Plastic Surgery: Tavia Yeung’s Growing “Pinnochio” Nose

Since highest-earning fadan, Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼) left TVB, Tavia Yeung (楊怡) successfully climbed to the top. Recently, Tavia’s series aired one after another. Rather than focusing on her acting, the audience noticed that Tavia’s nose was growing like wooden puppet, Pinnochio! With the healthy ratings of TVB’s new series, The Other Truth <真相>, Tavia’s plastic surgery rumors were once again in rife discussion. Many netizens commented that watching Tavia’s series was similar to watching the chronicles of Pinnochio!

Allegedly, due to the wide media coverage of Tavia’s “Pinnochio nose,” Tavia had to maintain the shape of her nose through annual hyaluronic acid injections. Compared to her flat nose shape when she first entered the entertainment industry in 1995, Tavia’s current nose was a lot higher and sharper.

The Changing Shape of Tavia’s Nose Over the Years

In 2001, during The Awakening Story <婚前昏後>, the bridge of Tavia’s nose was low and the tip was round and did not appear prominent. During the filming of Golden Faith <流金歲月>, her nose was wide and not long.

In 2007, along with her rising career, Tavia’s nose shape changed. The bridge of her nose heightened and the tip of her nose was slightly more prominent.

In 2010, Tavia’s nose grew mysteriously longer while filming The Mysteries of Love <談情說案> [and Yes Sir, Sorry Sir <點解阿Sir係阿Sir>.  The tip of her nose was very prominent and resembled Pinnochio’s nose. However, Tavia denied plastic surgery and insisted that the results were due to make-up. In 2011, after years of modifying its shape, Tavia’s nose appeared longer and the tip grew as well.

Annual Hyaluronic Acid Injections In Nose

An inside source revealed, “Actually Tavia’s nose is not considered to be too flat. However, her nose bridge is not high and the nose tip a bit wide. Since she is afraid of pain, she will not opt for plastic surgery. Several years ago, Tavia started getting hyaluronic acid injections from a doctor. Each time, she received a minor injection, so the results were not too noticeable [by the public at first]. In recent years, she told the doctor that she wanted her nose to be more prominent. After the [recent] hyaluronic acid injections, the public commented that she had a ‘Pinnochio nose.’ The hyaluronic acid gets absorbed by the body within six months to a year. Each time Tavia stars in a prominent series or important advertisement, she will see the doctor first to avoid her nose appearing differently.”

Allegedly, Tavia will see the doctor several days prior to the onset of an important project. After the hyaluronic acid injections, there will be minor swelling in the area. Since Tavia received the injections on a regular basis to maintain her “Pinnochio nose,” there were periods of two to three months in which Tavia’s nose would have minor differences. Since the tip of Tavia’s nose sometimes appeared rounder while other times sharper, no wonder netizens also noticed the difference.

Tavia’s Doctor Revealed She Was A Frequent Customer

Accompanied by a female friend, a Sudden Weekly reporter had a one-hour consultation with Tavia’s doctor, Chow Wing Chow (周永就) in the Central district. Aside from explaining the use of hyaluronic acid injections, Dr. Chow also revealed that Tavia Yeung was a frequent customer.

After assessing the reporter’s female friend’s facial features, the following conversation took place at Dr. Chow’s clinic:

D=Dr. Chow;  F= Reporter’s female friend

D= To get hyaluronic acid injections in the nose bridge and nose tip would cost $6,500 HKD per injection shot. The results would last for one year.

F= Will there be side effects?

D= No. After the injection shot, there is usually a minor redness and a little mark. However, the mark resembles a tiny mosquito bite and not noticeable. After the hyaluronic acid shots, you can go out to see other people and even go on the airplane.

F= Can you lower the price a little. I was recommended by Miss Yeung to come here.

D= Which Miss Yeung?

F= Ah Yi recommended me to come here. Since she is an actress, of course she has money!

(Dr. Chow laughed and folded his arms.)  D= Ah, Tavia Yeung. Actually, the price is very fair. Tavia has not come here as frequently lately…. She really turned more beautiful lately! Aside from her, many TVB actresses are my clients!

F= After getting the hyaluronic acid shots, will the nose become stiff and hard, resembling a wooden puppet’s nose?

D= Of course not. It is enough to get one shot each year. If you are too anxious and get the shots too frequently, of course there will be problems!

Tavia Denied Altering Nose

At a recent promotional event with the 2011 Miss Hong Kong contestants, Tavia responded to allegations that she had altered her nose, “Reporters have touched my nose and examined it. I did seek the consultation of Dr. Chow many years ago to remove a birthmark. I wanted to say hi to the doctor because the birthmark near my brow bone is not completely gone yet. I have to ask him to follow up on the matter.”

Tavia said she did not mind the recent Sudden Weekly report. If she were to receive plastic surgery, there were many areas that she would need to fix. “I want to make my nose higher. If I needed to fix it, I’ll wait until I’m older. I’ll just get facials now.”

Excerpts from Sudden Weekly # 834 and Appledaily

Jayne: It’s quite obvious that Tavia did get something done to her nose to make the profile more defined and nose tip more prominent. The results seem the most obvious in Yes Sir, Sorry Sir.

