most well-received. Many fans even hope to see Philip and Moon get together in real life, as the actors themselves admitted that they grew close after collaborating in Four Walls.

a fist within four walls still 5But it’s going to be a while until we get to see Philip and Moon together again. Due to Philip’s busy schedule of promoting his film Birth of the Dragon, the onscreen couple had no choice but to turn down many of their couple appearance offers, losing up to a million dollars.

Philip’s manager said, “It’s true that Philip got a lot more show offers [since Four Walls broadcast], but because of other work he had to turn them down.” (Lost a lot of money?) “You can’t really put it like that. The jobs we have at hand now were accepted a lot time ago, so we have to complete them before we do anything else.”

Moon said she doesn’t blame Philip for turning down the offers, saying, “I know he’s very busy. Our agencies will handle our future appearances. I’m sure there will be that opportunity!” (You just lost the chance to earn more though!) “It’s all about fate when it comes to this job!” (Will you get Philip to treat you for dinner?) “Of course I will! Because of Four Walls’s success, he’s going to have to treat me to more than one!”

At the celebration banquet for the Four Walls’ finale on Sunday, Moon and Philip were once again asked to comment on their dating rumors. Moon said, “We’re good friends. We worked together for over three months so we were around each other the most.”

Moon and Philip admitted to getting close on set. Even costar Yuen Qiu (元秋) thought they were dating. Has Philip started pursuing Moon yet? Moon said, “Nope!” (Many fans want you guys to be together!) “I know! But these things can’t just happen like in dramas.”

    1. @tiffany Except Moon Lau can handle her role with a lot more depth, nuance and control than I think Aimee could. I must say I’m really impressed by Moon – there’s not a single scene of hers that I felt was over-done, even though there were ample opportunities for her to do so. That kind of restraint especially for a newbie is doubly hard and it’s so easy for her bubbly character to become annoying. But never once was I annoyed by her. I did hear her crying scene could use some work, but I skipped that scene because I wasn’t interested in melting into a sobbing mess (esp ’cause it was SUCH a pointless end for Shing Fu. I’m still bitter about that.)

I really liked Shing Fu with Audrey. Their characters were so compatible, in a yin-and-yang kind of way. Both respective actor/actress deserve the fame they’ve received so far.

      1. @coralie It’s my first time watching her act. So many newbies nowadays lol

Surprisingly, the two supporting couples were better than the main.

Jazz Boon’s dramas use the same formula – a lot of deaths at the end. I knew Fa Man would die because her character was the too smart type. As for Shing Fu’s death? I suppose it was to have less people going up against Pudding Man. But the drama didn’t do justice to their deaths. Probably the best two characters in the drama, but their deaths were overshadowed by Kuen’s loss of sight and his romance with Tiu Lan.

      2. @tiffany Oh I see. I guess Moon Lau isn’t really that new to the scene, but she’s really improved a lot since her debut drama, “4 Girls 1 Bar.” Philip Ng isn’t really new to acting either; he’s been in the business for maybe 10 years? Just not new to TVB – he’s primarily an action choreographer/actor. His full-time job is mostly performing choreography stunts in films. I’ve noticed him ever since I learned Linda was speculatively dating him. I thought he was cute! I’m glad he’s doing so well in here and getting so much love from the audience.

I agree that his and Audrey’s relationship in the drama overshadowed Ruco’s with Nancy. I don’t think Nancy is a “relationship” actress although she and Ruco still did pretty well. Maybe another actress could’ve done better than her in that dept but she was good in all her other scenes.

And yeah, Philip’s death was totally skimmed over. They did that a lot in the drama – look at Yam Yam. It’s so unfair for such a hefty role too. But I suppose they just ran out of time. Poor planning and execution.

      3. @tiffany Moon and Philip are compatible and very natural even though it was their first collaboration. If Tiu Lan’s make up and dressing is toned down, perhaps she and Kuen Lo will look more like a couple. Tiu Lan looks like his elder sister.

