Mandy Wong Leads in New TVB Drama “Three Women, One Gene”

TVB held a costume fitting press conference on Tuesday to promote its upcoming television drama Three Women, One ‘Gene’ <三個女人一個「因」>, produced by Poon Ka-tak (潘嘉德). Principal photography is expected to start soon.

The drama is inspired by the 2015 South Korean drama Kill Me Heal Me, a story about a man suffering from dissociative identity disorder (DID). In Three Women, the lead is portrayed by Mandy Wong (黃智雯), who suffers DID. Her character has three distinctive identities—a professional lawyer, a wild and sexy woman, and a person with a gloomy outlook on life.

three-women-1Mandy’s characters will be involved with three different men—as a lawyer, she is Jason Chan’s (陳智燊) fiancée. When she’s wild and sexy, she has a passionate affair with a model, portrayed by new coming actor Arnold Kwok (郭子豪). Her third personality is involved with Benjamin Yuen (袁偉豪).

“This is a huge challenge,” said Mandy on her thoughts about playing three different characters on the show. “I’ve been researching about this mental disorder for a few months now. Having to play so many different roles at once is intense and I’m afraid I’ll go crazy.”

Mandy said the series, which is currently tied to 20 episodes, has only one story arc. “Because of that, the filming schedule is really tight. But I have rested enough the past couple of months so I’m sure I’ll be fine.”

Earlier, it was reported that Him Law (羅仲謙) was originally casted to costar, but his wife, Tavia Yeung (楊怡), allegedly pulled him out because she did not want him to have rumors with Mandy again. Benjamin Yuen replaced his role.

Mandy said the rumors aren’t true. “It’s common to have cast changes here and there before official filming begins. Ben and I have collaborated before, so I’m excited to work with him again. The report isn’t true. I went out with Tavia and Him recently. Him probably dropped out because of schedule conflicts.”

    1. @kidd I’m looking forward to this drama…so happy TVB has invested interest to promote Mandy. It’s about time.

  1. yahhh for Mandy! Yes agreed with you @kidd hope the show has a good script. Mandy is a good actress and really hope she can shine and become real popular.

  2. promoting these actors to lead a drama means tvb losing more and more their starpower,i watched these actors as second and third line actors for many years now they cant attracts me to watch a drama even with a good script and good story i rather skip it. for me mandy wong is a good actor but she is not pretty and charismatic enough like tavia or myolie. for jason and benjamin they simply cant replace bosco or raymond lam.

so agree w/ you. i don’t like mandy. not so sure why some people above are drawn to her. i find her to be somewhat annoying. i think she’s an okay actress but really lacks the charisma. although i think benjamin is hot and that tvb should give him more opportunities, but i don’t think he’s realy for a lead yet.
let’s see what happens, if mandy does well, she may get more opportunities else, she’s better where she is now

couldn’t have agreed more. NEVER ever like her. She’s not bad looking and looks very similar to that older woman NADIA OR ADIA or whatever she calls herself but other than remembering their face similarities never particularly like anything about her or the old one. haha lol…
I also thought TVB is just desperate b/c Him Law looks much younger pairing up w/any of these so called leads and people what a great looking onscreen couple? like seriously?????????????? HK ppl – their tastes man … that’s something. lol…
These actors/actresses are just lucky now that TVB is so lacking. Although, I never care for those now left MS. HK’s – snake woman among the top – so overrated but yet ppl feel like she’s the best. The only Ms.HK one I actually like was that Cheung Hall Yee? She’s quite alright but she’s like disappeared from the face of the early. :0(

      2. @m0m0 and @kiki I find her likable as she seem very low key and quiet. There’s something calm and normal about her that I like. Similar to the feeling i get when I see Tracy. Def. don’t have a lot of charisma but I think that’s something she can develop as she’s not a bad actress. I think she’s up for the challenge so hoping she’ll pull it off on this one. But if the script suck, then there not much she can do.

