Grace Chan and Sisley Choi Reflect on Struggles They Have Faced

Grace Chan (陳凱琳) and Sisley Choi (蔡思貝) signed as TVB artistes after being crowned Miss Hong Kong 2013 and first runner-up respectively. They have since been heavily promoted by TVB, with Grace being involved in three of the dramas presented at the 2015 TVB Sales Presentation, and Sisley given a leading role after only one year into her career. It was, however, not always a bed of roses for both ladies, as they reveal their struggles in a recent interview.

Sisley Was Clueless About Acting

Having no acting experience, Grace and Sisley initially both found acting to be very difficult. Sisley reflected, “The first time I acted before the camera, my mind was completely blank and I had no idea what to do, nor what gestures to make. I could not understand the cues in the script, and I was clueless as to the right emotion to convey when speaking my lines. I was so stressed that I developed insomnia. Thankfully, the people I worked with were very kind and encouraging, teaching me to relax.” Grace also revealed that initially, whenever she finished filming a scene, she would ask, “Is everything okay?” and had to gradually learn to trust the director.

Sisley was also bothered by the frequent gossip reports linking her romantically to her male co-stars. When Young Charioteers <衝線> co-star Him Law (羅仲謙) saw Sisley turn up for work in low spirits, he encouraged Sisley not to be bothered by the rumors. Sisley said, “Perhaps I have so many rumors because I treat members of both genders equally, and have no qualms being good friends with guys. Luckily I have become more conscious of the presence of paparazzi wherever I go!”

Grace Values Friendship with Sisley

Grace usually laughed the gossip reports, but admitted that she got along very well with Louis Cheung (張繼聰) and Alan Wan (大隻仔), “Alan feels like my little brother; he’s very playful and outgoing. Louis is very mature and has a lot of depth; he’s given me a lot of advice for filming and is my good friend.”

Rumors regarding the purported rivalry between Grace and Sisley have also been rife. Grace revealed that these rumors bothered her far more than the romantic rumors, “Perhaps it’s due to my upbringing overseas, where the focus is on individual achievement rather than competition, but I’m very upset by the rumors. Sisley and I are completely different in terms of personality, image and acting style. I really don’t see a need for comparison. I’m just glad that our friendship has not been affected; whenever an article appears about us, we would call each other to make sure that no one’s feelings are hurt. I wish the media would criticize me separately, rather than compare the two of us. I really don’t want to lose Sisley as a friend.”

  1. I dont know why they are promoting Sisly Choi Grace im ok with but why SC is it because she comes from a wealthy background and how they hell she became the 2nd runner up for Miss HK 2012 anywayzzz she dont have the looks at all

    1. ..I think it is the other way around. Grace comes a wealthier background than Sisley lol. Well than I guess she has the brains over the other contestants hence the 2nd runner up placement.

Tbb promotes whoever they like, obviously these two seem to be their favourites. There are many existing talented artists over these two and yet I don’t see them getting promoted any time soon, or if ever. Hence Looks doesn’t always get you far in promotion..

    2. i don’t like sisley either. i think she’s not good enough to be ms hk. i don’t know why they say she’s got brains. from what i remembered, she’s just a uni grad…not even from that good of a school or studied a very difficult major.

      1. I don’t like Grace. I think she’s not good enough to be Ms HK.

And btw, uni grads have brains too, and they don’t have to be in a top school or take a difficult major to have good combo of EQ and IQ.

    3. Sisley probably kisses up to the executives really well like Priscilla!

      1. well, at least priscilla’s got the looks although she’s got no bod…. i’ve not seen her hosting yet, didn’t she get some award in hosting? is she any good?

    4. I don’t know for other people, but, when I watch the Miss HK 2012 pageant, I actually prefer Sisly Choi over Grace. Of the many contestants, she’s one of the few that stick on my mind.

    5. first runner up. she’s easier to watch than GC, who supposedly has the look

    6. I disagree. I would rephrase into this: I dont know why they are promoting Grace Chan. Sisly Choi im ok with but why GC????

Hongkongers are weird to like Grace so much, she’s nothing, not in looks and all.

The only saving grace is, she can act quite okay, up to the standard expected of any newbie, and on that note, is not bad in the area.

      1. I don’t like both but Grace Chan first time acting isn’t bad or maybe I was expecting her to be bad so she surpassed my expectation by being not unnatural. But she hasn’t come to any enotional scenes yet so it might be too early to tell.

Sisley is purely raw. She can’t even speak naturally and she’s not a looker.

      2. At least Sisley has an excuse to act badly. She’s new and inexperienced but can potentially get better. What excuse is there for Linda Chung, who’s been in the industry for over a decade and still can’t act? And let’s not even get started on Myolie or Fala. Just watch Tiger Cubs II and Triumph in the Skies II and you’ll realize Sisley is actually performing as expected in her first series. Just hope that she’ll improve and not end up like Linda and Myolie.

