Huang Xiaoming Too Handsome to Be a Serious Actor?

Huang Xiaoming (黃曉明) is the latest actor to appear in Luisa Lai’s (黎芷珊) popular TVB talk show, The Best Actor  <最佳男主角>. Other than discussing his love life with Qin Lan (秦嵐), his secret dream lover Vicki Zhao (趙薇), and current girlfriend, Angelababy, Xiaoming touched on his career, his look, and a little bit of his mindset.

Acting Career

Huang Xiaoming is labeled as “the number one siu sang from Mainland China”.  Xiaoming strongly disagrees with this label as he feels that not only is it untrue, it also gives him stress and pressure. Instead, Xiaoming wishes to be called a nice gentleman–one that respects his parents, works hard, acts friendly to everyone, and acts responsibly.

Xiaoming has also been called a Louis Koo (古天樂) lookalike, an Andy Lau (劉德華) lookalike, and even a Chow Yun Fat (周潤發) lookalike. Other than Louis’s tan complexion and hairstyle, Xiaoming feels there is no similarity. Xiaoming said his work ethics resemble Andy’s, and admires Chow Yun Fat due to his personality. Of the three, Huang would like to be like his idol, Chow Yun Fat. Working with him in The Last Tycoon <大上海> gave Xiaoming the impression that Chow was a true gentleman. Chow never displayed an arrogant side just because he is an international star; he is someone Huang can always ask for advice in acting when needed.

Too Handsome

One problem with Huang Xiaoming is that he may be too handsome for movies — Director Wong Jing (王晶) once said people are more focused on his looks than his acting talent. On handsomeness, Xiaoming was thankful to his parents, but believes that handsomeness is irrelevant, as the most important element is putting his heart into his portrayal of his character. Many rumors claim that Xiaoming only cares about his looks. Looking past that stage, Xiaoming believes that image is important only when you are working in some limited roles. In real life, he is actually very relaxed and laid back.

Toughest Role

Xiaoming did not hesitate to pick Yang Guo in The Return of Condor Heroes <神鵰俠侶> as the toughest role he has ever worked on. It was a physically challenging role, and Xiaoming found jumping and rolling down from a waterfall and submerging in cold water to be extremely tough to film.

Criticized for his emotionless acting in the past, Xiaoming said, “I have improved, but just by a tad bit.” He was supposedly a nice kid back in school, and did not start dating girls until adulthood. Although in Xiaming’s world, he is always a little kid, as he adores toys collections, and loves cute items. To display the child in him, he gave an impression of his favorite anime character from Crayon Shin-chan for the viewers.

  1. I have to agree. I focus on his looks rather than his acting, lol Ok, I never thought HXM was that good. He’s poses a lot in his series.

  2. HA! HA! HA! HA! HA!

Probably the lamest and the funniest excuse. Louis Koo, you are ugly! Is that the reason why his transition is smooth? Ekin Cheng? Not handsome! Aaron Kwok! Bleh! Andy Lau! Hah!

Maybe true since China actors in movies are ugly? Maybe?

One of the funniest article, ever!!

    1. an Ekin Cheng diss? I must step it! You are wrong Funn, Ekin is handsome as hell.

  3. Absolutely. Ludicrous.

Only talk if his acting is on par with his looks. Until then, stop spouting such nonsense.

    1. But then his looks has to be on par with his acting! He will never achieve equilibrium as both aspects will never be on par with one another!

  4. The Return of condor heroes was a good dramas!!! But I didn’t now he was the actor in it.

I don’t really watch much of his dramas, but Summer’s Desire was not a good acting, but it has a good plot. However, I like the old Royal Tramp more than the one he act in… >>

He is cute looking, not handsome. But, it’s true that he needs to improve his acting, like The Return of condor heroes…

  5. I thought he was beyond handsome in ” Shanghai Tan ” 😀
Must be honest, i was really drawn into his handsomeness at first. I thought his acting is quite good too :)He does resemble Louis Koo and Chow Yun Fat esp in Shanghai Tan.

  6. Wow some girls out there actually think he’s not handsome?
I’m a dude and I thought every female out there would find him attractive.

    1. I went to search for his photos on Google. He is not my type of handsome but Louis Koo is.

  7. I agree. There is no denying that he is handsome. His acting is just fine. But if you watch his latest works (2011-present), you’ll notice how his acting improved a lot.

  8. His acting is not that good. His handsome look also enhanced by plastic surgery.

    1. I stan this flawless being. Therefore, every other idol is irrelevant.

  9. i haven’t watched any of his dramas yet but he does look quite handsome. now i am looking forward to that drama with ruby lin.

  10. I really like him in Shanghai Bund and Return of the Condor Heroes 2006 (the latter I think as the best version imo). I look forward to his lead role in ‘The Guillotines’ directed by Andrew Lau.

  11. LOL @ people here judging his acting based on ROTCH ’06 and Shanghai Bund, as if these were his latest works.

  12. I disagree, he shouldnt thank his parents for his looks, thank his plastic surgeon for the great job 😉

    1. I don’t think he had that much plastic surgery since he still overall looks like his old self… Therefore, he can still thank his parents. I saw his photos when he was a child and he looks pretty much the same for the msot part.

    2. lol how come people think that been handsome and a star is aka PS, some people is actually born handsome. Some people actually has the look from the begginning of.

    3. Looking at his childhood photo he’s already charming and cute.

  13. Goodlooking??! Maybe if he does something about that receding hairline and witch-like pointy chin.

  14. Ohh is the guy I once took wrong and though he was Louis Koo haha…

  15. yes gotta agree HXM is too handsome and charming that make me stare at him and not concentrate on his acting haha. He’s a talented actor.

  16. I think he looked his best in SHANGHAI TAN. I really don’t think he looks that good with that funky hairstyle and he’s quite thin now. He needs to put on a few pounds. Maybe if he has more fat on his face, he will look healthier 🙂 Nonetheless…… I HEART HXM (*_~)
I love manly looking guys like Takeshi kaneshiro, Louis Koo and HXM ( Only In Shanghai Tan)

  17. What a double standard. Chinese actresses are never judged by their acting but more for their looks.
