Joyce Cheng Dropped From Endorsement Deal Due to Weight Gain?

Joyce Cheng (鄭欣宜) will no longer be the spokeswoman for slimming and beauty institute Sau San Tong (修身堂), and some say her recent weight gain and arrogant attitude may be to blame.

Joyce became Sau San Tong’s poster child of weight loss after dropping 93 pounds from her 235-pound frame. Her success gave hope to many local women, and brought business to Shirley Cheung’s (張玉珊) slimming company. With a healthier physique, Joyce was given many opportunities in the entertainment industry. Since her debut, she has released two music albums and participated in several dramas and films. She continued her weight loss effort despite a busy schedule, down to 128 pounds at her fittest.

Even though things were going well for Joyce’s career, last year she officially announced her break up from boyfriend of 5 years, Mark Ryan. While filming this year’s Chinese New Year movie I Love Hong Kong 2013 <2013我愛HK 恭喜發財>, the press noticed that Joyce had gained a significant amount of weight. Most recently, reports claimed that Joyce has ballooned up to 180 pounds.

Some speculate that her steady weight gain is damaging her relationship with Sau San Tong. At a recent grand opening event for Sau San Tong’s Shanghai flagship center, Anita Yuen (袁詠儀) appeared as the event’s special guest, but Joyce was nowhere to be seen. Sources claimed that Sau San Tong is hesitant to show off Joyce in public after an earlier embarrassment when an audience member loudly and publicly commented on Joyce’s weight.

In addition, there are rumors that Joyce has taken all the credit for her fitness success. The 26-year-old allegedly told others that Shirley Cheung had no hand in her weight loss journey, and that she had achieved the impressive results all on her own with dance exercises. Joyce’s attitude reportedly caused conflict with Shirley, who has decided not to renew the young star’s endorsement deal.

Reporters reached out to Shirley regarding Joyce’s spokeswoman status. When asked for reasons why Joyce was not invited to Sau San Tong’s Shanghai opening, Shirley replied, “Our contract has ended so we did not specifically reach out to her. She is not ready to lose weight again. She has been losing weight for a long time. I would not force her to continue if she doesn’t want to. She is a grown-up, it is honestly difficult for me to manage her. The most important thing is for her to be happy!”

  1. Give her another year or so and she will ballloon back to her original size of a couple hundred pounds………she is destined to look just like her mother…..the slim-look over the last few years was not sustainable when you eat the way she does.

  2. Losing is hard and can be easy but to maintain it will be super hard. I been through weight lose and I am trying to maintain it.

  3. I feel bad for her and hope that she’s able to manage her emotions and eating habits as she gets older and more mature and becomes more comfortable in her own skin. The public has always been intolerant and critical of Joyce’s weight. If you’re not anorexic or skin and bones then you’re considered fat. HK has some really warped ideas in regards to the female body image. And I doubt Shirley contacted Joyce out of the goodness of her heart. She exploited a vulnerable child who had lost her mom and had suffered from weight issues all her life, and made money off of her. Joyce should take all the credit for her own weight loss.
@yuaida, what you said was just plain mean. If Joyce is destined to look like her mom, then are you destined to have a sewer mouth. You are a disgrace to humanity.

  4. Haven’t heard about Shirley Cheung for a long time since my last watching her playing supporting role in Game of Deceit.

  5. Oh please! The Media and everyone else need to leave Joyce alone! Hasn’t she suffered enough, losing her beloved mother, grandmother, and godfather all within less than 5 years? Why do people need to add more pressure on her by constantly harping on her about her weight? All she’s doing is trying hard to establish her career and be the responsible woman that she promised her mother she would be, so I don’t understand why people can be so cruel to keep harassing her about something that has been a ‘sore spot’ with her practically her entire life. People need to just leave her alone and let her live her life!

  6. People put too much pressure on Joyce about her weight. Even at her thinnest, people still called her fat. They really need to leave her alone, especially since she’s a really good singer and has talent.

  7. Weight and arrogance are two words which should never be a way to describe Joyce nor any human being. IS she talented? Yes she is. Does she give a crap about losing the title of being a spokesperson? Highly doubt it. Representing a product(s) especially for artistes are never a permanent thing, exaggerated and spreading insulting words to Joyce by the media is just outrageous. Joyce don’t need that from anyone, she’s about one fo the few talented signers there is left in the genre of Cantopop. Judging her and regarding her as someone with weight problems is just disgusting. Beauty is not based on numbers but based on other attributes and unfortunately we live in such a superficial environment where numbers are a way to degrade an individual on physical appearance. When it comes to beauty most of the standards we judge them for is nonsense.

  8. That;s the way with any endorsement deal more so a slimming company’s endorsement deal. Maybe Joyce is fed up with the constant need to have her weight in 2 digits hence she decided to hell with it! As long as she is healthy, to me 180 may be overweight but not too overweight. She just needs to be of healthy weight. As for talent and show biz, her mom was TVB’s most powerful artiste and she was never slim. Unfortunately to be a singer in HK you will need to be stick thin. Look at Mag Lam. Poor girl looks like she will faint anytime. Joyce, change to hosting.

    1. I agree. She has a surprinsingly good voice, really like some of her theme songs for TVB.

  9. never really liked her but really appreciate her honesty. i believe her the slimming products didn’t contribute to her weight loss.

  10. I feel sorry for her. I think she has her mother’s genes. Some people eat all day and never gain weight. Like Angelababy for example, she said she never weight more than 100 lb no matter how much she eats, OMG. To be honest, I like Joyce a lot because she’s close to my age (i’m only 2 years younger) and we both grew up in Vancouver too. I met her once, and she seems down to earth. I’m not sure about her acting though.

  11. i happened to think Joyce Cheng looks really cute and healthy as a chubby girl. I haven’t seen her much in movies, but from what I’ve seen so far, I think she really has potential to become a good actress.
but as a singer, why is that matter if she’s fat or skinny anyway, her good singing voice still there.

  12. People should stop giving her crap about her weight. I don’t like seeing anybody being dehumanized over whether or not they live up to someone’s standard of beauty. Joyce can sing and she’s actually a decent person.

    1. No one really cares that much if she decides to stuff her face with food again. All this article says is that the diet company has probably decided to stop using a celebrity that would not live up to her end of the contract. If she wants to be fat, let her. But its definitely rightly so for a diet company to cut ties with her.

  13. she’s fat, you’re skinny, she’s skinny you are fat. you are 110lb and she is 111lb…you are u, she is she. our difference makes us individuals and beautiful.

  14. Saw her in Super Trio Game Show and they were making fun of her. Seriously she was not even that chubby at that time. She looks great but they still make fun of her weight.

    1. Life in HK must be a nightmare for females who are of normal body mass index. Being bullied and teased for not being stick thin is probably the norm in such a cruel place.

    2. She is often the one who starts cracking jokes about her weight. The other nobodys are too scared to make fun of her until she decides to put herself down first.

  15. Ppl are so mean to her. Compared what she was before, she look much better. She’s still young, she can do whatever she wants. Ppl that promised her mom to take good care of her, what happened to that? She should be in the tvb series again.