    7. Please get your facts straight, Grace was winner and Sisley was 1st RU at the 2013 pageant.

  2. What struggles? It has been pretty much a smooth ride for them since they have been crowned miss hong kong. Their struggles is not compared to those who been trying to make a name for themselves in the hk entertainment industry for the past 10-15 years.

    1. Absolutely agreed , what struggles , not even a year and they are given leading roles , so unfair for those who is good and been in TVB for years !!!! In fact i dont like both of them

    2. Good points! I agree that they do not even struggle much if at all and they are already whining. But one of the factors of success in this circle,in life or any profession is luck which is something they seem to have. They have a very road ahead and if they do not toughen up,they may end up leaving the industry.

      1. Opps, had a typo in my email so suddenly have a different icon. Meant to say have a very long road… Gosh,I need the edit button.

      2. Hi HTS, I had the same problem too with the email details disappearing now…

Jayne, any chance of rectifying this and change it back to the old function where email and details are stored?

      3. Puff and HeTieshou,
Our tech admin is aware of the situation and will address as soon as he gets the chance. Thanks for everyone’s patience!

      4. Hi Puff,
Thanks for your message, I thought that I was the only one. I got lazy to post since we always had to type in our username and email each time. I once forgot to and had to go back and type everything all over again. What a pain. I really hope that Jayne can fix that soon.

    3. Agree, When I first read the title, I was thinking what struggles? Everytime I read news about them it’s always like ” we went through ups and downs, obstacles, we went through so much things”.
They’re truly lucky to be given leading roles and When I read about them it’s always like the life is so hard or I work really hard kind of vibe

      1. I agree with you. These 2 newbies are luckier than those who’ve been struggling for ages like Eunis Yiu and they say they’ve had to struggle!? The cheek of them!

  3. I feel sorry for these girls heavily promoted which is good but working so hard and only getting 7k a month from tvb

  4. I thought Sisley has X factor just like Kate Tsui. She acted not too bad and after seeing her on screen, I know why TVB promote her….cause she is just different from other actresses….

  5. Grace surpassed my expectation so far. She’s comfortable to watch. Sisley isn’t that natural, her way of speaking is a bit unnatural.

    1. grace is pretty good for her first acting role. pretty natural. probably b/c the role isn’t too difficult to portray yet.

      1. the role is basically just her in real life…except she’s a little overboard with the cuteness…

  6. I see a lot of people praising Grace on her acting so far in “Overachievers” but tbh, her role isn’t even hard. That’s the thing. It’s the typical “sister” role. Whereas Sisley’s character imo is a little harder being a female boxer. I don’t think any of these two are good at acting. Luckily they’re still young and are new in this whole thing, so hopefully they’ll improve.

    1. I think Grace is a better actress than Sisley and I don’t think it is because her role is easier to act. So far I don’t see what’s so hard with Sisley’s role. Not to mention this is actually Sisley’s 2nd time acting (Her first time is in Ox Head) while Overachievers is Grace’s first series so Sisley is more experienced than her.

      1. Really? I sure do think acting as a female boxer is a lot harder than a typical rich daughter.

  7. As far as I can tell she is still clueless. Grace has the upperhand.

  8. I just think they are both too skinny!! Nancy Wu looks big in comparison to them both!

  9. So many compared Grace Chan to Michelle Reis in terms of looks. Excuse me. Grace looks nothing like Michelle Reis, but more like Michelle Saram. I find her an outcast in the family in Overachivers. In photos she looks pretty, but when you actually see her onscreen and moving around, she’s so anorexic-like.

Some praised her acting, but she’s pretty much portraying herself in real life. What’s so hard about it? Grace had some hosting gigs after MHK. Idk about Sisley, but obviously Grace is more favored.

    1. So you’re saying that because someone is “anorexic-like”, they can’t be pretty?

  10. Not going to lie, I was skeptical about these two having leads/prominent acting roles but I’m really surprised at Grace, she’s natural in front of the camera, this girl really does have it all, it’s no wonder the big shots at TVB like her so much. However Sisley on the otherhand, is still a bit stiff in her acting, I find her hard to watch, but she’s still new, so there’s a lot of room for improvement and growing.
Good luck to the both of them!

    1. but i see the reason why grace is more natural than we had expected is because her character doesn’t require too much, it’s pretty much just her in real life. there’s not a lot of challenging emotional scenes. i’m more anticipating the later scenes where it seems like she’ll be raped or something, at least from the opening video that’s what it looks like.

  11. To be honest, I find these two to be quite good! Better than my initial expectations. Reminds me of the younger cast of Never Dance Alone, which hopefully it would be as good or even better.

  12. First glance at the photo and I thought it was a pretty boy giving Grace a peck on her cheek? Just saying….

  13. I don’t get the bash towards Grace. She looks very beautiful and has a good voice. I expect her to do very well in the future.