  1. Here is a link of Victoria Principal, an American actress before and after plastic surgery. OMG, she looks like a plastic doll, just like DoDo cheng nowadays.

    http://inyourface.ocregister.com/2008/06/09/victoria-principal-said-she-wouldnt-reveal-plastic-surgery-but-those-photos/

Hopefully, Tavia’s nose will not fall off like what happened to Michael Jackson in the past. I used to watch Tavia’s TVB series but no more since I found she is the typical attention seeker who is willing to gamble her image, i mean really HER IMAGE has changed tremendously. I am pretty sure she will eventually look like Michael Jackson and Victoria Principal. Man, that will be one scare woman in the very near future.

    1. Thanks for the link TNT2! Yup, that is how someone will look after having plastic surgery and other cosmetic procedures done over time. Victoria Principal looks sort of scared me too. I think she would have looked better if she aged naturally.

I watch series with Tavia in it since I don’t watch a series just for the cast. There are other things more important than just the cast. I don’t think her image will help much if she doesn’t improve in her acting skills. It is no use for her to not admit having things done to her since we can all see it now and will see even more of it in the future.

      1. She won’t turn into a zombie or plastic doll just because she injected hyaluronic acid in her nose. It’s even permanent.

So, she will still look human as she aged.

She only did something to her nose, that’s very far from a surgery maniac.

      2. @TNT2,
I think you are going overboard… Tavia did not even have a full plastic surgery procedure and you are already saying that she will become like Micheal Jackson. If she did things like Dodo Cheng, then I can agree but I don’t think she has yet. If she continues to get these injections, then other things may happen that we don’t know about, but I am not sure if she will turn into Micheal Jackson at all…
I think that IF Tavia does get plastic surgery in the future, she may get addicted to it like a number of people do but who really knows if she will or not?? However, she is not at that stage yet. You should not say that she is a plastic surgery maniac since all she is doing for now(from what we know anyways) is getting injections for her nose. Hey, if she likes the way her nose is due to the injection, she may get a full nose job for it since she has the money for it…

      3. no wonder pinnochio boy Tavia,
Tavia aged and got so so ugly.

    2. You are too exaggerate. Tavia just adjusted her nose a little. This is very far from what Michael Jackson did.

      1. The trouble with injecting whatever into your face is your face tends to look waxy if you repeatedly inject. I hope Tavia understands that no matter what she does to her nose, she is at best average in looks. It is her ability to be credible actress and able to emote is her finest asset and I am afraid she might move to Botox next. If anything learn from Nicole Kidman.

      2. @TNT2

I think what Kidd meant was that she just did a small job in comparison to what Michael Jackson did which was full on surgery.

      3. @ CY

“I think what Kidd meant was that she just did a small job in comparison to what Michael Jackson did which was full on surgery.”

Yes, that exactly what I mean. But, someone who pretended to be smart doesn’t seem to understand this at all.

        @ TNT2

“@Kidd, “Tavia just adjusted her nose a little”, Wow! you are indeed a dreamer.”

No, I’m not a dreamer. Her adjustment is considered small compared to your example of Micheal Jackson.

“Did u even read the article, Tavia gets annual injection, so imagine she has one every year for the next ten or twenty years.”

        Yes, I read the article.
Fact 1: She’s suspected to have gotten injection
Fact 2: She has just adjusted her nose not long ago.
Fact 3: She has not got injection for 10 to 20 years. She can change her mind and stop the injection. It’s not permanent.

“It’s gullible people like yourself needs to wake up. I hope people like you don’t procreate, no wonder there are so many bozos in Hong Kong nowadays.”

Neither should you. Equating an injection to an isolated area (the nose) to full on surgery doesn’t show you as any smarter either.

      4. @ Funn

Well, lets hope that with the negative feedback on her new nose, she will stop the injection and revert back to her old one.

Maybe Tavia thought that with all the actresses around her getting more and more glamorous and beautiful, she need to step up her game. No matter what, the entertainment industry is a very shallow industry. You need to look beautiful onscreen because audience want to see beautiful people.

There’s also rumour that Ms.Lok advises her artists to improve their look. Do you believe it?

      5. @Kidd

“But, someone who pretended to be smart doesn’t seem to understand this at all.”

Yea, some people like to read what they think into things instead of reading what is written properly.

“There’s also rumour that Ms.Lok advises her artists to improve their look. Do you believe it?”

I don’t know but I wouldn’t be surprised if she did. She doesn’t seem to be a very nice person (by that I mean biased and in need of buttering up.) If she did, she could easily pressure any new artist to get plastic surgery if she deemed it necessary.

      6. Kidd, can you actually remove the collagen? Or I assume collagen will be absorbed so it gets lesser if not injected again??

      7. TNT2;

“@kidd, the problem with this world is too many gullible and naive people like Kidd who doesn’t much about anything. Did u even read the article, Tavia gets annual injection, so imagine she has one every year for the next ten or twenty years. Almost all medical treatments have side effects. I should know since I have many family members in the medical field. It’s gullible people like yourself needs to wake up. I hope people like you don’t procreate, no wonder there are so many bozos in Hong Kong nowadays.”

