Jason Chan, the New Leading Man

British born Jason Chan (陳智燊) leads a TVB drama for the first time in currently aired Missing You <幸福摩天倫>. Jason was given the big promotion due to his leading man look and the recent migration of TVB artists towards the more lucrative mainland China market.

Jason gained recognition for hosting the popular lifestyle program, Dolce Vita <港生活港享受>. He left a hospital administrator job in Great Britain to join TVB in 2005 and follow his acting dreams. He was simultaneously cast in various minor roles in TVB dramas since 2006, finally gaining greater public recognition in last year’s Be Home for Dinner <誰家灶頭無煙火>.

This year Jason is very fortunate to have received a tremendous opportunity to play the leading role for the first time in the new drama, Missing You, due to the recent departure of numbers of leading men in TVB. With his good looks and a strong educational background, Jason is being highly promoted to become the next TVB heartthrob. It is reported that Jason is a strong favorite of TVB executive, Catherine Tsang (曾勵珍).

Jason is grateful to have a chance to portray the kind and passionate social worker, Sze Yik Him, in Missing You. Jason was nervous before filming and revealed, “I was afraid that I won’t be able to handle it and worried that my acting would not be good enough. However, once the filming began, I had no time to worry so I was able to get into character quickly.”

With the help and support of his costar, Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣), Jason was able to ease into the role without any problems. With their similar background growing up overseas, Jason and Linda had a great working relationship as they would often share their experiences about their early career. “I was training in the TVB acting class and had a very minor role as customer buying a bouquet of flowers from Linda, who played a sales clerk at a flower shop. Even though the scene lasted only a minute or two, Linda was still able to remember that moment; I was so touched.”

Jason is especially grateful that TVB gave him a chance to shine by casting him in prominent roles in recent dramas and has had a number of hosting jobs this year. To show his appreciation, Jason will work very hard to improve his acting skills and prove he has the quality to become the new leading man.

With his charm and fluency in English, Jason is considered to be a great catch as a potential boyfriend. However, he stated that he will be too busy focusing on his career now to have any romantic relationships with anyone.

    1. He’s good looking but to get pushed up to a first leading actor?? seriously..my mum and i both support Power Chan. Why not push him up to first lead?? stupid TVB

      1. wats height to do with anything?? Power’s got talent especially the roles he has been playing lately..from being a villian to being the good guy again..TVB needs to open their eyes as their are alot of talented people out there who happens to be working with them for quite some while now…like for 15 years…u wonder why so many artist leave.

      2. of course height is one of the factor to pushing a talent. Everyone knows power is talented but he is not the ideal image of a top star that tvb desire. This is not the 80s, 90s anymore. look back at the last decade of your leading stars. (raymond, ron, joe, bosco, kenneth, kevin, mosses) they’re all 180cm+ and good looking. NOt everyone is as lucky as wayne who got the support of management and a breakout role in rosy business. I support guys like power, johnson lee, raymond chou etc. but thats reality.

      3. If Power Chan is taller and handsomer, he surely will have been more lead roles.

However, if TVB still wants to promote Power Chan, they can custom-made a script to suit his appearance and built. Wayne Lai isn’t tall or handsome either, but got a custom-made role, Chai Gou, and he shone.

      4. I meant “custom-made a character” to suit Power Chan’s appearance and built”, backed up by a good script. Power Chan will definitely shine.

    2. I agree WITH Bob. As superficial as it sounds, it is true. Wayne Lai is one of the luckier people to be honest. Wayne Lai had worked for decades before he saw a glimpse of success. Power Chan is getting there. . but not quite. The Confidant just ended, YOU CAN’T EXPECT people to just catapult him into leading roles..

      1. Nothing is impossible if TVB wants to do it. TVB can do anything they wish.

    3. He got looks but no talent which seems to be a winning combination these days with many celebs…

      1. and the most impotant: no charisma. he will be a good doctor type but not as chai gou or laughing gor.

