G.E.M.’s Documentary Film Flops in China Box Office

It’s already been 14 days since G.E.M. (鄧紫棋) released her documentary film in Mainland China, but according to box office gross reports, it’s not doing well at all.

Her autobiography film, titled Against the Wind <一路逆風>, was directed by Nick Wickman and had a wide release in Mainland China on January 6, 2017. Despite touring the country to promote the movie, it was a box office disappointment earning only 3 million RMB as of January 20, 2017.

A few days ago, G.E.M. attended red carpet premiere for her film in Tai Kok Tsui, which opens in Hong Kong today. Close friends, including Laurinda Ho (何超蓮), Renee Lee (李蘊), Grace Wong (王君馨), Sherman Chung (鍾舒漫), Sukie Chung (鍾舒祺), and Alfred Hui (許廷鏗), were in attendance.

G.E.M. was confronted with questions about her film’s box office disappointment in China, but the singer, known for her powerhouse vocals, said she never had expectations. Reporters reminded G.E.M. that she once expressed her wish for the film to break 100 million RMB, to which she said, “No. I was asked about my expectations for the attendance, and I responded that, it would be great if even 10 million saw the film.”

Against the Wind follows G.E.M.’s journey from being a musical student to an Asian super star. She officially started her training when she was only 15 years old and released her debut album two years later, in 2008.

“It follows a young girl’s journey,” explained G.E.M. “It talks about how she chased her dream. It’s something I believe that many youths have went through before.”

No Contact with Yoga Lin

Taiwanese singer Yoga Lin (林宥嘉), who dated G.E.M. for four years, married his girlfriend Kiki Ting (丁文琪) earlier this month. G.E.M. said she congratulated him in an interview, but they no longer remain in contact.

Asking if she would invite Yoga if she were to hold a concert in Taiwan, G.E.M., “We’ll see when the time comes! It’s been a long time, and we have all moved on. There’s no point of talking about it again.” (When will you start dating?) “I’ll tell everyone when I’m getting married. I won’t talk about my dating life before that.” (Afraid?) “I think if two people want a healthy relationship, they would be better off without the pressure of the media.”

Against the Wind did briefly mention G.E.M.’s relationship with Yoga. The two parted ways while G.E.M. was competing for the Chinese music talent show I Am a Singer <我是歌手>, the show that pushed G.E.M. to instant fame in Mainland China. In the segment, G.E.M.’s manager Cheung Tan (張丹) said G.E.M. lost her belief in fairytales after breaking up with Yoga.

G.E.M.’s friends, Laurinda Ho and Renne Lee, remarked the irony of the situation—while G.E.M. was enjoying the fame and success of her career, she was at the lowest point of her relationship life.

  1. When people make movies about living artists, those movies rarely do well. It’s better if she wrote a book. It’s a different story when she dies though.
