Kristal Tin’s Character in “Black Heart White Soul” Was Difficult to Portray

TVB’s thriller drama, Black Heart White Soul <忠奸人>, was met with satisfying reviews. Female lead, Kristal Tin (田蕊妮), recalled that portraying her role was not easy. Since the character struggled through many internal conflicts, Kristal also found reflected on her own life.

In Black Heart White Soul, Kristal portrays Tam Mei Ching, a woman who gave up on life after being wrongly accused and sent to prison. Upon completion of her sentence, she found support and finally regained strength to start over. Unfortunately, Mei Ching later realizes she was betrayed by the person she trusted most.

Kristal’s character underwent drastic emotional changes, making it challenging to grasp the feelings precisely. Kristal expressed that the drama put much thought into one’s moral conscience, “Lots of things are not explicitly black or white. There is a gray area, where we are positioned most of the time. That’s why knowing how to choose [between black and white] is very important!”

Constantly appearing beside Kristal as her best friend in the drama is May Chan’s (陳嘉佳) character, Lau Miu. Speaking of this role, Kristal explained that the producer added in such a character in order to serve as a contrast. She added, “[Lau Miu] is able to feel secure in a circle where she sells beer and smokes cigarettes. My character hopes to pull her back on track and have her do what she truly thinks is right.”

  1. Very good acting from most of the characters, especially kristal, Louis and roger.

  2. Kristal is good. But somehow she doesnt have star power

    1. The most difficult role to act is Scarlet and she holds it pretty well.

Kristal’s acting is bored! Same old style in BK. She talks and behaves like her bad mouth hubby

  3. Her acting only has 2 styles – loud and louder. I caught her in the first ep, reminded me a lot of her Ah Ying character in Brother’s Keeper. Just feel that her acting’s getting too OTT and stale.

  4. Kristal is too old for the character, she looked way odd in the beginning w/ long hair. May was extremely annoying voice and overacting, hard to watch her.

  5. Episode 27 – a bit OTT acting and I am tired of the series going on and on and on about Matt killing Lau Yim. Lau Yim was cruel, evil, his death shouldn’t be the catalyst.

    1. Sure, but just because he was cruel/evil doesn’t mean Matt was right to kill him. He should’ve been taken to the police. Also I think its a big deal because he’s Kristal’s ex, who warned her that Matt was the reason why she’s in jail.

  6. No doubt she can act, but that doesn’t mean she is suitable for every characters thrown to her. She should be wiser next time in picking the character that suits her or else whatever she’s acclaimed will be futile.

  7. I agree, she looks obviously older than the punk b/f in the beginning. Too old esp that that long hair too. Her character is ok I guess but I don’t really think it’s her best work.
The most stand out character is Louis that ugly looking guy hahaa and Ron is the same as always but I think he actually improved a little bit.

    1. aside from Louis, I think Leanne Li also stands out among the cast. Hopefully she can push herself in for most improved and win it.

    2. Louis isn’t really that ugly lah…just that his acne/pimple scars make him look “chok-less” nia.

      1. The first time i saw Louis i thought he was ugly and punk/ganster-like. I still do. He has no leading man good looks but he sure can act.

  8. I think in this drama Ron is more Evil than Roger. Roger is despicable with others but he truly love crystal and sacrfice alot for her. While Ron is using her wife. He married her to get closer to her dad. Anyway..25 is enough..30 is getting qiong hei..looping story. From this drama I think matt yeung is quite stand out. Even more than Ron.

    1. Of course, Matt has always been cute and he’s still very cute after all these years. Too bad he’s always just a cameo, well nowadays it’s more like supporting but still. I am very impressed w/the song too from those 2 guys who was nerve really famous but glad they get to sing a soundtrack. Voice is much better than always letting the leads sing like RON OR ROGER…AWWW….. hard for the ears. haha LOL…

      1. I’m so glad Hoffman Cheng and Moon Law sang the theme song. Totally agree with you that Ron and/or Roger singing the song would’ve been so “hard on the ears!” LOL.

      2. wow i really thought it was roger and ron singing. it sounds like them!

    2. Totally disagree about Ron being more evil than Roger. Ron does not go around scheming and killing people for money. He also truly loves Gillian, although he does want to arrest her dad (but her dad is actually evil, so how is Ron bad in any way??).

