Mandy Wong Does Not Believe in Love at First Sight

Mandy Wong Does Not Believe in Love at First Sight thumbnail

After joining the entertainment industry for five years, Mandy Wong (黃智雯) has been heavily promoted by TVB. She has appeared in many popular dramas, such as Lives of Omission <潛行狙擊>,  L’Escargot <缺宅男女>, The Hippocratic Crush <On Call 36小时> and Tiger Cubs <飛虎>. Facing increased workload, Mandy has no time to get into a relationship. Revealing that she also thought about her romantic life sometimes, Mandy did not believe in love at first sight. It is more important for Mandy that a couple started as friends first.

Mandy is Comfortable Making Friends With Men

Having an outgoing personality, Mandy has few scandals with her costars. She has only been romantically rumored with Him Law (羅仲謙) and Benjamin Yuen (袁偉豪) after collaborating with them a few times. Feeling contented that she has little scandalous news, Mandy is able to focus on her work better, and does not have to worry about being tailed by the paparazzi.

Although having a straightforward character, Mandy only shares her emotions after she gets to know a person better. Revealing that she is comfortable in making friends with men, Mandy said, “A Sagittarius makes friends easily be it a man or woman. I enjoy making friends with men. They may find it comfortable to chat with me. When time passes by, we will lose the chemical sparks between a man and woman, and we will become more like buddies.”

Mandy Does Not Believe in Love at First Sight

Having an easygoing disposition, Mandy has been advised by her friends not to disclose her secrets too easily. She has also increased her alert level and is careful in sharing everything about herself to others.

Still wanting for her “Mr. Right,” Mandy does not have a set of criteria for her future boyfriend. She believes in getting to know the person first. If the man happens to be outside the entertainment circle, Mandy does not think that it will be difficult to manage the relationship.

“A couple does not need to start out dating first. We can begin as friends. When he gradually understands about the nature of my work, he can consider a long-term relationship. This is better than those instant sparks or love at first sight!”

I love this girl. I don’t believe in Love at first sight either. At most, it’s lust at first sight. Love is about accepting the person for who he is, flaws and all. Love is unconditional. How do you know if your love is unconditional if you haven’t gone through any obstacles together yet?

    2. sandcherry says:

Mandy Wong seems to know how to act. Good prospects. Hope she will move up to act 1st lead roles soon. Good luck, Mandy!

It is good that you don’t have any scandals to affect your work and image.

    3. Olivia says:

I love Mandy, and I’m so glad TVB is giving her all these opportunuties. Hopefully she will be nominated and win the Most Improved.

I never heard about the rumors with her and Benjamin Yuen (any articles on that?) She did have great chemistry with him though in On Call and hope they will continue on with the sequel. I wonder if they will have any scenes together in A Good Heart Goest Haywire.

Hope Mandy finds her true love soon.

      • tvbfan says:

Mandy looks most compatible with Him Law. Too bad Tavia take Him Law first.

        • Addy says:

I know :( I honestly can’t see Him Law with anybody else BUT Mandy lol. They are so cute when they are together T_T

        • Olivia says:

I agree. Mandy and Him do look more compatible than Him and Tavia.

I’m loving Divas in Distress so far. Their chemistry is undenieable. I love the bickering between the two and such a complete change from their characters in Suspects in Love. Refreshing.

        • Veejay says:

In age term, Him law does indeed look compartible with Mandy but I think Him prefers someone more feminine.

        • fiona says:

agree. mandy and him looks dozes times better than him and tavia. tavia is too old!

        • Fox says:

@Veejay: Are you sure that Him Him want someone more feminine? Theressa Fu is feminine but current girl of Him Him is not. So maybe his taste is very varied and can change rapidly.

    4. salamander says:

Mandy Wong can act better than the five high ranked TVB fadans Tavia, Myolie, Linda, Kate, Fala.

      • sandcherry says:

Agree because none of the top 5 fadans acts well.

        • Koop says:

How can mandy act better than five of these fa dans?! she have so much things to learn from them. Don’t u know how to judge acting?!

      • tvbfan says:

Agree because it’s boring seeing the 5 fadans in every other series with the same predictable acting.

      • AC says:

        lol, maybe 2 of them
but when she gets pushed to lead actress, she will get the same complaints as them and that X and Y are much better than she is. It goes with the territory of being popular.

