New “Housewife Killers,” Ruco Chan and Jason Chan, to Save TVB Ratings?

Ruco Chan (陳展鵬), Louis Yuen (阮兆祥), Jason Chan (陳智燊), and Natalie Tong (唐詩詠) promoted new TVB drama, No Good Either Way <衝呀!瘦薪兵團> the day before. Natalie Tong (唐詩詠) believed that No Good Either Way will be able to attract the housewives in Hong Kong to support the drama, due to “Housewife Killers” Ruco Chan and Jason Chan! With TVB’s recent slump in ratings, will office comedy, No Good Either Way, become the sleeper hit that TVB desperately needs?

Netizens noted that Master of Play <心戰> was unpopular among the middle-aged population due to its serial killer subject material and arcane plot. Thus, TVB wished to win back viewership ratings by airing comedy, No Good Either Way. After filming the drama in April, Producer Amy Wong (王心慰) was asked to rush post-production work to meet the broadcast deadline.

High Hopes for Ruco Chan

No Good Either Way will be broadcast in Hong Kong on June 11, 2012, replacing the 8:30 PM time slot of comedy, House of Harmony and Vengeance <耀舞長安>. No Good Either Way will be available for viewing to mainland China audiences via PPS.tv, in which the online community had good predictions for the drama. TVB comedies were usually well received by local audiences, such as Daddy Good Deeds <當旺爸爸> which peaked at 35 points earlier this year.

Since Ruco Chan shot to fame after last year’s The Other Truth <真相>, he has gained a wide following eager to see him in another TVB drama. In No Good Either Way, Ruco will portray a regular salaryman oppressed by a domineering boss.  Netizens hoped that Ruco will becoming another “Laughing Gor,” in which he will be able to secure popularity and status among TVB’s first line actors when No Good Either Way airs.

Aside from Ruco, No Good Either Way also featured heavily promoted newcomer, Jason Chan. The 34-year-old was born and raised in Great Britain. Jason’s handsome exterior, good education and background has crafted a wholesome image which was well received by audiences since he appeared in Be Home for Dinner <誰家灶頭無煙火>. Jason Chan and Natalie Tong will portray a romantic couple in No Good Either Way.

At the promotional event for No Good Either Way, Natalie revealed that she had suffered from a fever while filming new TVB drama, Detective Columbo < 神探哥倫布>. Her voice grew hoarse after repeatedly shouting in a beating scene with Glen Lee (李霖恩). Natalie was ordered to take a few days of rest to recover before returning to work.

Jayne: Ruco Chan and Jason Chan are very handsome leading men! If the story of No Good Either Way holds up, this series may boost their popularity further. I don’t expect the drama to be a major bomb that would potentially hurt their careers in any way though. The housewives in Hong Kong do need some fluffy diversion from murder and more murders in Master of Play.

  1. I like Ruco Chan & Jason Chan. Looking forward to see this series.

  2. I like Ruco! Can’t wait to see it and i hope the storyline is good.

  3. Love Ruco!let’s see how they do in this drama:)

  4. Wow ! Both good looking “Chans” are together, what a surprise for this series !

  5. See Glen Lee’s name again. I’m happy that he’s getting more mention. I like him in ‘Be Home For Dinner’. I wonder how tall is he. He’s always taller than the rest of the cast in a series and he’s also very fair.

  6. I see so many ‘Be Home For Dinner’ cast in this series.

    Stephen Au
    Crystal Tin
    Jason Chan
    Yeung Chiu Hoi
    Raymond Chiu
    Glen Lee
    Celine Ma
    Matt Yeung
    Katy Kung

  7. Is it just me, or does Ruco Chan have this cunning look about him.

    1. Yes he does. And if he straighten his hair and wear a suit, I always thought he looks like an accountant who is a serial killer. He should have been Moses’ character in Master Of Play. More convincing.

As for Master of Play, I understand the low ratings. for one it is about serial killer and there is nothing possibly redeeming about a man who kills more than once even of he has a mental problem. Two the whole dialogue is meandering nonsense trying to sound deep when it is just too pretentious like a Wong Kar Wai film except Wong Kar Wai film has better cinematography. Third, same old cast.

      1. Funn:

Agree with you. Chan Chin Pang would be a better actor for the role of the serial killer (Ivan) in “Master of Play” because of his eyes. If Chin Pang had better looking eyes, he would not have to wait that long to act 1st lead roles. He might be one of the 1st-tier actor in ATV.

Luckily he is good in his acting and has a beautiful and charming voice. I hope these would help him stay in 1st lead roles.

