Linda Chung Wants to Be “Property Queen”

Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣) is known to be very frugal and leads a simple lifestyle. She is often seen catching a ride with fellow co-workers or taking the bus by herself. Prudent with her money, Linda chooses to put savings towards investment properties instead of personal luxuries.

As one of TVB’s most promoted artistes, Linda often has a non-stop filming schedule. Her music albums sold well and her healthy image makes her popular among advertisers. She recently pocketed over $1 million HKD in endorsement fees.

Despite her wealth, Linda confessed that most of her clothes, bags, and jewelry were actually sponsored by different companies, allowing her to save significantly on clothing expenses. She would feel guilty whenever she bought an expensive purse.

Linda prefers to invest in real estate instead. Since she has saved up over the years, Linda was able to pay large down payments, resulting in small mortgages on the four properties she purchased. Linda disclosed, “The two properties in Hong Kong are under my name. I have two more houses in Canada – one is under joint ownership with my father, while the other is co-owned with my mother. I want to buy more properties for my parents later. I’ve thought about buying properties elsewhere – like Singapore. I don’t have a lot of investment knowledge, but my manager helps me accept a lot of jobs.”

According to a source, Linda first purchased her Hong Kong apartment in 2006, merely after two years after working in TVB. Since Linda only started her career, she got a mortgage on the $1.96 million HKD apartment. As Linda’s popularity and income rose, she dropped $5.5 million HKD in full for her complex in Metro City Plaza. In the last year, it was speculated that Linda also bought a 5000-square-feet luxury home in Canada estimated at $15 million HKD.

  1. I guess it is easy to make money in Hong Kong if you are a popular artiste. No wonder everyone (especially girls) wants to be an artiste in Hong Kong.

    1. Lolol, well if you’re a popular artist anywhere, I’m sure you’d gain a reasonable Income anyway despite location. But Hong Kong is extremely competitive , and if it was really that easy to earn money as a popular artist in Hong Kong, then there wouldn’t be so many of them heading towards China to earn fast money in my opinion.

And I disagree with all girls wanting to be artists in Hong Kong because of the money they will make. It’s the fast fame they can have if they get promoted.

      1. I want to be an artiste in Hong Kong but not for the money. I want to be an artiste in Hong Kong because it always have Been my dream which linda chung inspired me

      2. I don’t quite agree. I am sure 80% of the girls, who became artistes in Hong Kong, were going for good money. How can an average person in Hong Kong make so much money unless you win a lottery ticket?

  2. Don’t need to know how to act or sing to be a Hong Kong artist… As long as you act cute and innocent.

    1. And you benefit more if you were born in the west, and speak little Chinese

      1. Hi Heidi,
I’ve the same thought as you. I know she’s known to be a nice person. But somehow I’m bored with her. Perhaps I like someone who is more versatile and not the innocent or girl next door look. She’s definitely a lucky girl, happened to be at the right place and time. There aren’t not many talented artistes in HK and since a lot of them are going elsewhere it gives a lot of opportunities to those who stay on.

      2. Bloom:that’s how I feel about her too. Luck definitely played a big part in her success… her acting, singing and her looks are just average.

  3. You don’t have to be an artist to to buy property. As long as you have a realistic goal and stick to it like her. Just get a good job, no frivilous spending and you will get there assuming that you that you can buy property you like in your price range. Definitely hard these days in better know cities like HK, Toronto, Vancouver, SF Bay Area, NYC.

    1. aptos,
Perhaps when Linda purchased her first property in HK about eight years ago, the prices were more affordable. It also depends on the location where she purchased it.

However, rich mainlanders have rushed in to purchase properties in HK and regular residents find it difficult to own real estate due to the high prices now.

Linda’s current yearly income is equivalent to or possibly surpass a doctor or lawyer’s income, so it is not surprising that she owns multiple properties.

  4. Anyone can buy property assuming you have a decent steady job with career advancement. Defintely, no frivilous spending on needless materialistic items. You don’t need to be in entertainment to do that. High tech or certain self employed jobs can get you there.

    1. Not quite true. I have a real estate friend in Hong Kong. She told me just a couple of months ago that even new couples, who are both new graduates in medicine, cannot afford to buy a flat in Hong Kong nowadays. As we know, doctors make very good money in Hong Kong as their fees include consultations and prescriptions.

      1. S,
Since the acquaintances you mention are recent graduates, they may still need time to pay back their loans and establish themselves firmly in their practices. With time, they should be able to afford to purchase their own property.

      2. Agree. However, a flat of 800 sq. ft. in just an okay area would cost HKD800,000 at least. It is not that easy to buy a flat in Hong Kong. The average income of a white-collar person in Hong Kong makes only HKD15,000 to 30,000 per month while a professional makes HKD20,000 40,000+ per month. It will take a long time to save up the down-payment.

An artiste, a fairly popular one, can easily earn HK$20,000+ per episode (filming time could be a few days only), plus she can make lots of money by filming ads and endorsements.

  5. What happened to Linda’s face? Why is she looking like a chipmunk?

  6. linda chung is like shirley yeung…both are indeed started earlier in properties investments and now enjoy the fruits of high property appreciation!!!! both are consider as frugal actress and yet still know that properties are the best investment not just in HK but all over the world

  7. We must all learn from linda chung investment style to be frugal and not overspend…. no wonder when she just started her carer with tvb she already quickly bought a property then though she still newbie….at least now she enjoying her fruits of rewards due to her smart investing idea earlier

    1. We should admire her frugality and simple lifestyle but I can’t say the same for her as an actress. Her acting is so one- dimensional such that whatever role she takes on, it’s always the same facial and tonal expressions. You could just pluck her out from one series and insert her into another and you can’t tell the difference. She tried to show off some diversity in Tiger Cubs 2 but ending over-acting and looked so fake. She just could not pull it off. A pleasant and good- natured girl perhaps but definitely not an accomplished actress.

  8. Linda tries too hard to be something she isn’t in real life which causes her acting to not be believable. Her passion to improve seems lacking these days too.
