Joey Yung Cuts Ties with Father Over Financial Woes

When Joey Yung (容祖兒) was 15 years old, her parents filed for divorce and she was brought up by her mother. Despite their poor relationship, Joey has been paying all of her father’s debt in the past few years. However, this time, his father’s debt collectors went as far as to plaster posters on the walls surrounding Joey’s apartment. Joey had no choice but to officially draw the line between her and her father, Yung Kam Fai (容錦輝).

Joey Finally Draws The Line

Joey’s manager, Mani Fok (霍汶希), announced that Joey would no longer be responsible for Joey’s father’s debts and will no longer respond towards his issues.

When the statement was released, Joey’s father stated that Joey never gave him money to start up a business and has never paid for any of his debt.

Upset at her father’s accusations, Joey released the Letter of Commitment that his father signed three years ago.

The letter, dated May 18, 2011, clearly stated that Joey’s father was steeped in debt and has been asking Joey to pay for most of his overdue bills. The letter declared that he has never taken up on his responsibilities as a father. The letter also indicated that upon signing the agreement, Joey would pay for his debts for the last time and he would no longer be allowed to ask for any financial help again. If Joey’s father should ever break the agreement, he would have to pay back all the money Joey has lent him over the years.

Although the numbers were purposely blacked out, it is estimated that Joey has given her father millions of dollars over the years.

Mani explained, “They’ve broken off communication already and this is the only way to settle things. Joey feels helpless because she has already done everything a daughter can. Joey has repeatedly given money to her father, and the company finally decided to release the Letter of Commitment because they wanted to set the record straight. They don’t want to hurt anyone. We at EEG believe that [Joey’s father’s] statement was influenced by greed and simply to provoke us.”

  1. quite painful to do .. joey gotta be hurting from this 🙁

family is one thing you really can’t cut ties with. there will always be an emotional baggage lingering ..

      1. What?! Okay, his duty as a father is quite poor , but how can you tell him to ‘go and die’ ?? I’m sure Joey wouldn’t want her father to go and die even for the trouble he has put himself and also herself into. It’s sad to see Joey having to cut ties with her father and to see her own father accuse her of false help. But Don’t tell someone else’s father to die.

  2. Having a daughter being so successful this father should have gotten back into a normal life rather than going into more debts … he sorta asked for it, I guess Joey is very heartbroken.

  3. What’s with these wastrel parents of movie stars?
Nick Tse, Choi Siu fen, Nickie Wu practically had to work like mules to pay back debt incurred by irresponsible parents.

    1. In Nicholas and Nicky’s cases,it is more understandable because I heard their parents had failed businesses so they ended up in debt and it was not due to gambling. Business can make or break you so I guess you cannot blame their parents in those cases. In Ada’s case and Joey’s case, their mother and father gambled which is not anyone’s fault but their own. I remember a Koraan actress who was only 23 that committed suicide because she got tired of paying off gambling debts for her mother and brother. I feel it is so sad when any family member(s) indulge in gambling. Gambling can break ties, families apart, ruin your life, etc but sadly once it becomes an addiction it is hard to get rid of it.

      1. Meant to say Korean. It is sad how many Korean artists commit suicide due to various reasons.

  4. I feel sorry for her, I really do. It must be such a burden she has had to carry, not just financial burden but emotional burden.

  5. Poor Joey. You have done everything that a daughter should do.

  6. she took a good decision, there is just one solution for such ppl and thats cut all the ties otherwise they will never learn their lesson.

  7. no matter how rich joey is, at the rate her father gambles, no amount of money is sufficient.

  8. Tough love when parents want their kids to learn the hard way…so turn the tables and give “tough love” to her father so he can learn the hard way as well.

  9. I give full support to Joey for what she simply had to do, and that is, to stop giving her father any more financial support for his gambling debts. He treats her like a bottomless pit but should he never try stop his weakness for gambling soon even the pit will be dry.

    1. Yes. i too had someone in my family that repeatedly gambled more than their income. We initially pooled our savings to save him but eventually, we had to let him fall in order for him to pick himself up. It was a very difficult decision to make at the time and we were blamed for being heartless for years, but after a decade, we knew we made the right choice on seeing how he has changed today.

I support Joey in cutting ties. Her fatjer should not take her for granted and should take thee responsibility for his own mistakes.