Kidd is not from HK by the way.

You know what’s the problem? Too many people in this world assume one act means everything they think it is. Equating everything having the same weight, the same consequences. It is injection to her nose. HER NOSE. One place. Hardly major compared to what Dodo Cheng and countless of Korean or western stars did to their faces. One action can have multiple consequences, 1 doesn’t equate as all. Glad to know you have many family members in medical field BUT are you in medical field? I mean just because 1 is in medical field doesn’t make entire family the only qualified opinion in medical issues. There are always those who failed, the black sheeps, like you said, the bozos you see. What Kidd said was exactly as she said, nothing more and nothing less. What Tavia did isn’t Michael Jackson, for one she did not change from asian to white although her nose suggests that path. Why should Tavia kill herself over an adjustment even major or even minor to her face? It is her right to mess with her face if she wants to. The only reason she will kill herself is because people keep pointing, laughing, insulting. I have my fair share of commenting on her new nose, same as Myolie as well, but I wouldn’t say what she did was drastic. It did give her this glamorous look, and of course if she continues, she will in the end look waxy, she is beginning to look waxy. No one is saying you’re wrong, but just because you’re not outright wrong doesn’t make your opinion the only right one. And I find you very very rude to in effect call a fellow member of this wonderful place stupid and damn her to infertility. If anything, you just negated your opinion with being the bozo yourself.

      8. “There’s also rumour that Ms.Lok advises her artists to improve their look. Do you believe it?”

Yes I do. And I doubt only Miss Lok alone.

      9. Lol at the real bozo TNT2 here. Not only did you not read her comment properly, you are so strung up to insult to the extent whether she has the right to procreate. Running out of lithium?

      10. Collagen? Collagen drinks can be easily obtained at Watsons and such 🙂

If it’s cosmetic procedure, in the old days it was silicone. Due to the adverse side effect, nowadays they inject body fat (yeap, mostly from your tummy or butt) and inject on cheekbones etc (still a bit ewww). Not sure how long it will last though.

More common procedures for skin effect, apart from botox is the injection of Vitamin C. It gives a glowing skin, but will need frequent injection like every 3 months, I heard.

      11. @ sehseh

I’ll stick to normal facial and moisturizer.

The Collagen injection sounds eww to me too, and I have injection phobia.

      12. Kidd, when you’re 50, you have nothing to lose. Inject all you want! But not at our age. We are still young.

      13. I don’t find it hard to believe that 620 encourages her artists to improve their looks. If that’s true 620 is really shallow.

      14. Sehseh,
I have tried drinking the Japanese collagen drinks, which does plump up my skin. It makes my face appear plumper and also made me retain more water in my body, making me appear swollen and heavier, so I didn’t like it.

Lol, a good skincare routine should be sufficient in reviving the skin.

Collagen injections would be more targeted towards specific areas, while collagen drinks disperse collagen throughout the entire body.

      15. @Funn,
I agree about Tavia and think that instead of concentrating on changing her nose, she should concentrate on improving her acting skills and taking care of her health. If she wants to continue to act and make more money, she should keep herself healthy because you can’t do anything without health.

I also don’t think Tavia will improve her looks that much even if she did have a full nose job. I have a feeling that Tavia may not just move to botox, but maybe even full plastic surgery procedures so she doesn’t have to keep on maintaining her nose like this… But who knows??

      16. I think these injections may even give Tavia some waxy look just like botox if she gets them too much… The next thing you know, it may become hard for her to smile… I think waxy looks can get scary too. I wonder if you will get back to your normal face if you stop the injections all together? But then again, it may become an addiction for some people once they get them.

      17. Jayne, if you are not allergic to seafood, maybe you can try marine base supplement like Imedeen. Good skincare can take care of external skin, but as we age, our skin loses collagen which cannot be replenished as much by our body.

The best thing abt those collagen drinks is that you don’t need to take daily after the initial box. But still, it can be a little costly 😛

I have a bad habit of not finishing my supplements and vitamins because I tend to skip taking them due to forgetfulness 😛

      18. @Jayne,
I think drinking water is one of the best things to take care of the body and skin… I love drinking water but one of the downsides is constantly going to the bathroom…

      19. ” If that’s true 620 is really shallow.”

It’s not 620 who’s shallow, the industry is.

      20. Sehseh,
I bought some cans of Fine Hyaluron collagen powder (derived from fish scales) from sasa.com and drank it for a month. I saw immediate smoothing and firming of my skin within one week. However, since I was drinking the collagen, it had to be digested before I would see any effects on my skin. After a month, I felt a slight slowing down in my digestion (I have a sluggish digestive system to begin with). In addition, I felt that my face was becoming too plump, due to skin swelling from collagen intake. I reduced the powder intake, but the effect on skin texture did not become as noticeable.

Do you have personal success with Imedeen collagen drink? I understand they make skincare supplement pills too?