      4. @coralie Moon gave life to her character…there was cuteness, liveliness, love and that pampered rich girl all in…I love it, it’s just lively. she is adorable without making viewers cringe.

that episode with Shing Fu dying is indeed sob sob…but she delivered the sadness very well. I melted into a mess with all the sobbing…and till now, I am still very disappointed that Shing Fu was killed off and in such a cruel way.

  1. While it’s true that the story lost its credibility after the pudding man twist, i nevertheless enjoyed this series very much especially the Ruco-Nancy story arc. Call me hopeless romantic, fan girl or whatever but I’m a sucker for happy endings cos when i watch a drama, i don’t like to think too much about the plot. It’s just 45 mins’ worth of entertainment for me to put up my feet and forget all the worries of the real world. Of cos if the script is good, i take that as a bonus. This drama is enjoyable to me for:
    1. awesome action scenes
    2. supporting cast who can literally out-act some of the leads eg. 3rd grandaunt, gambler dad, villains Fung Chun Mei and Fook Sau Kam
    3. Great casting of main and supporting actors (with exception of Benjamin who at his best was still inadequate. Didn’t feel a shred of sadness from him even in his saddest moments plus his kung fu moves were really stiff and unnatural and sometimes even looked rather comical).
    4. Eye candy leads especially Ruco. Love his acting and his crying scenes are never overdone, always subtle but effective. Of cos love his action scenes too and that HOT body, yummmm!
    5. First time pairing Ruco with someone of same acting calibre as him ie Nancy
    6. Awesome sexy Grace
    7. Funny moments that really make you lol to lighten up an otherwise dark plot
Will be doing re-runs for sure.

    1. @isay Agrees with you especially Point 4. Ruco is eye candy, both as father (very man) and son (cute boy who never hides his feeling, cry when he wants to cry and laugh when he wants to laugh). Love Kuen Lo, a sun-shine boy who is always positive and is able to recover quickly. He is really an “Undead King”. He is the only character in this drama that can make me cry with him.

When I was a little girl, I always admire those undead hero in the cartoons. Kuen Lo is exactly those adorable characters in the cartoons.

      Will be doing re-runs / re-runs.

    2. @isay Benjamin’s lack of sadness facing the death of Grace’s character is so obvious…he can’t seem to cry.

grace’s killer moves are amazing! even those dance moves on the stage. WOW!

  2. i’ve stop watching after ep25 and can’t watch anymore as i know most people died especially knowing grace and phillip died urghhh.

i am glad moon, grace , phillip and the supporting actors got more recognition and fame.

    1. @hannah Why in the world they introduce a “Chinese incredible hulk” into the drama but at least they did not make him green too.

      1. @critique
        @hannah
I know, the way he died was stupid over this so metal kung fu man. I pretty much skimped thru to the ending after both my favorites died and the plot was just getting more and more nonsensical esp the towards. But let’s face it, typical lame happing endings w/main leads NOT dying but other side supporting’s always do. I hate Philip Ng’s way to die b/c he was such a memorable character but the way he dies was just so weird and plain unbelievable. I especially love the part where he was opening up his own kung fu studio and the mom tells him not to get co**y and arrogant. The way he replied so good, “I don’t claim to be the best fighter but I have the most serious attitude when it comes to kung fu and that’s b/c I will be ready for the best competitor when the times comes”. That was so cool and you would expect a fair 1 on 1 kind of real good kung fu scene for him to die but the way he died w/that metal dude???? OMG… so freaking stupid in my opinion anyway. I love Ruco but he is one of my least favorite characters on this series. Nancy, I never like her much anyway and also the way she has those red lipstick and what she wears… I guess sometimes we blame the stylists? I swear, I don’t feel anything for both their characters. Ruco is older than she is but Nancy looks way older than he is in any angle. haha lol….

  3. Don’t understand why cat zhai have to die. Some more die in no value at all. At least let him die heroically……

Actually the ending is nice. Both leads together is OK. Cos too many pairs had been broken. Ruco and Nancy is really nice to watch. Can’t wait to see Ruco again!!!
