Leanne Liu’s Husband Committed Suicide

Popular 1980s actress, Leanne Liu (劉雪華),was known for her performances in The Young Empress Dowager Cixi <少女慈禧> and numerous Taiwanese television dramas adapted from Qing Yao’s novels.  Leanne’s husband, famed screenwriter, Deng Yukun (鄧育昆), committed suicide at 4 AM yesterday.

Mr. Deng jumped off a high-rise apartment, Wellington Garden, in Shanghai to his death. Leanne rushed downstairs to the scene and alerted the police of her husband’s suicide. After examining the corpse, the police ruled out possibility of homicide.

Leanne and Mr. Deng, who was born in Taiwan, got married in 1999. Allegedly, Mr. Deng fell in love with Leanne upon first sight. He initially asked her out due to reasons concerning the television series. The couple took residence in Shanghai in their 12-year marriage and dually focused their careers in China. Aside from serving as screenwriter, Mr. Deng also produced numerous television series. Allegedly, 64-year-old Mr. Deng had bipolar disorder prior to his suicide. As to whether Mr. Deng’s suicide was linked to his illness, further investigation was required.

In the past, Leanne noted that her inability to bear children with Mr. Deng was a penance from Heaven. While Mr. Deng was alive, he complained that Leanne spent too much time filming series. Mr. Deng’s children from his previous marriage will arrive in Shanghai to handle his funeral arrangements.

Jayne: Leanne Liu was one of my favorite ATV actresses in the 1980s. She portrayed many strong, intelligent characters and often overshadowed her male co-stars. I enjoyed her performance as the young Empress Dowager Cixi. My favorite Leanne role was in Bird of Paradise opposite Savio Tsang.

My condolences regarding Mr. Deng’s death. Hopefully Leanne is surrounded by the support of loved ones right now…

  1. =O

Isn’t Leanne known for her amazing crying skills

RIP Mr. Deng and hope Leanne is fine too

  2. Is this her 2nd marriage? I liked her but I hated most of the Taiwanese series she was in. She’s the crying queen in those old Taiwanese series.

    1. It is her first and only marriage. In the past when she young she dated Liu Dekai (刘德凯), they did break up and it seem like it have a big impact on her since she remains single for a very long time until she met her husband.
So sorry to hear the news, condolences to her and the family.

      1. And I thought she got married to Lui Dekai. I read something about they both loved each other very much but their personality clashed so they split.

  3. Leanne Liu crying scenes were simply amazingly and beautifully done. Her eyes were so expressive: they could be fierce and blazing with rage, or tender with love, or pensive with melancholy, or twinkling with laughter, all done superbly. Plus she was so beautiful when young especially as the heroine in Chiung Yao’s tv series.

Anyway, my condolences to her and her family. And Deng, RIP.

    1. Clamine,
Agree with your compliments on Leanne Li’s acting. I already liked her in her ATV days before she started acting in Taiwan. I found the old Taiwanese adaptations of Qing Yao’s novels to be too over-the-top and sentimental, so much crying in every episode. Even the men cry so much in these series….

Leanne was a beautiful bride in her wedding to Mr. Deng.

      1. I’ve watched Leanne young Cixi but none of her other ATV series. Only recently did I watch two of her Chiung Yao tv series – 幾度夕陽紅 and 煙雨濛濛. IMO,Vicki Zhao’s portrayal in remake Romance in the Rain could not hold a candle to Leanne’s in 煙雨濛濛.

Other the above two and the Princess Pearl trilogy, I’ve not watched other Chiung Yao tv series but since I like Leanne I might watch her 庭院深深. Other than her, I was not impressed by the cast members. But yeah, too much crying and maudlin scenes for me too but good thing is I can ff those scenes.

  4. RIP and condolence.

It’s sad that he choose to commit suicide. What a haunting problem suicide is. The people left behind are always the most hurt.

  5. Oh my goodness! How tragic! Oh, my condolences to their family. I wonder what events had transpired in the past for Leanne to attribute her childlessness as a penance from heaven?