After I switched to Sulwhasoo skincare regime 2 months ago, my skin is now more hydrated and skin tone and texture better, so I haven’t used collagen supplements since. But still interested in find out more about these products for future consideration.

You seem well informed about the latest skincare brands. What products do you recommend?

        @HeTieShou,
I know water is good, but water alone does not give me miracles unfortunately.

      21. @ Jayne

Gong Li said her secret to beauty is only to drink a lot of water. 😛

“I have a bad habit of not finishing my supplements and vitamins because I tend to skip taking them due to forgetfulness “

We have the same bad habit.

I change to a new beauty saloon for facial (on nearer to my house) this year and the lady boss introduced a package to me that include Black Wa Wa treatment. She said it’s a machine that use laser to treat your face to retain youthfulness. She said the effect is quite lasting. I don’t dare to try since it involve laser to my skin and deeper. So, I didn’t sign up but choose to pay my visit and use do the normal massage.

I check on the net, but, could get info on Black Wa Wa.

      22. Kidd,
Unfortunately finding good skincare is like trial and error. Finding a suitable beauty salon is the same. Be very careful of what you do to your face because it can damage it in the future.

I thought a lot of routines that erase skin pigmentation use blue light technology. How safe is that?

I used a glycolic acid cleanser for the last few years and it worked initally but long-term, it did a lot of damage in thinning my skin and drying it out.

I am very happy with my current Sulwhasoo products, especially its peel-off mask, gives the skina very vibrant boost. Hehe been intending to write a beauty product review to discuss benefits in length.

      23. @Kidd, there were rampant rumors of Gong Li using Gold Thread Facelift (where fine gold thread are inserted under your skin).

        @Jaynestar,

My sis and mum took Imedeen which helped to get rid of their brown spots. They now have pills version too.

I hate pills and the hassle of mixing up drinks, so I prefer bottled collagen like Kinohimitsu for their convenience. Just take out from freezer and drink. The effect is prominent too.

      24. @SehSeh,

Do you have any good recommendation of collagen drinks in Malaysia? I’m kinda doing survey on them to find the best among others. I think our govn has recently declared collagen drinks brand Lennox is unsafe to consume. Luckily I didnt buy any as I was planning to buy Lennox to try. Any good brand available in the market??

      25. Ask Esther Kwan who has beautiful complexion despite her age (bird’s nest perhaps?) and Fann Wong who all along has great complexion but how she maintains (eating gold perhaps?)

      26. @ Funn Lim

“Ask Esther Kwan who has beautiful complexion despite her age (bird’s nest perhaps?) and Fann Wong who all along has great complexion but how she maintains (eating gold perhaps?)”

Just curious, are you being sarcastic or serious? I don’t follow either of their news so don’t if that has been mentioned before. Birds nest has been known for its beautifying properties since ancient times, but gold?? Seems weird for this purpose… according to wikipedia, it doesn’t seem to have any effect on the human body at all…

      27. *** Whoops, posted on the wrong thread.. Sorry

        * Meant to say don’t know if that’s true..

      28. CY, the last place you should believe is in Wikipedia. Not altogether bad but not 100% truth. No, I am not being sarcastic but merely throwing a word out. And there are beauty products with gold in it, some do eat gold leaf or whatever they are called. Who know? It might be helpful. But bird’s nest, that if Esther Kwan is her beauty product, I shall believe.

      29. @ Funn Lim

Yes, Wikipedia can be very unreliable at times especially during science assignments (haih). But most of the time I find it all right and always double check when possible..

“No, I am not being sarcastic but merely throwing a word out.”

Thanks for the clarifying it. I’m pretty bad at recognising sarcasm or the lack of it..

I didn’t know about gold in comestic products. Interesting to know. Thanks for the info.
BTW, wasn’t Esther a spokeperson for a brand of bird’s nest some years ago?

      30. @Sehseh,
        Thanks for the recommendations!

        @Funn,
I thought bird’s nest was mostly hype. In East Magazine, I have read some exposes on the scandal-ridden industry, where the bird’s nest was heavily bleached from gray matter (in its collected form) to whitish color, which would appear more clean and appealing to consumers. In addition, the bits and pieces are molded and additives, such as potato flour used as filler to fill in the gaps and create the perfect leaf shape.

Anyhow, it’s too expensive to eat on a regular basis.

    3. That is way too extreme to compare her to Michael Jackson. I see nothing wrong with nose. If you look straight at her face she is actually beautiful and proportion with her short hair too.

  2. That’s what I noticed too, her nose is too big and looks like pinochio – I prefer her nose before not so prominent.

    1. Maybe too long? her nose seems to have gotten longer than before after the injection. Honestly, I don’t have high hope in plastic surgery although I’ve nothing against it. Maybe they will look good when they’re young but when they gets older…the plastic enhancement will definitely appears visible

      1. One of my mom’s friends had a nose job when she was younger but had to take it out since something was developing inside her nose. Once she took it out, she looked worse then how she did before the surgery. Even plastic surgery does not last a life time, so I think some artists do think about that before they actually do it…

      2. @HTS,

I remember someone mentioned about a rising number of artists getting plastic surgery done on their face/body were to compete with their competitors. They said because in this industry line, producers/owners/bosses tends to choose those really pretty artist as their product carrier/representative therefore, they would do anything just to look beautiful even if the surgery will bring harm to their health later. I guess that’s the life in this kind of industry.