      2. Yes I agree, I can’t see him in the lead role, lacks screen charisma.

  1. A person who saw the series says he is good looking but a terrible actor because the way he speaks is so insincere, like he is a villain pretending to be nice. I agree.

    1. I disagree with the insincere part but it certainly sounds choppy.

      1. right, not insincere but i would say not convincing enough the way he speak thus not enough character a litle bit softy.

      2. I kinda found Power Chan attractive in this Taiwanese series he acted in many many years back.. think it was Legendary Siblings with Jimmy Lin and Alec Su…

    2. Well, perhaps we will have to accept Jason Chan just as most people accepted Rebecca Zhu. After all, they both are newbies in drama series, though Jason acted some sitcoms.

      1. Jason is not a newbie. He’s been in the industry for quite a while playing the extras, smaller support roles and guest starring in ‘separate cases/story’ series (remember seeing him in ‘Only You’).

    3. Sadly, these days good looks seems to go further than actual talent…

      1. only good looks comes not far i think.you must have a combination of good look talent, hard work and connections.

      2. You must have talent, like LF, no talent in acting. In performing maybe, but jot acting. Can’t best to watch him.

    4. Is it just me or does this guy have that villain/Ruco chan vibe…even when he’s playing a good guy…you feel like he’s gonna turn bad. Personally, I don’t find him good looking at all…he’s ok but nothing memorable.

  2. Everyone deserve a change to shine. Either you make it or break it. Jason is good, tall and handsome. Would be better with a mustache. Hahaha

  3. mmm. leading role… it is a big no for me
Watching Missing You is more a story guest like law lan etc…

  4. He’s not horrible but he’s not great either. I just don’t think he has the leading man quality right now. He portrays every character the same and I don’t think he’s very natural in delivering his lines.

  5. He is a devout Christian and like the Christian girls is still a virgin

    1. what does being a devout Christian have to do w/acting. If you can’t act you can’t act. Maybe preying might help your confidence level…

    2. You think he’s still a virgin? I don’t think so. If he is, I can devirginize him. Hahaha

  6. Jason .. Leading man?
Even with Linda in that series, I won’t waste my time watching it!
He can’t even get my attention being the 3rd, let alone the leading man ==!!
For those comparing him with Rebecca, lorrr, he’s been acting for so many years n being compared with a TOTALY NEWBIE ==?!!
And I don’t find him handsome, Joel, Oscar, Vincent are so much better looking than him!!
He looks n acts gay to me xD

  7. Why is Jason suddenly become a lead actor? I don’t even notice him last time.

    1. Well this is TVB here… They promote people that should not be promoted and neglect ones that should get promoted… This is nothing new at all…

      1. I agree. He must have connections with higher executives to get lead role this fast without the ability.

      2. tvb simply dont have any new talent now that meets the requirements of the level they used to be. like gallen, louis, ekin, chilam, kwong wa,all gone.and they will loose kevin and raymond too about not too long time i think.

  8. though jason chan is good looking but he is still not up to par of 1st lead yet…TVB should promote Edwin Siu, Ben Wong to 1st lead..then promote matt yeung, Vince, vincent wong and Sammy Shum to 2nd lead..

    1. I agree. Jason is not 1st lead material. Okay for lifestyle programs but acting not really his thing. He talks well so TVB should consider phasing him in for hosting shows. I’ve not notice any difference in his acting in the few series he has been in.

      1. Agree, hosting might be his thing, tvb shouldn’t waste good hosting talent on series.

    2. They’re already promoting Edwin to lead since he’s one of the leads for Big Wheel (w/ Ruco and Linda) and Rosy3 (w/ Wayne and Myolie)

  9. I like him. He has this British gentleman feel that is rare among TVB actors. He’s not a powerhouse actor like Power Chan, but, his acting is decent enough that he won’t ruin a series for me.

    1. Jason doesn’t give a lead actor feeling. His acting is wooden and emotionless kind of acting and despite being good looking he’s lacking of charisma. He’s only reading out his script as if he’s hosting a show. The series is saved by the guest stars.

