Ruco Chan Needs a New Shelf for His Trophies

The Yahoo! Asia Buzz Awards 2015 were held on Thursday, December 10. These awards recognizes the most popular artists and entertainment productions based on Yahoo Hong Kong’s search results. Ruco Chan (陳展鵬), who won Favorite TVB Actor in Singapore and Malaysia for his performance in this year’s TVB anniversary drama Captain of Destiny <張保仔>, is one of the most-searched television artists in Hong Kong this year.

After receiving his Yahoo’s Television Male Artist of the Year award, Ruco was asked if he now had more confidence to win TV King in the upcoming TVB Anniversary Awards. He said, “Not really, but this year has been a year of great harvest. Many unthinkable things have happened.” He then added jokingly, “I think I need to buy a new shelf for these trophies.”

Reporters suggested that Ruco should buy another house to store his trophies. He responded, “I’ve always wanted to buy a new house, but I need to do more research.”

Ruco will be competing for TVB’s Best Actor award with Anthony Wong (黃秋生), Wayne Lai (黎耀祥), and Bobby Au Yeung (歐陽震華), among others. Does Ruco have the confidence to snatch the award from hot favorite, Anthony Wong?

“He’s a god!” exclaimed Ruco. “It’s a honor to be nominated with him. I already consider that as winning. I’ve collaborated with him in a few movies when I first debuted. Unfortunately, I couldn’t take part in Lord of Shanghai <梟雄>. It would have been perfect for me. I would be able to learn more from him.”

  1. “He’s a god! It’s an honor to be nominated with him. I already consider that as winning.”

    I love his response!

  2. Just wondering why amy wong did not invite Ruco to join the LOS series. Heard some rumours that they have fallen out wirh each other and she no longer favours him. That is also the reason he was given only a cameo appearance in BK2. Just hope the news is not true.

  3. Congrats to Ruco Chan!
Ruco Chan is the clear winner of the TVB TV King on Facebook Poll with 8,300+ votes…Bravo! but imagine ailing Anthony Wong with only 450 votes is selected by TVB to be the TV King….Boo boo!

    1. @freedalas TV king award is based on the nominated drama by actors on that particular year. Not that if you work hard for many years means that you’re well deserve to get it. Ruco acting compare with Anthony wong, Wayne lai and Bobby is still a long way to go. Those facebook polls are mainly for the teenagers. Few thousand votes does not represent the whole population of HK. Let the professional judger to judge since they are the professional. Audience sometimes just vote for the sake of voting. thats why 50% audience 50% professional judger to balance it and avoid BS.

      2. @freedalas Effort is effort, Anthony also slaved away in the movie industry to get to where he is today. Instead of thinking in terms of TV industry or movie industry, etc it should be inclusive as in the whole acting industry and thereby whoever can showcase the best acting within that media of that particular year deserves the reward. In this case, it was just obvious that Anthony would win out because there was quite some distance between even him and Wayne Lai performance-wise.

The other factor you mentioned is the passage of time so unless TVB starts banning people with umpteenth years from winning then the award naturally gravitates towards those with age unless the individual is such a talented prodigy in acting. If we eliminate movie kings from winning and then all the awards start polarizing towards another group of TVB veterans or movie veterans who film with TVB should we start banning them from winning awards as well? After that we start banning the people in their 40s form winning because it would be unfair to the 30s and 20s? What about two nominations in their 30s but one was a child actor giving them an extra 10-15 years of slaving away? More deserving?

Nobody has time for a viable situation like best actor in the age category of 20-30, 30-40, etc. Award ceremonies would be stretched to unbelievably long hours.

I get where you’re coming from though but not realistic when the other solution would look like a PR nightmare. If for some reason Ruco wins best actor for movies 20 years from now, I wouldn’t say just because he filmed one movie that year it would be unfair to the 40-year old actor who worked in movies his entire career. It would be based on who had the better performance to win as the award should be largely based on that merit alone.

  5. Brilliant response. To be nominated among the best is already an honour for him. I like that.

  6. veterans should learn when to give way and let the young shine since they have already acquired skills and recognition. these young and hardworking artistes deserve to be recognized after putting in hard work over the years.
