Ruco Chan: How to Be a Winner

Ruco Chan’s (陳展鵬) difficult road to stardom is well-documented. On reflecting the past 20 years of his career, the 37-year-old actor compared his life to drinking strong whiskey, “Sometimes, it takes time to learn how to enjoy a drink. For example, when you first drink whiskey, you would not be used to the taste; but once you begin to taste and savor it, you will learn the joyful feeling that whiskey can give you.”

Ruco debuted at the young age of 17 and was a graduate of TVB’s artiste training class. After a few years of playing small roles, Ruco decided to give up everything in TVB to sign a record contract with PolyGram. He described his years with PolyGram as the darkest times of his life.

“After signing with PolyGram, the financial crisis happened. My career, family, and relationship had all suffered huge setbacks. I was perplexed; did I bite off more than I can chew? Did I join the wrong industry? Was it society’s fault? Or did I lose in my gamble? I had countless of questions in my head, but I couldn’t answer any of them. If I never joined PolyGram, I probably wouldn’t have taken such a huge detour in my career.”

Gambling one’s life requires wisdom and courage. It was Ruco’s choice to target the entertainment industry and as a result, he must learn to face the consequences. In his losing battle, Ruco learned how to pick up the winning pieces.

“When I was at my lowest point, a senior taught me how to face my life ahead. He taught me that a person’s biggest failure is losing to yourself. Even if you had lost the world, as long as you believe that you haven’t lost, you aren’t losing.”

Ruco questioned himself – was he able to take responsibility of the choices he made in his life and the setbacks that came with it? Was the choice he made a wise one? He told himself that as long as he could accept these problems, he would be able to walk forward.

“That’s the scariest thing, to be stuck in a position where you don’t know if you should continue or stop. Time is very valuable. There isn’t much time to waste.”

With his passion for performing, Ruco chose to go forward with his career. It was a road of no regrets. Though it took him many years to get to where he is today, he ultimately became the winner.

  1. The article is a bit too early and should be republished when he wins an award even if it is a fixed award like TVB. That being said, Ruco, don’t get drunk on your success!!

    1. Eh! The link also has same magazine with Chris Lai in it! JAyne, can translate??

      1. Funn,
I’ll look through contents and see if we can fit into publication schedule.

    2. Funn,
Being a winner is not necessarily about acting awards. I think Ruco’s philosophy in life, as eclipsed through interviews, shows that he is already a winner, in not giving up and finding wisdom through experiences. I find his quotes to be inspiring.

      1. Agree. Success to him is probably more of being able to do various challenging roles and getting appreciation from audiences worldwide vs geeting an award as he has mentioned numerous times.

      2. Agree with Jayne and Elayne. Ruco is a winner for he did not give up in the face of adversity. Winning does not just mean getting awards, it’s being able to pick up after a fall and facing challenges and obstacles head-on instead of running away from them. Ruco is already a winner many times over in my eyes.

    1. Yes, totally agree. He is the best actor in TVB and he deserves the recognition

  2. Poor guy really had a rough career in showbiz, making a huge detour before coming back to TVB. Thank goodness for the foresight of Catherine Tsang who signed him back and Amy Wong who’s like his “Bo Le”. His fighting spirit also won the admiration of the Lotus executive who decided to sign him on after reading about his early struggles and how he perservered through them. He’s one hard working tough guy. Wish him more and more success !

  3. Luck play an important part in an artist’s success. Hope good fortune is with him from now on.

  4. Jayne,

Thanks for another GREAT shot of Ruco. haha…Happy Friday!! 🙂

  5. Agree with Jayne and Elayne. Ruco is a winner for he did not give up in the face of adversity. 6. Ruco is gifted with voice, looks and talents, topped with good audience fate. Winning hearts of the audience is better than awards. Of course, it’s best to have both.

  7. Ruco is a great actor w/o winning any tvb awards…Ooolala

  8. Just saw a photo of him with a trophy from the Lotus Cup Asia 2014. Congrats, Ruco. He is really multi-talented in acting, singing, sports . Now, car-racing. Ruco, you are the best!!!

    1. Thumbs up to Ruco !! One more feather in his cap!! So proud of him!!

    2. Congrats to Ruco for winning best novice driver at Lotus Cup. Ahhh, It’s so nice to have the trophy in hand other than waiting for tbb’s.

  9. Few things I must say about Ruco. It could be the hardship that he went through that made him a very humble actor. I have not had the opportunity to watch him but I’ve a feeling that he should be able to act, not those that really relies on his good looks.

I wonder if TVB were not losing their other talents, would Ruco Chan had a chance to prove himself that he could act? It was sad that not all the actor/actress that can act were given equal opportunity, it’s like everywhere it’s more than your talents, it’s about connections, it’s about apple polishing.

I’m really glad that after all the hardships he had to go through, he finally is able to show his acting talent, hope he’ll be recognised soon.

    1. You should watch him act. He is really very good. His fans love him for his strength of character and his humility. It doesn’t really matter if he is good looking or not.

      1. Yes, Coco. You are absolutely right. We all see a totally new Ruco in every single of his series. I rather wait for Ruco’s series or watch talent actors such as Wayne Lai,Roger Kwok than watch other good looking TVB actors act.

  10. Yes, everyone knows that tbb’s (acting and singing prizes) are fixed beforehand, so never be serious to those awards, I only just treat it as a game/show/bargain. In any event, I support Ruco, the most talented actor in TVB I have ever come across who can also sing well and enthusiastic in show business and sporty and….
