Jackie Chan Elected as New President of Hong Kong Performing Artistes Guild

Jackie Chan (成龍) has been elected as the new President of the Hong Kong Performing Artistes Guild, a non-profit labor association representing local artists, singers, and stage performers.

Since Eric Tsang (曾志偉) stepped down as President of the Guild last October, the position remained vacant for many months. Anthony Wong (黃秋生) was interested in running for President, but crossed Secretary Astrid Chan (陳芷菁) when he became intolerant of the member application and approval process. The fiasco drew criticism against Anthony’s qualifications, as he was unable to resolve a simple problem in grace. He also expressed frustration that he was no longer interested in leading the Guild, and even spoke about removing Astrid from her position since she was not a “people person”.

Despite this, Eric thanked Anthony for his suggestions and encouraged him to run again next year.

Jackie has previously served as President of the Guild and was elected again due to his prestige and influence within the industry. However, his busy filming schedule and international promotional tours caused many to worry whether this will only be a figurative title for him. Jackie’s limited availability may make it difficult to lead and fulfill responsibilities for the Guild.

Despite Jackie’s absence yesterday at the Guild’s press conference, Eric defended the new President. “A lot of old friends were worried about what happened last time. People such as Alan Tam (譚詠麟), Jacky Cheung (張學友), and Jackie have already been President. Everyone is concerned about the Guild and offer a variety of opinions, but in the end, we believe that Jackie was the best fit for the role.  I’ve asked Andy Lau (劉德華), and Jacky Cheung, and they think this is good too. Even though people’s opinions differ, we think Jackie is the best choice. Jackie doesn’t reside in Hong Kong often, so he needs a strong team to support him.”

    1. i had hoped for chow yun fat but i know there is no chance he will do this.

  1. Um, the article has some facts wrong….Jacky Cheung was never President of the guild. In all the years that the guild has been in existence, there have only been 5 Presidents (Michael Hui, Jackie Chan, Anita Mui, Alan Tam, and Eric Tsang).

With that said, it makes sense that Jackie Chan would be elected President, as there aren’t too many people left in the industry who are qualified and want to do the job. I also feel that Jackie will only be President in title though, since he doesn’t have time to deal with the day to day stuff.

    1. yes you right.he is just president in name, but actually there are four vice president to look over his task, but he is truly the one with the final decision.

  2. Well, although Jackie Chan is not without flaws, you cant argue with his status and merits as an actor. The most important thing being he is a million times better choice than Anthony Wong. The guild has been saved from the hands of being under him at least.

  3. i feel that an almost always absent jackie chan as president is still way better than having anthony wong (someone who seems to be unable to control his temper)

    1. I know its impossible but i truly hope he stops sprouting politically incorrect statements in his capacity as chairman of the guild.

  4. Jackie Chan is the best for Hong Kong Performing Artistes Guild. Prior to many big names have stepped down from the position and the incident with Astrid and Anthony it is apparent that Hong Kong Performing Artistes Guild have many issues. too many chiefs not enough indians.

  5. Great. Now more starlets are going to be molested and they can’t even bring their sob story to the actor’s guild.

      1. Don’t you know about Jackie Chan’s illegitimate daughter, who he does not acknowledge?

  6. Not surprised by this outcome. I think the guild has to start electing people who will actually run the guild and fight for its members, not just high profile people. It’s a labor union after all so it needs someone whose job is to run the guild, not people who can’t devote time to it. Look at any major labor union and the president is actually employed by the union to fight for them. The industry won’t change until they change the nature of the office.

    1. anthony? he looks like he’s living in a dark world as triad person, a rapist, a molester, a pedophile ring leader, he even adopted edison chen to be his godson.. yucks!

    2. However, Anthony lacks leadership and people skills. See what he does when he doesn’t get want he wants. He is a great actor, but not a convincing leader to lead a group

    3. The reason for not choosing Anthony is because they are much like him or much worse.
