Sonija Kwok is Content With Life

Regardless of her slight flu, tranquil beauty Sonija Kwok (郭羨妮) exudes an aura of elegance that immediately puts one at ease when talking to her.

In The Day of Days <初五啟市錄> which has taken over the slot from Friendly Fire <法網追擊>, viewers get to see a dignified Sonija who plays a rich lady of Xiguan. This is a role which Sonija eased into smoothly. Although the 38-year-old’s youth may have passed, Sonija has everything she ever wants in life – a doting husband and a lovely daughter. “It is best to have a common life,” Sonija said.

Born in Hong Kong, Sonija migrated to Vancouver with her family and graduated from the Simon Fraser University with a Bachelor of Psychology.  Although she could easily command a high salary working as a professional, she to work with Cathay Pacific as a flight attendant and upon landing her feet in Hong Kong, relished it so much that she moved to Hong Kong.

TV Queen Eluded Her

Not only does Sonija well educated, she is acknowledged as a ravishing beauty. With her svelte figure and classic good looks, she easily secured the Miss Hong Kong crown in 1999 and a year later, the Miss Chinese International title in Las Vegas. Thus, she began her 14-year career at TVB.

Despite having a glorious beginning, the road to fame was not an easy one for Sonija. Comparably, 1999 Miss Hong Kong second runner-up Myolie Wu (胡杏兒) was given many acting opportunities, and in no time, was already a leading lady. With the many roles given to her, Myolie also clinched the TV Queen in 2011. Sonija had also wondered whether she would win the top honors at one point. Reflecting on her past roles, Sonija said, “When I looked back at my previous works, I was stunned to silence! My acting was so stiff and horrible; it would be a miracle if the company awarded me with the TV Queen award!”

For the majority of her career, Sonija has been plagued by negative romantic rumors. Sonija said resignedly, “I used to retaliate strongly against the scandals but now, after so many years in the industry, I’m used to it already. Just let it be. After all, I have my priorities. Now that I’m a wife and mother, these are more important to me.”

Sonija settled down with mainland action choreographer, Zhu Shaojie (朱少杰) who is neither a famous actor nor an heir to an empire. In actual fact, Shaojie had also worked on 2001’s A Step Into the Past <尋秦記>, but Sonija did not remember Shaojie and get to know him until 9 years later, when he served as an action choreographer on the set of a 2010 mainland drama. Perhaps it was the beginning of her career and the young Sonija had too much on her plate to think about settling down in a stable relationship. Or perhaps it was Zhu Shaojie’s good fortune to meet Sonija again, at the right time of her life.

Half a year into their dating relationship, Sonija accepted Shaojie’s marriage proposal.  Last year, their daughter, Kylie, was born. Sonija revealed, “If we have met earlier, we may not have gotten together. It’s fate.”

  1. What was the story with Sonjia and Michael Tao? Michael hate Sonjia for some reason.

    1. I don’t really remember the details but I don’t think Micheal hates Sonjia anymore. He even congradulated her and everything since the past is the past…

I think it is fate with Sonjia and Shaojie. There are many that we know earlier in life that are not that significant to us, but when we meet them later on in life, they immediately become really important to us. Timing is so important.

      1. Not really. I read it when Sonija was pregnant, Michael congratulated her in a harsh manner to public. He obviously still has grudge for her.

I remember reading something like she was the 3rd party in Michael’s marriage & Michael had sacrificed his wife & marriage to be with Sonija but in the end, Sonija had distanced from Michael due to public pressure.

Anyway, there’s no right or wrong in love. It is how you perceive it. To begin with, Michael was already at fault to have marital affair!

      2. Actually, none of us know the whole or true story so we should not say that Micheal still holds a grudge towards Sonjia. I remember that it was a misunderstanding at first and Micheal cleared it up right away and said that he did congratulate her in a positive manner and had no negative intentions. He was upset that the media would insult his character… But anyways, the past is the past so just let it all pass…

    2. Thank you Lynn.

Oh that’s was the drama between them too. Wow Michael was gonna leave his wife for Sonjia. That’s why he was mad cuz she back out. I guess Sonjia didn’t really like Michael that much to stick around.

  2. Sonija has grown on me so much in the past years. Wishing her the best.

    1. I have to agree….I use to hate watching her and her funny lips when she talks. Well, I lips still get to me sometimes. But she has gown on mee too through the years.

Not every actress/people in the entertainment industry is as lucky in love and family. She seems to have found a balance in both. Best Wishes!

  3. I never thought her exuding elegance or aura of dignity. Not a criticism about her but some people has this classiness, never seen that in her. Her acting has improved tremendously, still strange lips and all but at least nowadays more bearable.

As to why TV Queen eluded her, well she was hardly under TVB’s radar for fadan (in part the rumours didn’t help) and frankly she does not have the capabilities, fan base nor the great role to win any award, more so TV queen.

  4. Bachelor of Psychology could NOT easily command a high salary unless she continue her study. With that degree most end up working in the customer service sector.

    1. A bachelor in psychology then would have landed her a decent job…but because of the influx of students pursuing an education in all fields really messed up the economic flow. Some jobs faced diminishing salaries…others are ridiculously raised exponentially…aka pharmacy.

      1. Actually, there’s a surplus of pharmacists with so many pharmacy schools opening each year. New schools also lower their standards, which makes it easier for students to get in nowadays. There are many new graduates still floating around and waiting for hours.