      1. Yeah, I don’t get how Ron can be more evil than Roger either. Roger actually murdered a man, Lau Yim. And he went around arranging for the killings of who and who so that he can get to where he’s at. Truly scary! Ron, on the other hand, truly loves Gillian, and is only, for the time being, using her to put her ruthless dad and the evil Matt/Roger behind bars.

      2. I guess some people will see deceiving someone you love as a bad thing. And it is bad depending on the situation.

  9. Hi, may i know who r the singers of this soundtrack. Thks

    1. @ fumieko

The singers of the theme song/soundtrack are Moon Law and Hoffman Cheng. They’re both TVB actors in very minor roles. Luckily they got their break when they became contestants for “Voice of the Stars”. Hoffman came in third, Moon 5th, I think. I really like Hoffman Cheng’s voice. I think he has a lot of potential if given the opportunity. I wish there is a music video or clip out there of the two of them signing live. I would like to know which guy sings which verse. Anyone out there can help?

      1. Didn’t Hoffman Cheng come in 2nd place?

Theme Song: “Grey Fate/灰色命運”, by Hoffman Cheng and Ronald Law

Sub-Theme Song: “Like the Beginning/如初”, by Louis Cheung

      2. Oh that’s right, Moon is Ronald’s Chinese name.

Hmmmn, I thought with Fred winning the competition, Carina Chamberlain (not sure spelling is correct) came in 2nd, since she was a hot favorite. I remember feeling very happy for him to have been placed in top three.. He doesn’t have the looks, but he certainly has a good voice and should be given opportunities.

      3. @DramaAddict:  Hoffman came in 2nd place, Corinna was 3rd, Yiu Bing was 4th, and Ronald didn’t place, since he got eliminated during the 2nd to last episode (though I guess you could say that he technically came in ‘5th’ since he did make it to top 5 and was the last to get officially eliminated.)

As for the MV with Hoffman and Ronald in it – I don’t think that has come out yet, as I’ve searched for it but was only able to find the official TVB one (the extended one that incorporates the scenes from the series).  Their record company (Voice Entertainment) did release the single already, though that’s audio only, not the video.

If you’re curious to know who sings which part, that’s easy to find out, since the lyrics have been available for quite some time already and it’s actually broken down who sings which part by verse (for example, the first verse and second verses — Ronald sings the first 2 lines, Hoffman sings the next 2, then they both sing together….then for the third verse, it’s switched around with Hoffman singing first, then Ronald, then together….it goes back and forth like that throughout the song). Hope that helps….

      4. @MW @llwy12
Yes you’re right, Hoffman did come in 2nd! I just read an old article from this site, which even provided the number of votes each finalist had!

        @llwy12
Thanks for letting me know how I can find out who sings which verse. As always, you are very helpful and thorough in your explanations. 🙂

      5. Hoffman Cheng has a very “powerful” voice and great showmanship. He makes it seem effortless. He would do well in theatre/musicals as well.

  10. Normally, the challenging role to portray will gain more attention, that’s why Roger & Louis Cheung steal the show, no surprise. Not bad for Ron Ng here, he has improved.

    1. Ron acting was bland up till episode 27. Now he is shown as the smart cop, bringing more life to his character, Funny. He’s alright in ep 27. Can’t judge whether he will break out of his wooden mode until the series is finished.

  11. She was relegated to supporting after marrying Roger. Ron’s Funny isn’t stupid after all, lol

    1. Yes, after marrying Roger, Kristal was just the housewife and nothing more it seemed. I like her acting, very natural compared to other fadans. But this is not that big of a role where she should be getting TV Queen award. There’s a few more episodes left and we’ll see.

Also very glad Funny smartened up! I was beginning to feel bad for Ron who has been given enough of these cop roles which never stood out because of his wooden delivery.

  12. well…i know that Kristal tired very hard to do well in this film but she had done a very good job not bad after all!!!!!!!!! 🙂 ~~~i support Kristal Tin~~~

  13. Kristal has a blaring, flat voice which can get annoying after a while. Can control the blaring but the flatness, difficult, as that is her natural voice.

  14. I think Krystal’s acting is superb, but the role seemed like it was written for someone younger. Actually felt like it was something TVB typically cast Kate Tsui or Linda Chung for since the last 10 episode were basically looks of betrayal.

  15. I really like her character but she looked a lot prettier with long hair…

May Chan’s voice is a bit annoying though.
