Sammy Sum Ends TVB Contract

Although possessing a handsome face, 33-year-old Sammy Sum‘s (沈震軒) road to stardom took over a decade of hard work. Although gaining recognition in recent TVB dramas, Sammy decided not to renew his contract with the station.

Sammy took his first steps into the industry after taking part in TVB’s talent contest ten years ago. He shortly joined TVB’s acting class in 2007, and took small bystander roles afterward. Unfortunately, Sammy’s handsome looks did not help him in his early career. Sammy finally landed his breakthrough role as a gay triad member in 2011’s Lives of Omission <潛行狙擊>.

Although Sammy gained some recognition, he continued to play minor roles in TVB dramas over the next three years. In 2014, Sammy replaced Sammy Leung (森美), who withdrew from Line Walker <使徒行者>, due to health issues. Although breaking his arm during filming, Sammy’s hard work paid off and he won the My Favorite TVB Promising Actor Award at the 2014 TVB Star Awards Malaysia.

Riding on the success of Line Walker, Sammy was finally offered a lead role in romance series, Young Charioteers <衝線>.

To Broaden Horizons

While Sammy’s career at TVB started off fairly slow, he continued to star in a variety of popular movies, including Lan Kwai Fong 2 <喜愛夜蒲2>, Young and Dangerous: Reloaded <古惑仔之江湖新秩序>, and From Vegas to Macau <賭場風雲>.

Due to Sammy’s successful film ventures, TVB had started contract negotiations with him two years ago. However, Sammy’s response made it evident that he was interested in furthering his opportunities elsewhere. This resulted in Sammy being “frozen” by TVB, as he was not cast in any dramas for one year.

With his TVB contract now officially over, Sammy has started working in Mainland China. While his future is not yet clear, Sammy seems happy to try new opportunities.

  1. Sammy Sum has good screen presence and seems to be well liked by film directors. Due to his obvious disinterest in renewing with TVB, he wasn’t given any prominent roles. Wish him greater success in the film industry.

  2. It’s a pity. Sammy is one of the most promising actors in TVB with some very memorable roles and great performances. Hopefully one day he will return to film for TVB again on a drama by drama basis. But we all want to see him succeed outside TVB and wish him the very best.

  3. Great pity. He’s got the looks, the charisma but acting needs some polishing. Maybe the world out there will make him a better actor.

  4. The guy has talent in acting, and he could’ve been one of the popular actors like Bosco, Raymond, the usual lot.. but he was so under used and had little exposure, if I was him, I would leave too! TVB are clearly not giving him enough opportunities, when he was finally ‘recognised’ he had to share his lead role with Him Law in Young Charioteers.

  5. he may act well but i don’t like seeing him on screen. i always thought he looked like a pervert esp after watching lan gwei fong

    1. @m0m0 yup he looks like one to me too. The lower part of his face is ugly, reminds me of an ape. As for his acting i find it nothing impressive. He’s probably better as a singer cos he sings ok.

  6. I actually find him to be decent looking and good to know he’s trying out mainland if he gets offers there. I mean look at how a lot of HK actors went there and gets pay double or triple? When you are still young, of course you should take your chances. Why settle in cheap TVB and never gets a chance to be a lead???

    1. @wworth i am waiting to see if Ruco Chan will be given TV king this year. Last year, he was denied the award. tvb doesn’t know how to appreciate their artistes…so it’s only natural they will leave.

  7. Good on him. TVB’s a sinking ship. I think he’s got a good future in films. Maybe come back once a leap year if they offer him good meaty roles.