    5. Funn Lim says:

If her nose is longer, she really looks like Tavia’s sister in the above picture.

I believe in love at first sight if it means passionate love. Lovers who were friends first are ok until they break up and they’re no longer friends, Imagine the secrets one can tell others then! Nahhhh… keep your friends as friends and choose your lover from the other pool of people.

      • tvbfan says:

She has natural nose. Tavia’s nose is injected with hydrogenic acid.

      • shu says:

tavia is a pretty and attractive women, mandy have a typical local H.K.chinese look and a “si lai” aura but she is a good actress

        • missy says:

Mandy is good looking n fresh while Tavia is preety n have a cute eye ladies. They indeed have some similarity in look if Tavia able look meatier.

      • TVBFanatic says:

“If her nose is longer, she really looks like Tavia’s sister in the above picture.”

Well.. if Mandy calls tavia and asks for her doctor’s name, Mandy too can have Tavia’s nose.

        • exoidus says:

Nah, not going to happen but maybe TY is trying to persuade other actresses to get her “shark” nose so the public won’t notice it, LOL

    6. Kobe says:

      She looks better than Tavia

    7. Nicole says:

Mandy has quite a range compared to the leading fadans, if you look at her roles, she can act everything from tomboy, shy and withdrawn, dumb and innocent, rebellious, to sei bat po.
None of the 5 fadans can do so.

      • Addy says:

I agree with you somewhat. The 5 fadans can be pretty good depending on what role they’re playing, but Mandy, however, is pretty convincing in a variety of roles.

I also think Mandy is more naturally gifted when it comes to acting. When the 5 fadans first debuted, they were pretty awful to watch, but Mandy was pretty decent when she first came out. In fact, when I first saw Mandy in “A Chip Off the Last Block” and “Suspects in Love,” I thought she was some film/theater actress that I didn’t know about who decided to film for TVB.

        • Nicole says:

Agreed, I do think the fadans all excel in some roles that are suited for them. But I mean Myolie, Tavia and Kate will get stuck at the shy and innocent roles, and Linda sei bat po? Nah..
I don’t even want to talk about fala, who was good and charming when she debuted, but now appears to be sleepwalking through most of her series. Maybe it was because of her facial paralysis.

Since Mandy graduated from Hong Kong School of Performing Arts, I wonder what she majored in? Was it theater?

        • sandcherry says:

“Musical, theatre, and dancing” ……. she mentioned it in her personal interview at a local Chinese TV channel. She loved musical and dancing, and performing in a musical is her ultimate goal.

      • a-pop says:

well, mostly of the the above at least Tavia able and already done that type of role during her younger day such as shy and withdraw in Eternal Happiness and Find the Light ,dunb and innocent in DB ,tomboyish and rebellious in Vigilante Force and W Files . Same thing with Myolie in the past. Now the fadans already pass the age to do carry out the role

        • Nicole says:

They might have attempted, but their acting weren’t as good as hers.

        • exoidus says:

The so-called top fadans aren’t that much older than Mandy and Linda is actually younger.

It’s only reasonable that Mandy’s acting is better than a young TY and the fact that she studied acting before joining TVB.

No wonder TVB can’t produce a series abt the 5 ancient beauties of China, when only Fala is believable, LOL.

        • a-pop says:

wow.. I taught she look around 25 to 27. She still look nice young in her age. Maybe she haven’t drain by TVB therefore she look refreshing and nice.

      • tvbfan says:

I agree. Mandy has tried and excel in many different roles. I don’t see any of the 5 fadans have this versatility.

        • sandcherry says:

Right. It is a good way to polish and improve her acting skills so that she can handle different types of characters in different drama series.

      • exoidus says:

Nah Linda can do it she played a tomboy in a Watchdog’s tale, rebellious/sei bat po in AJCL and shy/withdrawn/dumb/innocent in a common denominator in most of her other series, LOL.

        • tvbfan says:

Her tomboy is A Watchdog’s tale is lame and she obviously wore a wig. In AJCL she exaggerated as the sei bat po and in second half she turn back into innocent Linda mode where her acting get better.

        • tvbfan says:

Mandy’s tomboy acting in Diva in Distress is very natural and her style is just right from top to toe.

