Rape Case Involving Hong Kong Artiste’s Daughter Overturned

Above: Model Janet Ma expressed concern over her daughter Kayla’s clubbing lifestyle after a rape case involving a Hong Kong artiste’s daughter surfaced.

The earlier conviction of wealthy Taiwanese playboy Justin Lee (李宗瑞) for committing serial drug rape shook the entire entertainment industry, as he had been associated with many Taiwanese and Chinese socialites and celebrities over the years. In the wake of the scandal, many reports of similar incidents have been circulating, with a particularly noteworthy rape case involving the daughter of a famous celebrity from Hong Kong. Although the incident took place in 2012, its details recently re-surfaced as the case was appealed in court sometime this year.

According to the alleged account, while on a vacation in Taiwan with some friends, the victim had visited a karaoke bar. As she was about to leave, the owner of a fashion boutique aggressively advanced upon her. The accused subsequently took the victim to his boutique and drugged her drinks, causing her to lose consciousness. He then drove her to a hotel nearby where he committed rape and took photographs of the sexual acts.

In response, the accused asserted that the sexual acts were consensual and he had approached the victim because he found her very attractive. However, the prosecution proceeded with the rape charge on the basis that traces of the accused’s se-men had been found near the victim’s private parts. The accused was eventually convicted and sentenced.

Determined to establish his innocence, the accused appealed against his conviction. At the end of the recently concluded trial, the court overturned the conviction and acquitted the accused. Among the findings made by the court, a forensic report determined that the drug consumed by the alleged victim at the time was amphetamine, which was a stimulant and not a sedative.

Furthermore, the hotel receptionist testified that when she saw the two, they appeared to be sober although they were having an argument. A final piece of evidence was a lucidly written text message that the victim had sent a friend at the time of the alleged incident; she wrote that she would be returning to her hotel late and that she had discovered a device resembling a CCTV camera.

All these facts led to the court’s inference that the alleged victim was fully conscious at the time of the incident, and was not a victim of rape but had consented to the sexual acts.

Celebrity Parents Express Worry

Many celebrity parents who have been following the case expressed anxiety that their daughters would be implicated in similar cases. Hong Kong supermodel Janet Ma (馬詩慧), whose 22-year-old daughter Kayla Wong (王曼喜) is a high-profile socialite, said, “Kayla used to love going dancing in clubs, although she has decreased this habit since being in a relationship. I reminded her to be wary of strangers and watch her drinks, so that she will not end up with her drinks spiked. Also, I don’t even approve of my daughter smoking, let alone use drugs. I will never let her touch drugs!”

  1. What kind of parents let their child smoke but won’t let them touch other kind of drugs? Doesn’t she know smoking can cause you many health problems?

    1. smoking is still not as bad as drugs. I’m sure she knows smoking isn’t healthy but her daughter is an adult so is hard to control your child if they choose to smoke or do drugs.

      1. “Smoking is still not as bad as drugs” – lol… really? Both are addicting and both can have serious impact to your health. They are equally as bad for your health.
I think what you might have meant was that smoking is still more socially acceptable than drugs – very different meaning.

    2. Lol this “child” is 22 years old. How many 22 year olds these days ask for their parents’ permission to do anything??? Well… unless they still behaved like a child lol At 22 years old I would expect the adult to be fully aware of what is right and wrong and are able to make a choice. Whether good or bad.

      1. I would guess rich kids who don’t really need to work that hard because their parents are gonna leave them lots of money enough to be set for life? They gotta stay on their parents’ good side in order to get a good share of their assets and whatnot.

    3. Well Smoking effect the body and drug effect the brain mostly. The brain is the most important organ so I would say drug are worse then smoking. Brain damage is something hard to fix

  2. On another note, I wondered who is the daughter of the hong kong artiste is?

  3. I think the translation is off. Per the article, Janet Ma didn’t say she was fine with her daughter smoking. She said, she can’t even accept her daughter’s smoking habit, let alone her doing drugs.

  4. between smoking and drugs, I guess smoking is less evil…of course both would be considered NO-NO if possible.
smoking is harmful to the body.

  5. Is amphetamine the same drug as on Breaking Bad? Isn’t that a drug that can affect judgment? What is wrong with the Taiwanese court?
