Kris Wu Gets Some Positive Reviews for “L.O.R.D: Legend of Ravaging Dynasties”

China’s first full-length motion-capture film L.O.R.D: Legend of Ravaging Dynasties <爵迹> finally made its way to Chinese cinemas on Friday, September 30. The CGI fantasy film stars a plethora of China’s current hottest actors, including Fan Bingbing (范冰冰), Kris Wu (吴亦凡), Chen Xuedong (陈学冬), and William Chan (陈伟霆).

Directed by Tiny Times <小时代> creator Guo Jingming (郭敬明), L.O.R.D is adapted from Guo’s own best-selling novel, and is set in a fantasy world where four nations—water, wind, fire, and earth—fight in a battle for world domination. The film is China’s first attempt at doing a motion capture CGI movie, a breakthrough for its industry.

But the film, despite getting a standing ovation at its opening night, did not sit well with critics. The CGI was primitive at best, and netizens have joked that it looked more like a cheap online game than a high-budget feature-length film. It’s currently suffering a low 3.8/10 rating on Douban, China’s movie review site.

But there were some positive responses. As reported on Sina, lead star Kris Wu actually earned quite a few praises from viewers who attended the screening. A viewer reportedly said, “Kris Wu’s portrayal of Yin Chen is very close to the original character in the novel. He’s a bit cold, but you can also feel that he has warmth in him.” Many viewers praised Kris’ good looks in the film. Another viewer pointed out that Kris’ eyes are his biggest selling point, saying, “Kris Wu’s eyes can act. [You] can feel that his character contains a lot of sadness in him.”

Kris was no doubt one of the biggest stars to walk the red carpet on opening night. Fans nearly overturned the floor when Kris walked in with his blue military coat and grayish-blonde hairdo.

“It was a challenge,” said Kris, when interviewed about his experience on doing motion-capture. “We had to use our imagination. There is nothing there for you to act with. You have to imagine situations that don’t happen in real life.”

  1. i’d be ashamed to put out something like this. the trailer looks more like an online game than a movie. why can’t they hire skills from hollywood?

    1. @m0m0 it’s better to attempt to do it with local people because that’s how they become independent and not rely on hollywood. that’s also how they learn. they will only get better from now on. this is the best cgi out of china.. ever.

  2. How are they gauging his expressions and acting when they look like digital blobs? I guess this film is akin to Beowulf, except those CGI effects were nearly 10 years old.