        • exoidus says:

Im not watching Diva so I can’t comment, but she was very believable as “sei bat po” in L’escargot.

Linda can play innocent/sweet better, Fala just being prettier, Kate can seduce better and Myolie/TY can’t think of anything superior to Mandy.

        • a-pop says:

Myolie maybe can act comedy and silly character better than Mandy while Tavia can act rebellious character( during younger her younger past) and maybe crying scene better than Mandy. Haven’t see Mandy having any ancient character. If she able to pull out the ancient character , she will be consider great actress in many aspect.

        • Nicole says:

AJCL linda was more rebellious. Not Sei Bat Po, in that see lai style. That’s why Mandy is impressive. She is equally convincing both innocent and being a sei bat po.
None of the others are convincing in a variety.
          Myolie – Comedy, professional
          Tavia – Drama, professional
          Linda – Sweet good girl
Fala – Uhm pretty girl? She was good as carmen though, so maybe rebellious roles.
Kate – Seductive, rebellious roles. Don’t do the innocent ones pulease, she starts speaking in “that” voice. LOL

        • sandcherry says:

Agree ….. regarding the acting abilities of the top 5 fadans …… not versatile enough to handle different types of characters.. Myolie Wu is totally not fit to act some queen or fei characters in Ching Dynasty drama series.

        • Christy says:

Personally, no matter what show Mandy is in, she does it really well. but that goes back to the fact she has had training…. professionally.

        • skinnymocha says:

I think Kate has the seductive looks, but she should play against type. Her “seductive” acting leaves little to be desired. I especially wanted to tear my hair out whilst watching her in Relic of an Emissary. Anyway, I prefer her in comedy (albeit a little OTT there) or more mellow roles (such as Speech of Silence).

As for Linda, I know she tries, but her efforts in playing tomboys or the rebellious types are poor. Her character in AJCL certainly had a bit of a personality transplant…

        • Canto says:

I don’t mind Mandy or Nancy rising up to take a larger share of the pie so that we viewers have more variety/ choice. For that matter, I don’t mind if some of the new faces e.g. Christine, Crystal or Miss HK candidates gets promoted too. Good to see more faces, prevents from getting bored!

But I would also support the so called top 5 fadans. I think they are all beautiful and talented in their own right. They look different and have each their abilities, strengths and weaknesses.

I have been watching lots of k dramas recently and I do appreciate that the TVB fadans are still different and beautiful without looking all the same or perfection-boring!

        • Tart says:

          Agree with Canto.
It time to promote Natalie, Mandy , Elaine , Selina Li and Nancy and few more second line actresses to first line actresses. and recruit more newbies (that not bad in acting) to second line . Love to see more faces.

        • Funn Lim says:

Natalie – No. She was mostly annoying in King Maker and her acting is the problem

Mandy – she has a face that will be typecast. So far she can’t lead

Elaine – improved tremendously but still sucks in an amateurish sort of way. See King Maker.

Selina Li – No. Fluffy. Too fluffy.

Nancy – Can act but sorry, she can’t lead not can be be one of the leading, yet. She will have to wait for her breakout role which will depend on luck, good script and good timing.

        • Kidd says:

I watch episode 1 of Diva on the weekend. Mandy was convincing as a tomboy.

        • Funn Lim says:

Doesn’t need hard to be convincing because with short hair she does look like a tomboy. What needs convincing is ancient beauty.

        • Nicole says:

Up to now, Mandy has not acted in an ancient series. But I believe she should be pretty good at ancient series.

      • Jen says:

She looked really attractive in “A chip of the old block too”. She’s not afraid to go all out in her acting and take on different or unattractive roles such as tomboy roles or si lai roles.

      • AC says:

I think Mandy is just lucky that she’s not typecasted yet.

    8. vivien says:

Mandy remind me of TY in her early career. TY had no scandal, fresh face and promising acting back then until TY lost all that once she got promoted. I hope Mandy can stay successful as an actress LOL

      • Nicole says:

        Dont compare mandy to tavia.
Tavia basically had no charisma or screen presence, I watched her in many series when she first debuted, and can’t remember her or her name in any until Vigilante in the Mask. and Mandy has tons of charisma. People notice her since her first few roles.