I agree with you that plastic surgery only looks good when you’re young and it will alter your face once you got older. I’ve seen neighbour had plastic surgery done on her chin and she looks urgh… odd/ugly with the excessive pointed chin looking on her face now. She’s around 40-50.

  3. tvb should start a series about plastic operations ala nip tuck.

many artist are already experts in tne field LOL.

    1. Hey good idea exiodus! I think TVB is currently running out of ideas so they may do that eventually…

      1. @exoidus,

I’ve the best artist to play the surgery surgeon in mind who already done plenty of alterations on his face, I think you know who Im thinking 😛

      2. haha i think i do 🙂

btw i also want to see a spy agent with high tech. series ala “chuck” that would be fun. tired of watching ordinary cop series.

    2. I there are some topics TVB will always stay away from, a series centred around plastic surgery is likely one of them. Series dealing with the supernatural in a real-world setting is another. And quite possibly a series about westerners 😛

  4. Watching TOT now. Tavia looks very mature in the series and she looks older than her character age of 32. I think it’s the combination of several factors that make her seem so.

    – Her dressing and hairstyle which is a very mature style
    – Her character being Natalie’s master and acting all authoritative and teacher towards her all the time
    – Her character having been married and divorced
    – The overall way she carries herself. Just give a very mature woman feel.

    1. I didn’t know her character age was 32, but yeah she does seem more mature than that. This Mavis character is not very compelling. My favorite character so far is Louis Yuen’s, but I can’t remember his name because everybody calls him “fat boy”.

Man…I’d have such low self esteem if everybody called me that as my nickname. But I digress.

I like Tavia’s dresses though. However, she looks a bit more matronly than Myo did as a barrister though because of those dresses and the choice of more subdued colors. Natalie looks much younger with her dyed hair and cute puffy sleeved tops. Yes, I love clothes. I was surprised that she was married to the white guy…I didn’t follow the story line much for her because Ruco is more interesting..but I always raised my eyebrow when the husband came into the picture. Mavis seems embarrassed that she was ever married to him.

There’s this one character that’s kind of annoying/funny…what’s her name…Emily, but I always laugh when she says, “Wal~lace”

      1. “My favorite character so far is Louis Yuen’s, but I can’t remember his name because everybody calls him “fat boy”.”

Interesting. This is the second time I read that someone likes Louis’s character. Am I the only one who finds him annoying?

“I like Tavia’s dresses though. However, she looks a bit more matronly than Myo did as a barrister though because of those dresses and the choice of more subdued colors.”

Me too! 😀 I don’t know who’s outfits I like more. Tavia wears dresses while Myolie wears a more formal outfit, with pants. So jealous when Tavia shows off her beautiful legs in those dresses. I also deem they seem rather comfortable, much more comfy than all the layers Myolie is wearing.

However, packaged together, I prefer Myolie’s entire look more, especially with that new cute haircut and that nose. 😉

” I was surprised that she was married to the white guy…”

Same here. When they were saying, “Mavis’s ex-husband…”, I like “WHAT?! Who was the husband?” She was married before? It’s because most TVB series does not start out with the female lead married and definitely not to a white guy.

“Mavis seems embarrassed that she was ever married to him.”

He seemed way too immature for her. I scratched my head trying to think why they dated in the first place. And he didn’t even give Wallace a chance. Must have learned for the better. 🙂

“There’s this one character that’s kind of annoying/funny…what’s her name…Emily, but I always laugh when she says, “Wal~lace””

This woman is a complete joke.

      2. @ imapheng

High 5! I like Louis Yuen too after watching episode 5 and 6. My fave have kinda shift from Wallace to James after episode 6. I like his earnestness, him going against the odds and never give up attitude (First, to be come a lawyer, then, to help Benz), and his good heart. I just hope he remain humble and not let success get into his head.

I also like Emily. I know she’s supposed to be annoying. But, she’s just too funny. rofl.

      3. @Chriselle

I also thought Myo looks extremely polished and professional trendy. I noticed the female lead thing too, they are usually almost always virginal or sexless. Well, Tavia is still sort of gives the impression of being so. This is why I liked Myo’s Wong Sze Fu haha. That there is real woman!

      4. @kidd

I hope he retains his righteous but haplessly quirky likability too. I like the Mom too. His mom was so funny! I think Emily is so funny because she’s just ridiculous.

      5. “I also like Emily. I know she’s supposed to be annoying. But, she’s just too funny. rofl.”

I wish Louis just knocked off that nose of hers. 😀

        @iampheng,

I like the mother too! She surprised me in the jury case. 😀

      6. I cannot stand Myo and I found out her hair is ugly and she is annoying in Ghetto Justice. I like Joyce screen time much better than her.

