Lawrence Ng Gambles Away Sorrows in Macau

Lawrence Ng (吳啟華) openly admitted that he came from a family of gamblers. Influenced by his late grandmother, who died of a heart attack in the middle of a gambling session, both Lawrence and his brother Ng Kai Ming (吳啟明) have been gambling since they were children.

After divorcing his second wife of seven years Shi Yangzi (石洋子) last year, 50-year-old Lawrence is at a new low point in his life. With two failed marriages and separated from his daughter, Lawrence has been gambling his sorrows away in Macau, allegedly becoming a worse gambling addict than before.

Earlier, the paparazzi spotted Lawrence leaving his home in Kowloon Tong to the Shun Tak Heliport, where he took a ferry to Macau. After arriving, Lawrence met up with Michael Miu (苗僑偉), Jaime Chik (戚美珍), and two other female friends for lunch. While Jaime rested at her hotel room, Lawrence took Michael to a casino in Wynn Macau. The pair first stopped by a craps table, and then moved on to the baccarat table.

Though recognized by many patrons, Lawrence appeared unfazed and continued to gamble freely. Michael began to show signs of boredom quickly, and left the casino approximately an hour later. Lawrence then moved on to another casino at MGM Macau and started playing baccarat again.  Originally on a winning streak, Lawrence began to lose after raising his bet and lost a large number of thousand-dollar chips. Frustrated and upset, Lawrence tossed his cards onto the table.

Lawrence reportedly returned to Hong Kong the next day and immediately booked a room to play mahjong at a restaurant. He did not leave the restaurant until after midnight.

A source close to Lawrence said that he had cut down on his gambling since the birth of his daughter six years ago. However, after his divorce with Shi Yangzi last year, his gambling habit returned and he began to visit Macau more frequently. Lawrence usually visit the casinos by himself and placed big bets.

Lawrence Denies Gambling Addiction

In a later interview, Lawrence dismissed the rumors, clarifying that gambling is only for entertainment. He said, “When I go to the United States, I would sometimes visit the casinos in Las Vegas. I usually place around $30,000 HKD per bet. Winning or losing isn’t a big deal, as I don’t play really big.”

When he was younger, Lawrence confessed he once lost his entire fortune while gambling in Macau and did not have enough money to buy a ticket ferry back to Hong Kong. “I vowed to never gamble my assets away. Now, I’m only gambling for entertainment purposes.” Lawrence said he is not afraid that his gambling would affect his image. “It is my choice and I have to stand up to it. I’m thankful for having that experience when I was younger. I’ve learned.”

  1. i think it’s really brave and really cool of him to own up to his faults and be frank about his hobbies and family past. not many celebrities these days are willing to face the possibilities of a bad image by telling the truth, but he doesn’t care. and i think that’s a very good trait to have. and i had no idea 吳啟明 was his brother! i see the resemblance now. i think his brother was much better looking than lawrence when they’re younger but not so sure now. not much news about his bro since he left tvb. anyways, best of luck to lawrence and hopefully his bad habits won’t relapse.

    1. Agreed! I like how genuine he is. But he’s also had his share of bad images already so he probably has nothing to lose anymore.

  2. Gambling is a guarantee loosing game. The odds are against u mathematically. Asians mostly think they will get lucky in the short run but it doenst work like that. If u win, guarantee u will go back and eventually loose it all back. Y do u think casinos are opening more and more w mostly targeting on asians. Because they are too superstitious. In California casinos, they don’t allow dice.craps or roulette to protect the whites from their fave game. But all asians games are fine cuz screw the asians. Just like our ancestors built the railroad n get paid 1% n sold piggy style n white get 100%. Asians should unite n stop buying luxury brands. Don’t support them n make them rich while they call us piggy, like Tommy hilfiger n etc.

  3. The dude look like one of those mellow quiet kind of guy, he have us fool, he is a con artist, a gambler always will be a gamble.

  4. I really feel bad for Lawrence. I hope his friends help him get over it soon. Even if he loses custody of his daughter. he will still get visitation rights. So I hope he stays strong for the sake of his daughter

A casino is one of the worst places to be when in a bad mood. You can make the worst decision of your life (e.g. sleeping with a stranger, borrowing from loansharks, get mugged, lose your fortune, etc…) there without realising and then your whole life takes a turn for the worse.

I recommend karaoke in a private room where you can sing, laugh and cry to your hearts content as you release your emotions for hours and hours. Then you get so tired afterwards and just sleep for hours when you get home. It is much safer, healthier and cheaper than gambling.

  5. I do hope sincerely that Lawrence will give up this habit of gambling now otherwise he will only get deeper into the mire and won’t be able to get out!Very few people are disciplined enough to know their limits, to know when to stop and I hope Lawrence is one of them before it’s too late.

  6. Lawrence.. There will certainly be good things coming up for you. Don’t get engross in gambling as if you treat as an entertainment and you know your limits then it is acceptable. Otherwise you may regret later.. We believe in you don’t give up in your life…

  7. Men often resort to these 2 vices to cope – gambling, and alcohol. In addiction to smoking, which is more taken for granted.

None of which are going to improve their current situation or woes, but spiral them down further.

吳啟明 = now I know who kdrama Healer’s Jo Chang-wook reminds me of!

All the best to him, in his moving on process. It would be great to channel all the negative energy into something positive like exercise.

  9. $30,000 HKD per bet or total for the night?!? are you serious that’s like 4K USD that is a huge bet if he just use it to gamble on a single hand game/bet.

    1. Agree. When I read $30,000 HKD per bet, I was thinking, man, thats a lot of money! He may be rich and that kind of money don’t mean much to him but you can easily lose it all so quick. 30,000 can easily become 40, 50, 60, etc. And if he’s gambling at the rate that is being reported then he could be in serious trouble. Anyway, I hope he knows what he’s doing.

    2. HK$30,000 per bet is not even in high-roller territory. That’s about US$3,800. Some Chinese/HK gamblers bet US$250,000 or almost HK$2,000,000 per bet. Crazy people.

    3. I’m surprised he bet this big. I met him at Reno Nevada about ten years ago and he was betting $5 and $10 on Craps. I guessed he was just enjoying himself at the time. I truly hope he can hold gambling in check. He seemed like a really good character person.