        • a-pop says:

erm …. people only start noticing Mandy on A Chip Off the Old Block . But before tat Mandy also get many role Best Selling Secrets,Moonlight Resonance
When Easterly Showers Fall on the Sunny West ,Off Pedder,E.U.The King of Snooker
Just Love II Iris Ng Hoi-tung
In the Chamber of Bliss . So if u said people start notice her first few roles then not was not correct

        • Yian says:

I was too young to remember how TY was in her early days. But for Mandy, I think it was easier for her to get noticed when she debuted as people can spread things around the internet so quickly nowadays.

        • larry 3 says:

I remember Tavia when she was on FM701 and her nose was at normal size!

      • larry 3 says:

I think Mandy is Linda Chung back in the day except with different personalities. Right now, there is way too much Mandy in TVB 2012 series. Just like Linda back when they promote her. Yes, way too much…can Mandy take a long break?

      • Linnh says:

Lol you never know what TVB can do, Maybe Mandy also will lose her scandal free image, when TVB is ready to promote her, and put many many rumours up in her head like they do to Christine just for promotion :P

    9. nemesis says:

      I loved Mandy in ACOTOB.

    10. Yian says:

      I like Mandy :)

I always though it was so hard to get in and maintain a relationship if you’re in the entertainment circle, but we’ve seen quite a lot of marriages recently. Hope it’s Mandy’s term some time :D

    11. hmmmm says:

mandy wong is tavias long lost sister in that pic!

    12. sandcherry says:

I think Mandy Wong looks like Nnandia Chan 陳松伶 (though not very much in this photo, but in many other photos).

    13. Christy says:

If you guys haven’t forgotten, Mandy ACTUALLY graduated from an ACTING college/university, not some crappy TVB acting class. So it’s not surprising that she can act.

      • Funn Lim says:

Just because she graduated from some acting school does not give her better credentials. She has an edge over others but not more than that.

    14. Icetea_td says:

But she’s not that beautiful and she doesn’t have good body figure compared to the five fadans either. That’s why it’s difficult for her to get to the main lead.

      • Nicole says:

Uh? Most of the other fadans now and present weren’t really beautiful, some are even below average like Flora Chan, yet they can get to main lead, and most don’t have good body figure either.
Mandy is still relatively new, I believe she will get to first lead soon.

    15. Christina says:

Her and Him have much better chemistry than if Him and Tavia played a couple , and I agree she does act better than some fadans , and I hope they will continue to promote her , although I think she does look prettier with longer hair , but her short hair was perfect for Divas in Distress

    16. skinnymocha says:

I really like Mandy, but I’m not sure if we can call her fadan material yet. It’s just that the top 5 right now are really bad… I hope she won’t turn out like Myolie/Tavia; good in supporting roles, but mediocre/bad as the lead.

      • Funn Lim says:

        Who’s the top 5 fadan?

        • skinnymocha says:

Simply because they’re usually leading (apart from Niki, who’s hardly around):
          1. Myolie / Tavia
          3. Fala
          4. Linda
          5. Kate
I’ll want to scrape my eyes out if Aimee ever joins this list.

In the case of Mandy (and Nancy Wu) I think their acting speaks for themselves and they do deserve more screen time than the top 5. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean they should lead, but perhaps the others should be demoted instead… Then again, who else can step it up and fill that void…?

        • skinnymocha says:

But actually, if Mandy does well in her next few series, I wouldn’t mind seeing her leading. Nancy has shown herself to be rather versatile, but unfortunately, I get this sort of vixen vibe whenever I look at her. Not that it stops Kate though… Acting skills aside, does anyone think Nancy have the “face” of a heroine?

        • chik says:

nancy is versatile and always put in her best. she doesn’t give off the vixen look unless the character requires so. just like her bad-girl character in Twins of Brother, she was still adorable. and i liked her better with ron compared to the boring nun-like leila’s character. LOL

        • sandcherry says:

Agree that Nancy Wu only looked bad if she had to act such types of characters. She was pretty sweet acting as a mute girl in “Gloves Come Off”. It just happened that Nancy Wu had been given more villainous roles to act than good ones, and she acted so well in those characters which left us villainous images.

        • Nicole says:

Nancy Wu was very cute in ACOTOB and DIE, when she didn’t have to act as vixen and her voice was very cute and suitable for her character. At least she didn’t make me cringe.