I love the scene when Louis Yuen and Emily in one episode. She goes to his office to trade off the check which Louis tore off the $200,000 cashier check. He then called her an Old woman and she goes crazy and started going after him. It ended there but it cracked me up.

I like this movie much better than Ghetto Justice. But in Ghetto Justice I like Kevin and every other cast except Myo. Her acting is so so but she tends to go overboard with her nagging and try to criticizing and look down on poor people.

      7. LOL, “fat boy die” is great i love his funny scenes in TOT. it’s true and intereting what he represents that we live in a society where looks have become the most important thing in life except money ofcourse.

hope he will play more of this type of supporting roles.

      8. To be honest. This is the first Louis Yuen’s role I ever like. I never like his roles before.

Good that TVB give him a role that is likable and inspiring for once. In the past, all he played are

        – a foolish person with limited ability but think he’s smart (CBML)
        – someone with a lot of unfavourable/unlikeable personality flaws (GOH, MR)
        – useless bump

You know, I really want him to be given a role of a smart professional that is serious, confident and capable. See how he handles it.

      9. @ Kidd

Don’t forget his role in Colourful Life..
        CBML + HOG/MR
Oh how i hated his character in that series..

  5. I think the reason Tavia is seeking other things to do in her spare time such as ‘working’ on her nose might be because she has nothing else to ‘work’ on. All her TVB scripts are so derivative. Every modern series she has been in lately is like the same character… you can literally watch her between series and think its the same person now…

    1. yeah maybe so but her acting is great and her crying scenes are pretty convincing to me.

she shoule change her hair and maybe put less makeup on if possible.

      1. I actually like her with short hair than long hair. She looks young and fresh.

      2. You might not notice but her crying used to be better and more affecting before she had this giant nose. Now her crying feels like she’s following some set formulas to me and doesn’t give the effect anymore.

      3. I actually really liked Tavia in early series when she played supporting roles like W Files and Shades of Truth. I thought her acting was very natural. But her roles since Beyond the Realm etc has been eeeeeee now all i ever notice in her closeups is her nose…

      4. SDS,
Tavia is a capable actress. However, I feel that her interpretation and acting methods are too similar in different series. Her expressions are the same and she looks like she is playing the same character. Thus, there is no element of surprise. Due to the extreme personality of Sau Lei Mui in “The Mystery of Love,” I actually enjoyed her perkiness in that series. Otherwise, she seems a little too upright and straight-laced recently. No enough in variation and rather than blame casting choices, I think it is due to Tavia’s interpretation of her roles and lack of risk-taking.

Sometimes, there is the danger of being too successful. Tavia is now considered TVB’s top fadan and appears to have an established approach to acting. And perhaps due to her current success, she may take less risks with her acting and resort to the same acting approach and formula. I’ll wait and see if this is the case in her upcoming series, “On Call 36 Hours.”

An actor needs to take risks and cannot just live upon past acting accomplishments. Without new approaches and risk-taking and continually churning out the such similar performances, there is very little surprise for the audience.

In this aspect, Kevin Cheng’s role as Law Ba worked the element of surprise in “Ghetto Justice” very much to his favor, making his performance refreshing. He left behind most of his old acting methods and approaches to portray the role in a new light. There was a risk to appear so uncouth onscreen, pick his nose, etc. He could have lost fans. However, if he cared too much about his handsome image, then he would have been unable to immerse in his role. When an actor departs too extremely from past image and acting methods, forging new territory and abandoning past successful proven methods, this is a risk that not everyone is willing to take. Thus, I applaud Kevin for taking such a risk in “Ghetto Justice.”

      5. @Jayne

I think you’ve hit the mark in regards to how she’s interpreting her roles. I do believe its still partially a scripting and dialogue issue as well because she is a versatile actress at the end of the day.

I have a feeling her doctor role will be similar to her recent teacher and lawyer role. She’s using her cardboard cut out for ‘professionals’. Hopefully I’m wrong though.

      6. don’t think “36 hours and call” will be any different. she is a good actress but her roles is getting a little boring. however i think only think of linda that an challenge for position as the rest especially kate can’t really act

      7. SDS,
Sheren Tang revealed that she and Bowie Lam have been editing their script lines for years, due to the inadequacy of TVB script lines.

Due to the tight filming schedule, Sheren revealed that series often start filming before the script is complete. Producers have “enlightened ideas” that they wish to incorporate into the script last minute. Scriptwriters are told to incorporate those ideas the night before and have revised script ready in the morning. Thus there are a lot of inadequacies in such “flying papers” and seasoned actors often have to revise their own lines to ensure that the dialogue is in accordance with the character’s personality.

You may argue that it is too much to expect all TVB actors to cross the line the do the job of scriptwriter by revising their lines. However, it depends on each actor’s interpretation of what they feel is their responsibility. Should they clean up the script if their character is assigned poor dialogue? I think so, if it warrants certain changes in word choice and conveys the basic scene required. I am not saying they should cross the line and start changing the intended meaning or message of the scene, rather enhancing it with better script. In the end, the audience will blame such inconsistencies on the actor for acting inconsistent from scene to scene. A seasoned actor will be able to cover this and ensure smoother transitions from different scenes, thus making the performance in line with the true character.

