Ron Ng Reduced to Supporting Roles
Although heavily promoted in his early career, Ron Ng (吳卓羲) has been reduced to playing supporting roles in recent years.
In the upcoming Black Heart White Soul <忠奸人>, Ron is in a supporting role opposite Roger Kwok (郭晉安). Overshadowed by Ruco Chan (陳展鵬) in Ruse of Engagement <叛逃>, it is reported that Ron was unhappy with the lack of opportunities. When Ron was demoted to third billing behind Wayne Lai (黎耀祥) and Edwin Siu (蕭正楠) in Trade Wars <商戰>, Ron ultimately dropped out before production began.
An insider disclosed, “In the last two to three years at TVB, Ron has only been playing supporting roles. If he is cast next to stars such as Michael Miu (苗僑偉), Francis Ng (吳鎮宇), or any seniors, Ron doesn’t mind. But he is supporting Edwin in Trade Wars, of course he is upset about that. It’s natural that he didn’t accept!”
Ron ended up filming Lord of Shanghai <梟雄> although he is also surrounded by bigger stars. Due to the phenomenal cast consisting of Anthony Wong (黃秋生), Kent Tong (湯鎮業), and Wayne Lai, as well as the media hype over the series, Ron is willing to take part in the filming although his screen time may be limited.
Poor Public Image
Aside from his acting career being at a standstill, Ron’s public image has been tainted after a series of love scandals and negative rumors. In 2011, Ron’s ex-girlfriend, Viann Zhang (張馨予) uploaded a bed photo of herself onto Ron’s Weibo account, causing their secret relationship to surface in an unexpected manner. Viann continued to fight with Ron’s online fans who did not support the romance, until the couple split in 2012.
In July 2012, Ron’s explicit sex messages with “Miss X” surfaced. Ron’s relationship with the anonymous “Miss X” appeared to be purely sexual, as revealed in the urgent audio and text messages that he sent her.
Shortly after breaking up with Viann, Ron was seen frolicking in a pool with the married Toby Leung (梁靖琪) when the cast went to Hainan to film Triumph in the Skies 2 <衝上雲宵II>. After the scandal broke out, Toby and her husband filed for divorce. Ron’s image as a player was deeply ingrained in the public’s mind, although he denied being the reason behind Toby’s divorce.

I find Edwin Siu not a good supporting actor like Ron. Ron is a very good supporting actor where everything is minimum. Edwin is too OTT for me. He overacts too much.

I’m sorry but he is not qualify to be in a lead role. He’s lucky to be in a supporting role. Can’t even be compare to Roger or Ruco in term of acting.

Poor Ron. But he has no one to blame but himself. His philandering ways have put him in negative light. His acting remains one note. At least thank his lucky stars that he’s still able to be second lead.
If the likes of Kevin Cheng, Kenneth Ma, and Ruco Chan can be lead, then so can Ron. They’re all the same. None can act any better than the other. None has given a breakthrough performance that’s worthy of mention. Anyone who thinks Ron should play supporting roles due to his bad acting obviously has blinders on when watching Kevin, Kenneth, Ruco et al. And anyone who thinks Ron should play supporting roles due to his personal love life is obviously one of those viewers who 1) does not have a life of his/her own, and 2)cannot see that an actor’s love life his is own bloody business.
I do have to partly disagree with you on this. I think Ruco Chan is really a better actor than Ron, Kevin and Kenneth.
Kenneth always have that slightly dumb look on his face, Kevin and Ron’s acting is just too bland. They all have got looks, charm and talent, but just not enough to really stand out and be a lead actor that can carry a whole show.
I’m not a huge fan of Ruco Chan, but I do find him a better actor and more charismatic.
In Ruse of engagement both Ruco and Ron had equally screentime in the beginning, so it did start as two leads. But it soon became clear to most viewers that Ruco was way better than Ron.
@Ron and Ruco start with equal screen time but then Ron screen time got reduce cause they cut some of his screens out and added new ones with Ruco.

Personally I think his acting skills is way better than Kenneth Ma. Probably luck wasn’t on his side. Wish him well though.
Ik I still can’t believe they replace Ron with Kenneth Ma. And they had Raymond Lam in the series and it sucked and was really boring.
Yeah, wished they kept the original cast of Ron and Ray. Ron would do a much better job being comedic and I think Ray did a good job too. Even my mom says he did good cause she learned about that historical person in school and he should be like that. I think the miscast of Kenneth was the reason for low ratings.
I think everyone should agree to this, cause seriously, how do you expect a guy who only has one facial expression to be a good actor. He shouldn’t even be acting unless he makes some changes.

I heard Ron’s acting is not bad,but of course there is always room for improvement. Even the veteran actors constantly strive for improvement so of course is working to improve too. I feel that working with Anthony,Kent and other veterans will definitely help him,Kenneth,Myolie,,etc.. all improve on their acting because will most likely give them pointers and guide them. Of course,they may get yelled too but that is a blessing in disguise.
Obviously, he can’t be versatile actor but thanks to his poster boy looks as young gens admire him so much and he’s still considered by TVB to cast him in grand series despite only supporting role 😀 Ron’s bad image about on and on scandal delivers negative impact to his career automatically…
Honestly, this article is stupid. One article last year said his acting improved a lot, that he is starting to give more opportunities. Please keep in mind ROE was filmed like 3 years ago, when Ron’s acting was stiff and didn’t know how to fix himself, but in TITS 2 his acting was pretty good which was filmed like months right before it was aired. This article is super biased.
I agree and who said that everything we read in the articles are all true? That goes for every article. Ron’s acting has improved a lot and if he continues to improve and get good reviews then he will surely get more opportunities.

ron was billed as a co star/ supporting with wayne each and everyone of ron roles has leading stories to the series.. tvb loves putting ron in the big grand production
Shows that He has a good relationship with producers and probably not a player or else, producers will not cast him in their grand productions.
Ron can lead a drama any day the funny thing is when Ron was 1st lead tvb had high ratings now when Ron supporting tvb has low ratings it funny
i wonder what really happened. i remember in 2004-2006 he was heavily promoted. he was constantly in commercials and lead in dramas. then 2007 he was demoted to secondary/third line actor. in the 2007 drama, can’t recall the name now, it was a big production between china and tvb, he didn’t show up until mid-way through the series and his role is pretty insignificant.

It’s mostly TVB’s fault- they should not have promoted Ron so heavily from the start. He should be given time to learn & mature first. Since he was lead from the start, it’s difficult to accept supporting roles now. But he should also reflect on himself, has he improved so far?
Maybe a little, but that’s a little too late already.
Sometimes, you have to know that you are not capableof the lead role. Either because you really can’t act, you are not as good as others or the audience just don’t like you. It’s reality man, the audience are the determining factor at the end.
