Ruco Chan’s Driving License Suspended for Speeding Violation

In a rush to get to work this August, Ruco Chan (陳展鵬) was caught speeding in Tseung Kwan O and was photographed by hidden street cameras. The road’s speed limit was 30 miles per hour, but Ruco was caught driving at 60 miles per hour that night.

At the court hearing today, Ruco’s lawyer represented his case and the 37-year-old star was eventually fined a total of $1500 HKD. The judge also suspended Ruco’s driving license for  six months, although he does not have any previous traffic convictions.

Admitting that he was wrong in the speeding incident, Ruco said he had considered hiring a chauffeur so he can commute to work quickly and adhere to his busy schedule. However, wanting to save money, Ruco decided against it and ultimately decided to find another method of transportation.

Feeling regretful, Ruco explained, “I’ve been on this road for years now and I go on it every day. I’ve never been caught on camera before. Because I had to rush to work that night, this happened. I will remember that there’s a speeding camera here from now on.”

In related news, Ruco surprisingly has a lighter work load in 2015 and will only be filming Captain of Destiny <張保仔>.  Ruco said, “That’s even better! That way, I can have more time to rest. In the last half a year, I filmed a total of five dramas. It was very hard work.”

  1. Poor Ruco! Everyones speed and get tickets at some point so no big deal.

    1. Depending on how many miles over the limit – 30 miles/hr over the speed limit is kind of big deal. Police in my areas does not care about less than 5 miles over, they may fine or give verbal warning at 5-15 but 15 miles+ – it starts to get very serious.

  2. The 6 months’ suspension is too stiff. Compared to Nic’s brushes for speeding offences, Ruco’s an angel!

  3. It is double the speed limit. Ruco no excuse. Safety first and safety of others as well. I don’t pity him even if first offender. It takes only one time to get someone hurt. And usually he is savvy with answers but this time he got it wrong. Instead of remembering speed traps try to stay within speed limits or go earlier to change or change appointment to later. Luckily not drunk driving. Learn from Christopher lee. One drunken night and in search of some curry landed him in prison with a criminal record. Bad Rico bad!!

    1. People forget and move on. Look at Nicholas Tse. Ruco’s case is small potato. He deserves punishment but this seems very harsh especially for first time offender.

    2. The punishment is too harsh. Ruco’s case is nothing like Nicholas Tse’s case of hitting people and Michael Tse’s case of drunk driving.

    3. 30 miles per hour is for turtles. Which modern car only move at 30 miles @ 50 km an hour??? What kind of road is this, a single lane dirt road? For goodness sake, be reasonable, transport officials.

On the highway, 60 miles, 100km is the norm.

      1. Speed limits are designed by professionals. There is always a valid reason for it. People can speed up a bit by a few miles, but surely not double the speed.

      2. 30 miles per hour is definitely not driving on the highway, my dear. It should be in the city. How fast is the speed limit in the city that you live?

      3. Once in kl where speed limit is believe it or not 60 km per hour. Police stopped me for going over and I pleaded mu case that it is not that fast and he retorted true but still over the limit. Point is don’t go over. Doesn’t matter turtle tortoise or cheetah speed. You can drive a Porsche but if sign says 30 well don’t go over it and if you must not double the mx.

    4. Lol, there is nothing harsh about this penalty. How can you compare someone else’s wrong with another ? It’s speeding. He is lucky he got caught and fined this time, what happens if he sped and hit someone ? It’s a mistake that has a chance to become someone else’s nightmare or to their death bed, including his own. At least now he will have this incident as a learning lesson. Yes people speed all the time, but that doesn’t mean people should brush it off like it’s an ordinary common mistake that is ok to make when comparing it to other peoples that appear more severe.

I’m a fan of Ruco so I ain’t no being bias here, I’m glad he got fined and have this as a lesson being named and shamed through media. I’d rather this than have his name on front page reporting his death from an accident or caused someone else to get injured.

      1. Well no one’s saying he shouldn’t be punished. Just saying that the sentence should be proportionate to the severity of the offence and considering other mitigating factors like this being his first since getting his license when he was 18.

  4. HK stars must be cursing these Traffic Laws – they can’t use their expensive machines to the max. must be frustrating to garage them all the time/

    muahaha

    1. Traffic is super busy in Hong Kong with lots of people and lots of cars. Hong Kong is a very small city (in area) with 7+ million people. It is very much unlike the small cities in the States or Canada. It can be busier than the downtown core of New York City.

  5. Poor Ruco. He can’t drive for half year and has to attend and pass that stupid “Mandatory Driving Improvement Course” before he can get his licence/permission to drive again. I sympathies him. 50 km is the speed of a tortoise even for me as a woman. I always drive at overspeed on the road that I am familiar with and would just let it go coz it is irritating that I would have to watch the speed meter from time to time and to slow down intentionally, unless of course, I know there is a speed trap. Those taxi drivers and mini-bus drivers drive at a high speed at non-peak hours (yes, sometimes more than double speed. If you have a chance to take a taxi or mini-bus overnight, you will know that), but of course they know where those camera or movable speed trays are located, they will tell each other. So if you drive at the speed limit (tortoise speed), you will be “bee” by other drivers that make you feel very uncomfortable. It’s more dangerous to the road users for the Traffic Official to set those unreasonable slow speed limits.

I am not going to say words for Ruco. I love him and also don’t want him or others to be hurt. But certain speed limits set by our “able” Traffic Official are not reasonable and they should consider setting two speed limits for peak / non-peak hours.

  6. O dear, Ruco has already started filming for Captain of Destiny and has no more commitment for 2015.Does it mean he has been put on cold storage like Priscilla. Thought with a new manager he would have more job offers.

    1. Cocochan,
Ruco’s professionalism has only earned praise from producers he has worked with, including Amy Wong, Leung Choi Yuen, and Law Wing Yin. I’m sure after Captain of Destiny, Ruco will be cast in another drama. Although his star power is not enough to guarantee ratings (even the most seasoned veteran such as Wayne Lai can’t do so these days), Ruco’s position at TVB is secure. I think TVB producers are trying to invite back older stars from the 90s to lead to attract greater viewer interest.

  7. Close to 100kmph. On the narrow streets of HK at night. He deserves the punishment.

  8. Seems like everyone is missing the point. Speeding would not have happened if he managed his time wisely. He mentioned that he was late thus he was speeding. If he set his smartphone or watch to give him time reminders, this article would not have happened.

  9. I don’t see anything wrong with his punishment. It sounds just right. He didn’t just speed. He went over 30 mph, which is A LOT. And why was he speeding? Because he was running late, which is a common cause for many accidents. I’m sure it was a lesson learned.

  10. “I’ve never been caught on camera before…I will remember that there is a camera here from now on.”

Lol which means he’s saying it’s def not his first time speeding and he won’t speed at that same road but on others without a camera.

Seems like lesson is not learned.

    1. Oops! But face it, lots of people speed some of the time esp when they think no cops or cameras are around to catch them. He’s human like everyone else. But i hope he learns his lesson too.

  11. oooh that’s terrible! I wish i could apply to be his driver, heheh. FOC of cos!