  6. I watched 少女慈禧 when I was little kid. I didn’t even realize it was ATV until now. To think about it, it makes a whole lot of sense cuz I was so bored of the dragging scenes.

Wasn’t Donnie Yen in the series? He’s the other love interest right? I think the king is actually an actor currently in TVB right now.

    1. I didn’t mean Donnie Yen, I meant the guy that has pitch problem when he talks. Ng Wai Kwok. Lol

    2. Pandamao,
I watched the Young Empress Dowager Cixi as a little girl as well. I remember very little of it, only the nice theme song and Leanne Li playing her role convincingly.

I forgot what role Ng Wai Kok played.

      1. I think that I saw that series when I was little too so I don’t remember much of it.I remembered that Leanne got married years ago but I forgot to who. I just remembered that she dated Liu De Kai back in the days.

So sad to hear that her husband committed suicide. What a tragedy… May he rest in peace and hopefully, Leanne has the support of her family, friends and fans.

  7. I remembered that Leanne was famous for those Qiong yao series. She is a great actress, however, I don’t like those Qiong Yao series since they are soooo depressing. I also wasn’t into to modern series at all…I heard that Qiong Yao said that Leanne portrayed her characters to perfection…

  8. Sad. At the end Leanne is still not lucky in love.

    1. I know and sadly some have love and career, while some have career and not love. Then there are others who are lucky to have both…

  9. She can cry the most beautiful of them all though I can’t stand most of the Taiwanese series she filmed.

But why? Why did he killed himself? What illness?

    1. Funn,
The article mentioned that Mr. Deng had bipolar depression…perhaps this drove him to suicide.

      1. If he did have bipolar depression, then I can sort of understand why he committed suicide. That condition is pretty serious if I remember correctly.

  10. Sad to read about this. Suicide is always tragic, and traumatic for those left behind. Leanne Li was an amazing actress, although I was too young to remember much from her dramas. My mother and aunts loved her acting in the Young Empress Dowager and I remember her also in Qiang Yao’s dramas. She was excellent in the lead role of Yi Ping (the role that Vicki Zhao took over in the later remake).

  11. “In the past, Leanne noted that her inability to bear children with Mr. Deng was a penance from Heaven. “

Why did Leanne say like this? What wrong has she done?

    1. Because of she had an abortion. The baby was rumored to be Liu De kai’s (刘德凯)

      1. Clamine,
“Because of she had an abortion. The baby was rumored to be Liu De kai’s (刘德凯)”

This is new info to me…when did Leanne become pregnant? She actually admitted to an abortion?

      2. @Jayne, since I got interested in her, I looked up her news and that was what I read online. I can’t remember if she admitted to abortion or not, but the rumor of her pregnancy and latter abortion was widely reported. And also Leanne in person was supposedly very different from her on screen heroine image. In real life, she was quite crude who cussed often and a chain smoker. Her unruly behavior caused quite a bit headache to Chiung Yao, or so I read.

      3. Thanks for the news Clamine! I am so sad to hear that she had an abortion if it is true. I wonder why she did?? If she dated and loved/liked Liu De Kai and possibly had a baby with him, then I wonder why they did not get married? Even if he refused marriage, she should have kept the baby and raised it herself.

I read news about her back then but have never heard of her having bad behavior before. I actually heard more good things about her like how she helped Fan Bing Bing get a role in HZGG and how that helped Fan Bing Bing have the fame that she has today.

  12. It’s always sad when someone decide to end their life. This is also a little strange since he had a wife and was not alone. I guess sometimes death is the solution to everything…

  13. This is horrible. Hope she will be surrounded by her love ones to see her throught. It’s one thing when it’s natural death, but suicide, the one left alive will be the most pained.

    1. I just heard that his death was not a suicide but an accident….

  14. most important must has love in both of them, if didnt want be happen this tragedi.

  15. To me she was cute in those old days . Gone by. Pixie in looks. I saw her portrayal of the young Cixi…
She still looks good now. I can only understand the Cantonese version.