    2. I don’t know about that….I’m not a fan. In that serious w/Natalie and Ruco, I hated his acting. I liked the Natalie’s co-worker much more. He was funny.

    3. Have you heard him speak in English? Man, I envy him.

His acting is decent. I also agree with how his acting isn’t bad enough to ruin a series for me.

      1. Jason was born and raised in London, England, and is very well educated with a bachelor’s degree on Ancient and Modern Chinese literature at the School of Oriental and African Studies, and a master’s degree in economics at the University of London. After graduation, Jason worked in a management position at a hospital, but quit his job soon after deciding on an entertainment career in Hong Kong

  10. quit promoting him if he does not have the talent to act, offer him the hosting job instead ( eric tsang should retire from hosting the miss hongkong pageant and music awards ) besides, jason chan looks better than any of the super trio guys, haha

  11. I am not a big fan of Jason Chan, but he seems to be a nice and good looking guy. Agree that TVB should let him act more 2nd lead roles before moving him up to 1st lead roles. There are a few more good support actors to be promoted before Jason Chan, such as Vincent Wong, Edwin Siu, Ben Wong, and Him Law. These guys are more experienced than Jason.

    1. to me,all the actors you mentioned no one have enough (good charisma/jeng hee) to become lead actor.but i think they are all very convincing as top villain type.

      1. I don’t think so. They can be 1st lead actors if they get the chance. Since they acted so well as villains, people always remembered them as villains.

  12. TVB should stop casting inexperienced actors in leading roles unless they are as good as actors in American television series I guess. How many actors or actresses can really catch our attention in their debut roles? I can only think of Mandy Wong. And even so, she was only in a supporting role.

  13. Much better than Ron. Ron is a mad dog. Jason is cute and innocent.

    1. LOL, have you actually seen people who use steroids? The effect of it is pretty apparent, and he doesn’t look like he took any, though it could be a possibility.

  14. Jason is good looking but not charismatic. His acting is just marginal. His potential as an actor is so so, as he hasn’t got the attraction and charisma to be the 1st lead. He better stays as a host and 2nd lead for further development.

  15. He might be good looking, but he needs major works on his acting skill. And the new drama isn’t too good either, I tried two episode …

  16. don’t think he is good looking. not a fan of him at all. he is like the only male lead in the series right? (not 100% sure since i didn’t watch his new series) but funny how raymond didn’t get an only lead role for ages…

  17. I have to admit, Jason is one good looking lead. But when I saw Power Chan in the first few episodes, I wowed. Power Chan is so good. Like what others said, Power leading at least one drama next year would put him in the limelight and show what he’s capable of. I believe if Power had the opportunity to lead and land himself a good role, he has a chance for the TV King in the near future. Jason needs some improvement, though he’s not bad in the current drama. Too bad they are in graveyard time slots where nobody would remember it when the awards come by.

    1. Power Chan is just the younger version of Wayne Lai. He has tons of potentials to be a 1st lead actor, but he needs a character that suits him and backed up by a good storyline. He will surely outshine many 1st lead actors in TVB, same as Nancy Wu for female artistes.

      1. Beside good acting, to become a star of TVB one’s need luck and most important which camp one’s belong.

Power no longer young, he about 44, Wayne now about 48.Year 2009 Wayne acted as Char Kau in Rosy Business, his age at that time about 44-45

May the Force be with you (Power Chan)

      2. Good luck, Power Chan. Hope you will shine again in your next drama series. You are a very good actor. Sometimes an artiste just needs one opportunity to act a good character, and he will outshine everyone else.

  18. He is good looking, but lead actor? He is way awful!!!! even in his latest series with Linda Chung. He is way too wooden and not even engaging.

  19. I was surprised that he was actually the lead in the series. His acting is not up to scratch at all, he needs to have been in more varied roles first because it seems like he can only play the goodie boy roles at the moment.
