Michelle Chen Breaks into Hollywood with “Pali Road”

Taiwanese actress Michelle Chen (陳妍希) is garnering rave reviews from critics with her performance in the romantic thriller Pali Road <夏威夷之戀>, a co-production between the United States and China.

The movie, directed by Jonathan Lim, stars Michelle as Lily, a young doctor who wakes up from a car accident and finds herself living in a completely different life which she does not remember. The movie also stars Twilight star Jackson Rathbone and Korean American actor Sung Kang.

Shot in Hawaii, Pali Road had its world premiere at the Hawaiian International Film Festival and was nominated for Best Feature Film at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. Michelle herself won Best Actress, and received the “International Star Award” with Sung Kang.

Pali Road is currently showing in cinemas across the United States.

Michelle said she had “many firsts” while making this film. Pali Road is her first English-language movie, her first movie with a Hollywood crew, and her first attempt at doing a thriller. She is happy to see the movie garnering positive results at film festivals. Michelle also had many intimate scenes with Jackson Rathbone, and remarked that those scenes were also another breakthrough for her.

  1. Read rottentomatoes and basically critics say her performance is good but the movie is lifetime ch quality and to me that is not a compliment. Looking at her costar I will say no. As for awards, I believe money muscles did some good here.

      1. @tiffany Never seen her anywhere else. But from what I read, she is a very good actress. Except she is simply wrong as XLN. However great MErryl streep is she can’t be XLN. Same philosophy.

And I don’t get the statement where one is better at acting in movies than in TV. You’re good, you will be good anywhere.

Saw the trailer for the movie above. Frankly, not interested because dime a dozen.

      2. @funnlim Many artists don’t have that onscreen presence in movies in comparison to TV dramas. Felix Wong, Gallen Lo, etc. are more commanding in TV dramas. Vice versa as well – Nic Tse – much better in movies than in TV dramas.

    1. @johnst Michelle looks really pretty in this….
Fan of hers when she did Apple of my Eye….

Surprised that her English is so good, as never heard her speak English before….

This movie will definitely open doors for her in Hollywood…

  2. Always liked Michelle as seen her in TDrama before. Think she has a sweetness/innocence to her that is appealing. Glad she is doing well.

  3. Great to see her in this … and fun to hear her flex her English. Definitely will check this out when I get the chance.

  4. Still surprising and shocking to see her doing so well when she’s a second/third in those tdramas lol…..
After that apple and crowned ” goddess of Taiwan ” hhahaa….I guess some ppl r just LUCKY.

    1. @kiki Well, you just can’t defy luck. Like if some one was BORN billionaire heir…..
But I liked her performance in Apple of My Eye. But not as XLN, of course. As for this movie, I will not watch. Doesn’t seems interesting.

  5. Same crap movies all the time. Asian girl falling over head white men. Every time when ever Hollywood has a script with Asians in it, it will always end with the white guy having the chick and so forth. We must create the world in our own image and not buy into this crap.

    1. @jace99 It is just a movie. So what is wrong with the white guy getting the Asian girl. Do I detect some racism, no. FYI, there are Asian girls with white guys in real life, and no matter how much we create the world in our image, that is a reality we have to deal with.
