Steven Ma Gets His Spa Treatment While Filming “Deep in the Realm of Conscience”

The Deep in the Realm of Conscience <宮心計2·深宮計> production team has been on a roll with their hygiene content. After Annie Liu (劉心悠) and Jacqueline Wong’s (黃心穎) bath scene, came another bathing scene involving Kenneth Ma (馬國明) and Edwin Siu (蕭正楠). This time, the focus lands on Steven Ma (馬浚偉) and Nancy Wu (胡定欣), our crown prince and princess.

Deep, a sister production to 2009’s Beyond the Realm of Conscience <宮心計>, is set during in the late 600’s, during the Tang Dynasty of China. Steven stars as the crown prince Li Longji, who later becomes Emperor Xuanzong. In the aforementioned scene, the crown princess and his wife, played by Nancy, take a soothing bath together under a romantic atmosphere.

DITROC steven ma nancy wu 3It was apparently a very fun and relaxing scene to do, as both Steven and Nancy compared the scene to doing a spa. Steven said, “The pool had warm water that had been sterilized and filtered. Everything was done very professionally, and the flower pedals in the pool actually smelled nice. I really felt like I was getting a spa treatment. I didn’t even care that my skin got all wrinkly in the end!”

As for filming the scene with Nancy, Steven said, “Having her with me was definitely made everything more pleasing to the eye! The atmosphere was great!”

Nancy said Steven was “very wild” during their scene together, saying, “He usually has his hair tied up for the role, but this time he had it down, and he looked completely different! This scene was just a very simple scene about a husband and wife bathing together.” (Any kissing scenes?) “We do kiss on the forehead.”

The actress didn’t expect herself to get so excited about doing her first period drama bath scene. She enjoyed her time in the pool, and imagined herself to be in a relaxing hotspring.

As for the floating tray of wine in the pool, Nancy shared, “It floated really well because Steven was supporting it with his legs!”

  1. ^ lol.

It’ll be hillarious if they have a big bath scene in the end of the series xD

    1. Haha…so typical, focusing on all the “intimate” scenes to hype the series. I guess it works on some audiences…though not with me – I don’t want to watch a series where all the characters do is bathe all day long, lol (not that I was planning to watch the series in the first place).

@jjwong LOL…don’t be surprised if TVB does do that…would probably be more original than their standard group BBQ endings!

      1. @llwy12 How these scenes work on some audiences is beyond my comprehension. At least they seem to be over rape scenes. Yea, it would more original so I doubt it’ll happen. They’re not one to be outside the status quo. Lol.

@aiya Their ratings have been drowning in a bathtub for awhile IMO. I remember 40 was big success. Then lately it’s 30 where they throw parties. I wouldn’t be surprise if they’ll celebrate at 20s soon enough.

      2. @jjwong Well, part of it is TVB too and what info they choose to let the HK media report on for the series, especially when the series hasn’t wrapped filming yet. It is actually more within TVB’s control than most people think. So in a way, TVB is trying to use the sex factor to draw attention to the series or at least generate talk. Of course, they are “pros” at this already after doing it for so long, which I guess is why it annoys me because it goes back to the age-old issue of lack of respect for audiences.

As for the ratings – the sad part is that it’s not even TVB who “celebrates” the ratings….most of the time, it’s the series’ leads using their own money to treat cast and crew to dinner when a series has a decent showing on the ratings front, since El Cheapo TVB is not going to want to spend unnecessary money when they don’t have to.

      3. @llwy12 Though I understand the whole “sex sells” concept, TVB is far from understanding it. None of these bath scenes and the previous “sex factors” are neither sex nor sexy. If this is all it takes for HK audiences to think “sex sells,” then man they’re much “lok hau” than I thought. There’s more in provoking sex appeal than just scenes were “naked-ness” is implied. TVB has way too much control of the media IMO. They’ve brainwashed all the “see lai.” That or everyone is just indifferent.

Wow, I didn’t know that TVB isn’t paying the celebratory bills. That IS cheap! SMH.

      4. @jjwong Haha…remember, when it comes to TVB, they don’t give a crap what audiences truly think. They are perfectly fine with clinging on to their misguided assumptions of what they think audiences want without bothering to ask (I remember laughing when I heard a couple years ago that TVB hadn’t proactively sent out audience surveys in like a decade because they felt it wasn’t necessary, lol). Basically, TVB will do what they want to do without regard for what others think/feel because they have the power to do so and no one is able or willing to stop them.

LOL…yea…the last time I remember TVB actually treating their cast and crew to dinner to celebrate ratings was, what, a year or two ago (I’m bad with remembering exact dates off the top of my head, lol). That was when someone in upper management decided that they would do a celebratory dinner for any TV series or variety program that was able to hit the 30 point mark in the ratings that year (I think it was average ratings rather than peak ratings but I don’t remember for sure without going back and looking it up). Obviously that didn’t include very many series or programs (to hit 30 points nowadays pretty much takes a miracle, lol) and they didn’t do the dinner again in subsequent years (though there were definitely a few programs that reached 30 points after that). Also, I remember thinking back when I read about it that there was something about the whole thing that smacked of insincerity on TVB’s part, but can’t recall exactly what at the moment, lol.

      5. @llwy12 TVB is this way because they’ve the monopoly. It’s such, such, such a pity that they don’t have a competent true rivalry. Sai lai needs to band together and demand a change, lol.

  2. I’m sure all they talk about are people doing these bath scenes. I hope the drama isnt just going to be all about people bathing!

  3. The least that they should do is to supply the cast with free rubber duckies.

But then, the evil geniuses at TVB’s front office probably have already lined up all sorts of soap and detergent commercials to be telecast during the showing of the drama.