  3. Mandy has passed her prime time. I agree she’s not a bad actress but it’s a little too late now to promote her as lead. I’m not excited to see her either. Seems a little dry for lack of a better word. If TVB has to resort to second line actresses, I’d rather watched Natalie Tong.

  4. Mandy looks cute in the picture above; the hairstyle is flattering. The clothes though… eh. Hopefully she’s supposed to be in character. It sounds like a challenging role, and has the potential to be her breakout series.

Both Jason and Benjamin in a series… it’s like a battle to see who can be more wooden. I mean, both are attractive guys who seem to try really hard, so I hope they show improvement.

  5. Ah interesting.. they swap the story around.. girl with personality disorder instead of the guy. Make sense as I can’t think of a younger guy from TVB that can pull off that role. Bosco would have been a good choice but he’s busy making money in China. Story sound interesting enough and I always like Mandy so glad they are promoting her. I think she can handle it too. Def. will be a challenging role for her but if she can pull it off, she can get big.

Like the hair but the outfit? that doesn’t look wild to me.. look more like a junior high student with no time to dress herself!!!

Will be Mandy’s big chance to make to permanent lead status. Quite confident she will do well leading a series especially with the likes of Grace used as comparison.

      1. @jimmyszeto thank goodness tvb isn’t giving this lead role to grace. What a relief! Seriously Mandy should be able to pull it off. Her role as Kwan 二嫂 is memorable.
Jason Chan is so wooden though.

      2. @janet72
Grace can’t pull off 1 well scripted character nevermind 3 personalities. Yeh. Jason can’t act. I find it to hard to watch any scene he’s involved in.

  6. Doomed. Mandy does not have the capabilities to play THREE distinct personalities, one of which being sexy isn’t her forte. The male leads do not excite. Doomed.

    1. I agree with Funn.  While Mandy is a decent actress, being sexy is definitely not one of her strong suits (a little ironic of course given that she came from a beauty pageant), so it’s going to take a lot more effort on her part to convince in that role.  If it were just that one role, then maybe, but to juggle 3 different roles at once plus the responsibility to ‘carry’ the series by herself essentially (judging from the ‘one story arc’ piece + 2 weak male leads and 1 newbie) – it’s too much to throw at Mandy all at one time, especially when her acting still has a lot of room for improvement in the first place.  Also, like the others have said, Mandy doesn’t have charisma and ‘presence’ on screen, which is one (though not the only) important element to being successful as a lead in my opinion. I’m not confident that Mandy will be able to pull this off either, but if by some miracle she does, then she pretty much has it made in terms of first lead status at TVB.

      1. @llwy12
Some will thrive when they are placed in a leading role and some will feel pressured. Mandy so far has been at least solid in every role she has played in her career so I don’t think she will disappoint too much. I’m not a fan of Mandy at all though.

    2. @funnlim do you know who’s capable to play this role? if im the director then i would choose annie liu for this role.

      1. @kolo Annie is ok except I do find her expressionless. I know who isn’t right by description; Mandy.

I know I’m gonna be bombarded with rotten eggs when I suggest a name but I will do it just for the sake of it. Christine Kuo. I find her sexy without being intimidating. Since she lost weight, she is also free, might as well.

I mean she suffered, so she knows gloomy. She looks modern so she can do professional. She can be sexy.

Problem is her acting but … can try.

  7. Agree that acting a sexy lady may not be Mandy’s strong suit. However, if she acts well in this drama series and if this drama series scores high viewership ratings, Mandy’s 1st lead status will be well established.

In fact, it is pretty hard to act 3 characters with totally different personalities, especially for a not-well-established actress like Mandy Wong. I just wish her luck.

  8. i have never seen mandy flop in any role she’s been given. people underestimate her charisma and charm. she’s a solid actress, on the same class as Tavia with less experience to boot. i have faith she’ll crush her naysayers and skeptics with her lead role in this drama. plus, eye candy (though no to Benjamin.)

  9. Surely everybody’s current favourite (it seems, not mine though) Nancy Wu would be a better bet for this challenging role?