      2. Yes, many pharmacy schools are opening each year, they may have lowered their standards but the competition is still sky high especially amongst asian students. Even when some pharmacy schools only require a GPA of 3.0-3.3… students are not getting accepted because the pool of applicants are generally within the range of 3.7-4.0 So really, the standards can be anything but chances of getting into pharm school, or any medical field as a matter of fact, depends on who you’re competing against.

Also, new graduates are floating around waiting to land jobs, but when they do land… the salary is almost double than it was barely a decade ago. I remember the days where a pharmacist only needed a bachelors and they made 70-80k easily. Now, they sit through the pre-med track…school over and over for 6 years just to do the same. I’m only talking about pharmacists who stands behind the counter counting pills… for those who goes beyond and actually make the pills… I applaud their hard work. The others… well it all started with the asians particularly the Chinese, “Become a pharmacist, you make a lot of money…” Next thing you know… every Chinese wants to become a pharmacist.

      3. Shame,

You must be from the states. LOL. Because this is exactly the case here.

      4. Competition is high in any health fields. Obviously, the adcoms would pick the top students out of the pool. But, with the recent trend in pharmacy, you don’t need amazing scores to get in. Many schools accept students with a 3.0 and 70 PCAT score. That’s pretty average.

A pharmacist degree was changed to Pharm D. Not sure what it was before, but a doctorate degree means a higher pay. Yeah, pharmacists make good money nowadays, but with a surplus of them, the future may not be so great.

      5. I live in NY, I have not met a single person with those grades who got accepted into pharm school. It could be different in less populated areas.

Also I def agree that the future does not look bright for the pharmacy field with this continuous influx.

      6. We used to have one Pharmacy School in Ontario, Canada. Pharmacy graduates used to get well-paid jobs without much difficulty. However, we had an additional university offering Pharmacy degrees in 2009, and their students should have graduated by now. I heard it is pretty hard for Pharmacy graduates to get jobs now unless they are willing to relocate to work in rural areas.

However, it is not easy to get into a Pharmacy School in Ontario. A student should at least have finished Year 1, 2, 3 or B.Sc. and have a decent GPA, plus good marks in PCat.

Life is getting tougher and tougher for our new generations.

      7. Yea, with Psychology, you need at least a masters if you want to do anything… I had a former friend that only has a bachelor in Psychology and now has no career or anything.

      8. If you want to be a registered psychologist, you need to have a Ph.D. You can then do clinical work, but you need to spend around 7 years in university to get a Ph.D. in Psychology.

      9. Hey shame:

U sound kind of bitter. It’s supply and demand. It’s not the pharmacists’ fault that the nation is rapidly aging and ppl are taking so many medications for their various conditions. And it’s not the Asian ppl’s fault that they excel in the health and science field.

Anyway since you’re f/ NY, isn’t there a pharmacy school in Long Island that was relatively easy to get into?

      10. Josie,

I am sorry if I come off as bitter but im only stating the situation as it is. There are too many students coming into college not knowing what to do and start off listening to what their parents want them to do…it isnt just pharmacy, it goes for any field. And I am of chinese descent myself and I happen to be in the medical field…and I know well just because someone excels at a certain subject does not out right mean that he or she is suited for the job. Ive seen my peers who have 4.0 in their sciences and end up running away from the med field because they dont have the passion for it and absolutely loathe the job environment…thus theyre miserable.

Um I do not know what university you are speaking of because like I said earlier regardless of how low the standards may seem…everything depends on who youre competing against upon applying. So in reality, people here arent even guaranteed a spot even if they have a GPA of 3.7 or higher. But like I said…im in a state where it is extremely over crowded, so competition is greater basically against in state, out of state and international students.

  5. I’ve always liked her acting and her beauty. glad that she’s truly happy now.

  6. Lol I remember how much I hated her as Princess Chiu Yan. I think she’s a decent actress, I wish to see her as a villain again

    1. Yes, I liked her as the beautiful villain in “where the legend begins”, “perish in the name of love”, and “lethal weapons of love and power”:

  7. I like her…she is pretty and have high education…I thought she would have high achievement or marry someone rich…but money and famous is not everything…good to know she is happy…and hope she continues has happy family 🙂

    1. Sonija may not be a great actress but her stunning beauty is something nobody can ever deny! Happy for her contented life 🙂

  8. Sonija, we love you.

Glad you broke off with that Deric Wan, he is not worth your attention at all.

  9. So happy for her 🙂
She’s one of my favourite actresses as well =D

  10. i respect her for marrying out of love, not because of money like most actresses nowadays. And she is beautiful.

  11. Glad she is happy, the press have always given her a bad time.

  12. She was the second most beautiful MISS HK next to Michelle Reis. Sad how her previous relationships ruined her career.

  13. She is one out of only a couple female actresses at TVB that I can stand watching. the rest are like nails on a chalkboard to me.
They don’t seem to use her too much and I have only seen a few shows with her in it. – So maybe I am just not sick of her yet 😛

  14. gotta say that i never liked sonija in her early acting career until last 3 years. she’s beautiful and smart and deserved MHK title.

  15. She is a great beauty, but her acting sucks. But we all know that it’s at least better than certain girlies promoted nowadays. At least, she speaks decent cantonese. Therefor, I don’t mind her appearing in series again that much.

I wish her best luck with her marriage. She seems to be really happy with her husband and daughter.
