Samantha Ko: “Besides My Body, I Can Also Act”

In All That Is Bitter Is Sweet <大藥坊>, Samantha Ko (高海寧) portrays Pin Pin, a dance hostess whose love for Ruco Chan’s (陳展鵬) Ting Yat Yuen remains unrequited. Samantha said she admires Pin Pin’s courageous attitude towards love, but in real life, she takes a much more realistic approach.

“I like things to stay simple. I’m afraid of complicated relationships, and I’ve never confessed to a man before.”

Samantha revealed that when she was still in school, she had a crush on a male classmate for three years. Despite knowing that he had a girlfriend, Samantha still liked him. However, she never had enough courage to confess to him. “I was conservative. I wanted him to speak up first.” Samantha believes that it is best to be friends first before proceeding to the next stage in a relationship.

With her career in full-bloom, Samantha must grasp all the opportunities handed to her, leaving little time to think about romance. “In the past, I wanted to do everything, but I wasn’t given the chance to. I could only think about it [in my mind]. Now [TVB] is giving me many opportunities, and my roles have room for good development. I want to let everyone know that besides my body and looks, I can also act.”

Samantha said she wants to portray a strong and hearty role, contrary from the feminine roles she is usually known for.

Working with Film Giants

Currently shooting the film, From Vegas to Macau 2 <賭城風雲2> , Samantha has earned the opportunity to act with Chow Yun Fat (周潤發). Samantha praised, “Fat Gor is really beyond our level. He can recite several pages of dialogue and not miss a word. And he doesn’t need cheat sheets. It’s really amazing.”

Samantha said she is very happy for the chance to work with the film’s producer, Andrew Lau (劉偉強). “I really like his film, A Beautiful Life <不再讓你孤單>. As a man, he understands women very well, and that touches me. He is also very patient and advises me well. He’s not as fierce as what others make him seem.”

  1. She’s in everything! I like her, but not every role is for her.

    1. i know! TVB should give her better roles and maybe make her into a fadan! she’s awesome! she can be cute, innocent, or mean and crazy. i see her having the ability to play all types of role!

      1. She plays the innocent type good. When i’m stroking it in front of her, she begs for it. would put it between her balloons.

    2. I agreed! She was good as a young lawyer in FF and the ditzy model in My Lady, but not so much as the powerful woman in LW. I can’t help but think that she’s someone mistress instead. The role where she has fallen for the evil big boss kind of thing.

    3. I like her too! I find her natural and love her bubbly personality! 😉

    1. Agree! I always preferred all the OTHER contestants and disliked Edelweiss the most but she ended up winning.

      1. If there is turn back time. Miss Hong Kong 2008 should be Samantha Ko.

    2. Me too. Facially I prefer her over Edelweiss too.

No idea how she won that night.

  2. I’m afraid she doesn’t have the girl-next-door-innocent-oh-so-pure look that TVB (and arguably, HK viewers) prefers in a female actress. 9 out of 10 times, TVB will cast her as a prostitute or strip dancer or mistress or something worse. But who knows, maybe she’ll get lucky. Maybe TVB will stop being so stupid and superficial and start casting actors/actresses who can act.

    1. And the 1 time she was cast as a young lawyer was her most memorable role and whilst she was raw in Last Steep Ascent, she was one of the highlights together with Joel Chan.

  3. I think she’s quite a good actress, haven’t watched the other current series and her screen time is very limited in Line Walker to judge but her role in FF and BL was good.

Besides she seems pretty likeable, I don’t remember much criticism towards her. I think ppl recognize her acting abilities rather than her looks though.

  4. TBH, the first time i saw her in Daddy Good Deeds, I thought she was a guy! Tranny sort of.

  5. She isn’t an amazing actress, but she isn’t the trash that some of the promoted new actresses are. She has potential for a good supporting role, but I don’t think she has the charisma and screen presence for the lead role. Her acting in Line Walker is not bad, but limited to her character, definitely. She was much better in her previous lawyer role.

    1. Agreed , she isnt a great actress like Chairmaine or Myloie , she is a bit stiff at Line Walker, the character of a big boss lady do not suits her

  6. Curvaceous? Lol she has a figure of a stick. Her acting is mediocre at best but I like her attitude.

      1. Lol babe I dont know what entertainment industry youre talking about but she does not have a curvaceous figure. Pretty girl though.

    1. Agree with Tess. She’s considered “curvy” in hk ’cause asian’s are so freaken tiny and skinny. But she actually has boobs and somewhat of a butt lol. She’s a lot curvier than most female actress in hk, Aimee Chan, Grace, Linda, Myolie etc. In the states she’s considered average/normal though.

      1. @omg really? never really noticed. i just thought she was skinny lol

  7. Yes she’s a got a wicked body. Face is not DDG but quite pretty. Shouldn’t that be working for her to get roles so she can show off her acting chops? I agree with a previous poster, she is actually a decent actress. Even in those cooking shows, she’s quite entertaining. From an acting standpoint, she would not any worse than a Linda Chung or Priscilla Wong or one of those new girls that TVB is trying to promote right now.

  8. @”I want to let everyone know that besides my body and looks, I can also act.”

Whether she can act or not is not for her to say, it’s for the audience to judge.

  9. She sort of looks like Mainland actress Hu Jing. I enjoy her acting too. I thought she and Joel were hilarious in the last steep ascend.

  10. When you have a face that resembles an owl, your acting roles are going to be limited no matter of acting skills. Who gives a hoot?

  11. Samantha Ko isn’t very pretty, but she has a nice body (curvy). She is tall too. She does not have the look to be a fadan in TVB. However, her acting skills have improved a lot in the last 3 years.

  12. WAIT…. you mean she HAS a body?!?!?! Wow… I’m speechless, really! And she is so fake, another hypocrite on the horizon… well what’s new in TVB these days?

    1. Samantha Ko is considered to be curvy in Hong Kong, especially among TVB actresses.

  13. For a fairly new actress, she is great. But definitely has room for improvement. TVB needs to treasure talent, not just faces or favorites like Eliza Sum. That woman can not act at all

  14. what does she mean by besides her body and face, she can also act? everyone has a body and a face, she thinks too highly of herself, i don’t see her as a beauty