That’s why actors such as Sheren, Wong Hei, and Bowie Lam give such memorable performances because they go above-and-beyond the call of duty to not only fully immerse in their roles but also adapt their dialogue to ensure a more complete performance.

Due to the inadequacies in TVB’s script, thus I think Tavia needs to look deeper into the script and incorporate such changes to further layer her performances. I think Tavia has perfected the technical emotions and thus I see her as a capable actress. However, there is a spark missing. Aside from the risk-taking, I think there is also a certain lack of creativity in seeing the finer differences between her character roles.

      8. @Jayne,

Oh yea, good point. I’ve forgotten the fact many older generation TVB actors have said they often alter their dialogue like Bobby, Dicky and Maggie Cheung (only based my on my memory). I think its just the style of TVB filming, they don’t give enough respect to the products they broadcast, so becomes a bit of a churning factory at times. Its also a preparation issue.

I guess we can’t expect actors to take such initiative especially if its going to tick management off. But at the end of the day its going to reflect badly on the actor themself, like Tavia- who has been turning rather boring performances this year. To her defense, the characters were quite bland, not much she could’ve done I suppose…

And I also dislike how TVB can’t create more novel female roles. Personally I think La Femme Desperado is the most memorable TVB series with females in the lead. Nothing else comes to mind.

      9. I think it’s Tavia herself that gotten boring. She doesn’t add variation to her different characters and end up looking and acting just like another Tavia in different series.

I think Myolie is getting better than Tavia now after her success capturing the audience in GJ and TRB. Linda also captured audience heart in YSSS.

Kate is just a no no. With her level of acting now I can’t see her yet as a top TVB actress in near future.

      10. I have a feeling Tavia will deliver the same performance in 36 Hours on Call. As she ages and especially with that short hair, I think she will only get boring with all her professional roles unless she is given a challenge. She use to be more fun and carefree in her earlier days with a more variety of roles.

Maybe let us see her in a comedy role for a change?

I use to think Tavia was the best ‘cryer’ (especially in Heart of Greed) in the new generation for TVB until they started giving her every role with similar characteristics — and I completely wanted to take back what I said.

      11. “I use to think Tavia was the best ‘cryer’ (especially in Heart of Greed) in the new generation for TVB until they started giving her every role with similar characteristics — and I completely wanted to take back what I said.”

Same here. I used to hail her as the best cryer in her generation too but now I realized that she use the same method of crying in most her series so it comes again to her using the same set of acting methods in all her series.

    2. she is still one of the very best alongside linda la.

the others just can’t deliver a cry scene properly. seeing kate in w&W i wanted to slap her face for crying…

      1. That role in W&W would’ve been sweeter if Linda took it. Kate wasted it. I roll my eyes when she starts crying or doing her lovely lady impression.

      2. well then ruco should’ve taken ron’s role. serious ron have only 1 or 2 expressions. tvb wake up will ya stop wasting money on people that can’t act…

      3. @ Vivien, haha I totally agree! Kate really can’t do sweet girl roles..she tries too hard and her ‘look’ is to fixed for her er other ‘sultry’ characters. Could not stand her ‘good girl’ expressions which were so fake, I forgot, did she manage to pout in W&W too?

@exoidus – As for Ron, haha I totally agree, watching him act sometimes is cringe-worthy as his expressions are really almost non-existent e.g. calling his girlfriend = same expression, someone called him to inform him someone else died = same expression, asking someone to come off the roof (wanting to commit suicide) = same expression hahaha

His acting is so bad that it really makes me laugh (unintentional on his part) :D, well at least it makes ppl laugh!

      4. I find Kate excels in 2 type of roles i.e. sultry sexy role and tomboy role.

I agree that Kate need improvement in other type of roles.

I think the problem with Kate is she overracts. Yes, even her ‘reading’ can be considered overact. I once mentioned that she can go all out in her acting. When she acts as a tomboy she really acts very manly and tough. When she acts as a fierce wife, she shouts very loudly and always scream on top of her voice. When she acts as innocent girl, her innocent act sometimes can get overboard. So, when she acts as a cool professional or assassin, she goes overboard in her coolness and calmness and become emotionless instead.

I like Kate. So, I really hope she can improve in her acting in other roles as well.

And Kate does have a movie look.

      5. I like Ron, but have to agree that his expressions are limited. Actually he improved a lot from E.U up to now. At least now he has some expressions on face, dun like before where his only expression is… no expression. Maybe that’s why the role Lang Huet in The Four is perfect for him. This role only required him to be cool, stand and look cool, dun need to talk much and be cool. That’s all. Perfect choice for it is Ron – the one who look cool.

It’s quite funny that Ron – without the cameras – can have some good expressions on face. Whenever standing in front of the camera, he becomes wooden. Some of his fans teased that he has camera fear. I think so too.

So, Ron should act the roles like Lang Huet more :P.

As for the actresses, TY has the emotional eyes when crying while Linda has the beautiful crying face. I blv that anyone who can merge TY’s eyes and Linda’s face in one, this one will be a very good cryer.