        • skinnymocha says:

True. I did like her in her other roles and thought she gave good, solid performances. But being a successful actor doesn’t always boil down to skills (unfortunately) – perhaps it down to timing, luck, looks, charisma and audience affinity. Take Linda Chung, for example; her acting isn’t great (I find it bad), but from the very first role I saw her in, I thought she was rather charming and of course there’s that sweet-looking face. Regardless of whatever role she’s playing, people still see that amiable side of her. Perhaps Nancy doesn’t have the face/personality that makes you immediately warm to her?

        • Funn Lim says:

          1. Myolie / Tavia
          3. Fala
          4. Linda
          5. Kate

I understand … wait! Where is 2? Oh come on, just name either one as 2! Anyway I can understand 1 (both names), 4. But 3 is a bit too much to be named fa dan but you know, I am most excited about her in Da Mo Yao. From few tiny blurry pictures, she looks good.

Now I don’t understand 5. When did Kate suddenly become Fadan? Isn’t she Nancy type BUT 2 steps higher? Why must there be 5 fadans? Can’t we stop at 3? 3 are legitimate.

Please tell me who are the 5 siu sangs.

Don’t include Raymond Lam. He is veteran!

        • skinnymocha says:

          Personally, I think:
          #2 = Myolie
Even more so if Tavia wins BA this year. We say Myolie is “equal ranks” right now, but we all know this is down to her award last year.

Haha, I agree with you about #3 and #5 (especially the margin between Kate and the rest). But it just so happens that they’re dominating screen time and have been given lead roles. (Not to mention, the whole favouritism thing.)

Oh, Raymond. I like him, but someone please enlighten me! Does he have that extra “something” that marks him out and makes him a trillion times more popular than the rest? I’ve said this before: he may be good and hard working, but the disproportionate amount of popularity he receives diminishes his achievements (at least in my eyes). Which is a shame.

Hmm, as for the guys – namely lead actors and not “sui sangs” per se, because they’re all too OLD for that:
          1. Wayne — The fan support over the years, the underdog fairytale, the countless lead roles (and in big productions), and the acting chops to top it off. If TVB take him off this pedestal, would viewers have a little revolt?

          2. Kevin — Large fan base, marketability over in mainland, double BA winner. Obviously management likes him.

          3. Moses — I guess he’s just always been around… He should drop the comedy though. Drama is okay, but he’s not a good enough actor to flesh out a character that’s poorly written.

          4. Kenneth Ma — The up-and-coming, the likeable one.

          5. Bosco?

If Wayne doesn’t count, the next one would be Ron. Maybe? Are his fans still with him after all the recent issues? We all know how desperate TVB was in promoting him in the past, but his acting simply wasn’t up to task.

Anyway, top 3 sounds fine to me rather than top 5. But I predict someone will throw a hissy fit and want their share of the limelight. Plus, TVB are just desperate to push their favourites to the top. They always have to have it their way, remember?

        • Funn Lim says:

Bosco is pariah at this moment.

    17. Hannahh says:

I love this girl, she’s talented and have good personality. She will have to be the next fadan.

      • vivien says:

I like her personality too. She looks easygoing and ambitious in acting but not overly headstrong like TY and Myolie, and not dreamy like Fala. She had talents too.

        • sandcherry says:

Mandy Wong has good acting skills as she was professionally trained in Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.

She is not super pretty, but is pretty enough to take 1st lead roles.

Wish her the best in her acting career.

    18. munkimui says:

i thought she saw tavia when i first saw that picture then i after i read her name then knew who she was. she’s pretty.

    19. 4siansLin says:

Mandy is the prettiest of all the TVB actress’, with exception to Christine, who I think is more of a model than an actress. Is she wearing clothes?!?!?!? I would love to…………..

….see more of her on TVB.

    20. chik says:

Nancy and Mandy = next leading ladies.

      PULEASE!!!

      • sandcherry says:

I think Mandy will be more promoted by TVB as 1st lead roles than Nancy Wu. It is not fair for Nancy as she has been with TVB for such a long time and her acting is good as well.

TVB would rather promote Christine Kuo, Eliza Sam, JJ Jia, Sire Ma than Nancy Wu. Sigh ~

    21. ... says:

mandy finally showcased her crying scene in the recent episode of DIVAS IN DISTRESS

she totally deserves to win best supporting actress

    22. passpass says:
