Shaw Brothers Announces Big Plans for Upcoming Years

Nearly one hundred Hong Kong artists and film producers attended a press conference for Shaw Brothers Holdings yesterday, announcing Li Ruigang (黎瑞剛) as the new chairman for the Hong Kong film studio.

The Chinese media mogul, also a non-executive director for TVB, stated his hopes of restoring Shaw Brothers to its former glory by investing more in blockbusters and making films based on original TVB intellectual property.

At the press conference, Shaw Brothers broadcasted a short clip introducing the studio’s upcoming projects, including Louis Koo (古天樂) and Francis Ng’s (吳鎮宇) Dad with Peeling Skin <脫皮爸爸>, Huang Xiaoming’s (黃曉明) City Hunter <城市獵人>, Redemption <救贖危情> directed by Andrew Lau (劉偉強), a new movie starring newlyweds Stephen Fung (馮德倫) and Shu Qi (舒淇), the 4K-3D animation Legend of the Condor Heroes <射鵰英雄傳>, a new Line Walker <使徒行者> film, and many more. Shaw Brothers also plan to establish partnership with Hollywood studios.

Eric Tsang (曾志偉) and Wong Cho-lam’s (王祖藍) creative agency, a subsidiary of Shaw Brothers, will be producing various game shows and comedy films, as well as the web drama He Doesn’t Like Heroes <他不喜歡英雄>. Shaw Brothers will be adapting the 1996 TVB drama, Money Just Can’t Buy <天降財神>, to film. The drama originally starred Bobby Au-yeung (歐陽震華), Roger Kwok (郭晉安), Mariane Chan (陳妙英), and Hilary Tsui (徐濠縈).

An upcoming 30-episode web drama about Hong Kong’s Special Duties Unit will start filming next summer. The drama will star Michael Miu (苗僑偉), Michael Wong (王敏德), Joe Ma (馬德鐘), Bosco Wong (黃宗澤), and Ron Ng (吳卓羲), as members of SDU.

“There’s a distinctive style to Hong Kong crime films that you can’t find anywhere else in the world,” said Bosco. “I’ve played CIDs, WPUs, and K-9 trainers before, but never an SDU. I’m looking forward to it.”

Similar to TVB’s Tiger Cubs <飛虎>, will Bosco have the opportunity to show off his muscles? He laughed and said, “I’ve always been training, but I haven’t read the script yet. We’ll be going overseas for some filming.” (Are web dramas meant for a Mainland audience?) “I don’t know!”

  1. I’m looking forward to the web drama with good lineup of actors who are all fit to play SDU members.

Now i wonder who will be female leads in this drama…hopefully equally good as the male leads.

  2. It’s really pointless in trying to recapture the past glories of Shaw Brothers. It’s bound to fail. It’s bygone era of the the 50s to the 70s with the best mix of actors/actresses, directors, producers and viewers preference/expectations at that time. You cannot recreate that. Those wonderful memories should be left untarnished for people to cherish.

  3. Very exciting times for Shaw Brothers! I hope they can finally restore to its former glory with great new movies and reality tv shows! The new SDU movie sounds really good, great line up of actors!! They should really bring back more great actors, much needed ! Those newbies are a waste of time.

  4. For one, making films based on old TVB dramas is certainly not a way to restore the glory days of the film studio. LOL!!