      2. Master Of Play was expected to have low ratings in the first place. They tried it with When Heaven Burns. If that failed, then tvb should have had second thoughts about airing MOP which is similar. They’re just making a hole for themselves to drop in. Now we lost a 4 week slot which could have aired another series this year. wasted to an unpopular series.

Ruco has the evil look. He did more antagonistic roles before he got popular in The Other Truth. So yes, maybe if he played the serial killer, it may change how housewives watch it coz their favourite is the main lead.

    2. Ruco Chan does have cunning look, especially, when he smiles

      1. Chan Chin Pang looks a lot better with eyeglasses on (because of his not- good-looking eyes). Therefore, I prefer to see him in modern dramas than ancient ones (people don’t wear eyeglasses).

      2. Sandcherry,
I found Ruco’s eyes to look fine, but the glasses do soften his look. Since the airing of “The Other Truth,” he wears glasses everyday, so it would be nice for him to change his look once in a while. I think he dresses much older than his real age due to his fashion choices. So no need to look so mature all the time.

      3. Jayne:
Agree that Chin Pang looks older than his real age (35). He looks maturer than people of his age. Jason was born in the same year in Dec. while Chin Pang was born in Jan., and Raymond Wong is 1 yr. and 7 months older than Chin Pang. Among the three of them, Chin Pang seems to look the oldest.

A lot of people say Chin Pang has evil eyes. In a way, I tend to agree. Perhaps it is due to all the villainous characters that he did in the past. But his eyes do take away some credits from his image.

Though I like Chin Pang, his voice and his acting, I don’t like his taste in fashion. He does not seem to know how to dress himself well. His body is not perfect – longer upper body and shorter lower body. If he knows to how to dress well, he will definitely achieve better images. Also he has to learn how to match colours well. I cannot stand the colours of his clothes …….. always wrongly matched. Maybe he thinks it is trendy, but I don’t.

      4. Sandcherry,
I get the impression that Ruco does not wish to be considered a heart throb. He wants to be considered a serious actor known for his acting than looks. Maybe that is why he wishes to carry a more mature image.

If you are bothered by his clothes, you can focus on his face. 🙂

Most artists do not have good fashion taste. We should have a celebrity image makeover reality tv show.

      5. Jayne:

I don’t mind if Chan Chin Pang does not have fashion tastes. He can just dress casually (or formally for the appropriate occasions) with a plain shirt and casual pants or jackets. But he always wears colourful clothes (e.g. a pair of shiny green ankle-length pants and a long orange jacket). It shows off his long upper body and short lower body.

      6. @Sandcherry. Yup so when it’s Jason’s birthday later this year it’ll be 12/12/12 🙂 Just the date alone should be very memorable!

  8. Jason is who in this series? Didn’t notice him in 1st episode.

Did saw the 1st episode and except some questionable casting decision in some ladies who I feel is not funny in this sort of comedy drama, the rest are ok. Ruco was ok. In fact 1st episode was ok even if illogical.

    1. Jason plays Aaron, the guy who took a vacation in the first episode.

  9. Glad that Producer Amy Wong asked Chan Chin Pang to be the narrator (or 1st person) in “No Good Either Way” ……. to make good use of his beautiful voice.

  10. Jason’s more like 3rd male lead after Ruco and Louis.

    1. i would have thought bobo would be third male lead judging by poster arrangement, him singing with the first two male leads and from wht ive seen he had more scene shown in the theme song mv.

But none the less glad Jason is in another series!!

  11. I’m enjoying the series so far, actually laughed out loud.

  12. I like both Jason & Ruco.
Very happy TVB is promoting them!!!
BUT Really hated the curly hair on Ruco- what’s with this kind of hair-do?????
Even Bosco looks awful with that look as well!

  13. Just saw Jason’s performance for 2 episodes, quite prominent role but I am sorry to say I am not impressed with his performance. I hope he has improved because right now in this series I find his delivery of lines very very annoying because he kept smiling and talking and seem like mild shaking his head a lot. In other words he is the fluffier version of Ron Ng.

    1. Funn,
“Just saw Jason’s performance for 2 episodes, quite prominent role but I am sorry to say I am not impressed with his performance.”

I saw Jason Chan in “Be Home for Dinner” and the few episodes that I watched, he was quite mid-range in his emotions, line delivery etc. He will have to rely on personal charisma while honing his acting skills. Certainly having a close friend such as Stephen Au can broaden his acting perspective.

  14. This show is great! Im actually looking forward to the next episodes which doesn’t happen often these days.