And for Kate, she has movie face. I agree with Kidd’s comment about her. She really has a fierce look, tat’s why she is kinda unconvincing as a good girl. Same like I can’t buy Ruco Chan as a good guy :P.

      6. @ Fox

She can be good girl, but, not the Linda type sweet innocent good girl. She can be the tomboy good girl. 🙂

      7. @Kidd: I’m referring to the fragile good girl :P.

For the tomboy good girl, still think she is unconvincing as one in Brick of law.

      8. @ Fox

She’s tomboy in ‘Brink of Law’ meh?

        I don’t think so.

      9. Kinda in the beginning, Kidd. She turned to a fragile girl from the middle.

  6. Tavia should focus on growing her stagnant and boring acting skills instead of her nose. Appearance will fade let alone a fake appearance that don’t match her. It’s hard to focus on her acting since her nose has more presence than her self.

  7. I don’t think Travia has done anything to her nose, I have met her in real life couple years ago, and her nose looked just as prominent and pointy. The more popular someone gets in TVB, the more news are made up about them.

  8. I actually really like Tavia and can consider myself a fan. I think what Tavia needs right now is a break and take some time to reflect on her career. I think jumping from one series after another, it does not allow her enough time to withdraw herself from her old character and this does not apply only to her but to all actors. I personally don’t find her boring but I find her roles boring. I like for her to play more fiesty characters like MR rather than goody two shoes like in YSSS. I think she did good in TOT, her attire and her hair cut suits her roles very much. However, it was watching TOT that I noticed something different about her look. I thought that her nose looks a bit too out there. I think with her current weight loss, this does not help this rumor about her nose at all. The skinnier your face is, the more prominent your nose will stand out. As much as I hate to admit it, I do think she did something with her nose. I wish she didn’t because she looked perfectly fine the way she looked. Yes, perhaps, she may not look stunning but she is definitly pretty enough. Lastly, from my personal opinion, I think there are a lot of anti-Tavia here but I don’t care. I read all your opinions and comments and at time it does bother me, but at the end of the day, you are all entitle to your opinion. You can’t expect everyone to share the same opinion, so to all Tavia fans who frequent Jayne’s site, do not take offence, it’s just a discussion.

    1. ” As much as I hate to admit it, I do think she did something with her nose. I wish she didn’t because she looked perfectly fine the way she looked. Yes, perhaps, she may not look stunning but she is definitly pretty enough. “

Agree. She looks perfectly fine before. I always thought she has a beautiful nose.

“I think she did good in TOT, her attire and her hair cut suits her roles very much. “

This, I agree. The first few episodes, I think she’s a bit unnatural (or maybe I’m just not used to seeing her in such a mature role) . But, she’s more into her character now.

    2. I like Tavia as well, better than all the other fadans currently at TVB. She has succeeded due to all her hard work… she did not rely on beauty pageants or publicity stunts. She stays out of the limelight of the press, but still manages to come to the top. I don’t think she is a boring person… she has a lot of friends in the industry who seem to quite enjoy her company.

I also think that her nose is getting a bit too much. I always thought she was a very pretty girl since she first started acting and is unneccesary for her to make any physical changes to her face. I think she looks her best w/ light makeup on. Nowadays, it just looks caked on. I think Linda Chung has a good makeup artist… she always looks very fresh and natural.

    3. Yes…I like Tavia too…I look among the rest of the TVB actresses, she is one of the best. Although she might not be the sweetie pie or the most beautiful girl in TVB, she has the charisma. I think people should just stop focusing whether she did a nose job. It is her acting that is important.

  9. I’m watching TOT now. I really hope Tavia stop taking whatever injection she’s injecting to her nose. It’s very distracting. Her nose really looks like Pinocchio nose in the side profile.

    1. That’s what I’m notice too. Her nose has more screen presence than her acting. It’s indeed distracting.

  10. No wonder currently she look diferent cos her nose seem a bit longer than before and make her look funny,i guess her manager hve to let her know when to stop ….

  11. Recently I watched one of Tavia’s old dramas and some of her features were indeed different. Her nose used to be quite flat & she has droppy eyes. Well, I personally felt both have been modified, I don’t know through plastic surgery or botox, that I don’t know. But, of course she looks much prettier now compare to those days.

  12. Poor Tavia’s nose! Her nose seems to be getting more attention than her..everytime she appears on screen, my mom would tell me to look at her nose haha but all the same, I like watching her in most series except say in the show shot in Hokkaido with Chilam and Myolie and some others like the series with Michael Tse and Steven Ma (something to do with horoscopes) hah!

  13. Poor Tavia, everyone seems to be talking so much about her nose. There are a lot of artist that had plastic surgeries and I feel the obvious one would be Maggie Cheung Man Yuk. Of course she’s pretty & elegant looking now compare to those days.

  14. Her actings have been strongly criticized as well. That I won’t criticize because I know I won’t be able to be an actress myself and honestly to remember the script is going to be too much for me already.

  15. please get it right she was unnatural in TOT because she was sick not because of her nose
