  • Susanna Kwan and Lesbian Friend Spotted Shopping Together

Since revealing their lesbian relationship, Susanna Kwan and Willy Chow have often been spotted together. Earlier this week, Susanna and Willy went shopping in the Central district. Willy carried all the shopping bags and took care of Susanna throughout the outing.

Fifty-one-year-old Susanna Kwan has been dating the late “King of Instant Noodles,” Chow Man Hin’s daughter, Willy Chow Wai Lei, for three years. Susanna moved into Willy’s luxury apartment in Happy Valley last year, allowing the couple’s bonds to strengthen. During Mother’s Day, Willy, Susanna and Susanna’s godmother, Lee Heung Kam, took a vacation in Singapore together. Willy treated Susanna’s family members like they were her own kin.

Wearing a floral top and carrying a Chanel purse, Susanna and Willy, who was dressed in a metro-sexual manner, shopped at a Central district mall. They split up briefly, with Susanna looking at purses and Willy browsing at leather shoes. After shopping for half an hour, Susanna made her purchases and called Willy on the cell phone. Willy met up with Susanna again and even held the glass door open for her, acting like a “true gentleman.”

When reporters asked Susanna whether she was a date, she smiled, “No, we’re just shopping.” Susanna got into Willy’s Mercedes Benz and Willy’s chauffer drove the couple away.

Jayne: I came across the news of Susanna and Willy vacationing together earlier in May and was quite shocked to learn about her lesbian relationship. Shocked because of how open Susanna is about her relationship, especially after her success in “Heart of Greed.” But everyone deserves happiness and it sounds like Willy takes very good care of her.

I have one complaint, Willy’s fashion sense is similar to a middle aged man, with the boring button down shirt and serious glasses! I once met a middle-aged lesbian couple at a party and again, one woman preferred to wear masculine suits. Hmm…is it a way to advertise their role in the relationship?

I remember Susanna has already revealed her relationship status in a much earlier interview (I think with Mak Ling Ling, if I remember correctly). Yeah, she was quite open about it and it was after she gained popularity through HOG.

But, I totally forgot about her sexual orientation after that until I read this article again. I think this is what most homosexuals hope for. Their sexual orientation being a non-issue.

As for Willy, TB is like that. They usually dress very manly. Even her name sounds manly (Willy). I doubt it stands for Wilhelmina.

I used to listen to ‘We Are Family’ quite often. The manly type is called TB, while the girly type is called TBG.I don’t think it was to advertised their role. I think even single, Ms.Chow will dress like that because she’s that type.

I am shocked! Lesbian? 3 years? all these while? Shocked! And why can’t she reveal? What stigma can she have since she is already 51 years old? Has she been a lesbian since from the beginning? SHOCKED!

    3. Funn Lim says:

Jayne, I suppose in a lesbian relationship one will take on the feminine role and the other the masculine role with what is called the butch look? In a way to define whatever they want to define. Look at Ellen De Generes. And it doesn’t really help her name is Willy. From the way she wears her clothes, let me be blunt; is she a lesbian/butch or she may want to undergo sex change sometime later? That is too male oriented sort of dressing though. Even the name suggests that. Remember what’s the name, Chaz Bono? Cher’s daughter who became a son recently?

Anyway I posted a reply and nothing turned up and so I had to repeat my post! I AM SHOCKED! Is she a lesbian since from the very beginning?

    4. Kidd says:

      Funn,

She was married to composer Lai Siu Tin before for 2 years. From her radio interview I listened to last time, she did love Lai Siu Tin at that time.

Just info. Not saying or implying anything. You can read into this info however you like.

    5. Funn Lim says:

Yeah!! I totally forgot she married Lai Siu Tin before! Yes yes now I remember. I was told she resented him for not promoting her enough when she was a better singer than the one he promoted? Anyway there are women who late in life change sexual orientation. Doesn’t make her a lesbian. That makes her bisexual actually.

    6. B says:

Uhh not all lesbian relationships have to have the “feminine” and “male” role. That’s the biggest myth out there that should be busted. I’m sure she dresses like that because she feels more comfortable in those clothes. It doesn’t mean she wants to actually BE a man. So what about Ellen DeGeneres? So? She prefers to wear suits but I still find her extremely feminine.

I’m sure Susanna doesn’t define herself as a lesbian and prefers not to be labeled. She’s not hiding it because she’s not afraid to be who she is. If she’s happy then who cares who she’s dating, male OR female. Besides, I’m pretty sure Lai Siu Tin was accused of hitting Susanna when they were married; hence the divorce…

Funn, due to increasing visitor traffic on our website, our server has been overloaded and sometimes hang unresponsively. This may have the reason why your comments were not posted properly. After we migrate to a faster server this weekend, this problem should not come up again.

I guess not all lesbian couples have a male or female role. But like men wearing dresses, women who dress in such an obviously manly way seem to be making more of a statement about their sexual orientation rather than simply their fashion sense. Willy could just be as comfortable wearing a gender neutral polo shirt, but she obviously bought her oufit off the men’s rack.

    8. jayzemine says:

I am actually really happy for Susanna. She seems perfectly happy with Willy and that is what is more important. I am not quite sure why people would want to hide it, I mean, eventually it will be bound to come-out-can’t hide forever. True fans will love you no matter what, look Leslie Cheung.

    9. Jen says:

Since being lesbian is no longer a stigma, can Denise Ho and Joey Yung come out now? They have been together for years.

    10. HeTieShou says:

What Joey Yung is a lesbian too?? She has been dating Denise Ho? I did not know that… I guess as long as people are happy, it should not matter what their sexual orientation is. But I do have to say that I hope that not everyone will be homosexual or else how can we reproduce??

    11. OMG says:

      S H O C K . Denise Ho is lesbian too ? wt,,

    12. pandamao says:

i think denise and joey tried it out and it didn’t work out that well. don’t think they are still together though.

i want bowie to come out, if he is.

    13. Jayne says:

Pandamao, I’m pretty sure Bowie is gay.

Denise admitted to being lesbian… Joey’s sexual orientation is a little more ambigious. If Joey is indeed lesbian or bisexual, don’t think she is ready to come out anytime soon. Her image hasn’t changed that much from before, she is still running the idol route.

HK is still a traditional society; many artists in their prime careers are unwilling to come out.

    14. Kidd says:

I don’t want Bowie to come out. It will affect his career. Society might be more ‘open-minded’ now, but, there’s still some perception that is hard to change. Openly gay actors are at a disadvantages in US because casting directors will be wary of casting them in romance movies and so they options will be more limited. The reason the casting directors gives is that audience will not be convinced of the love story knowing the actor is openly gay. And the directors’ concern is not baseless. There are audience that admit to having such difficulty.

    15. Jen says:

I guess only time will tell.

I hope they all find their happiness.

About Joey and Denise, obviously it’s not “confirmed” but if you read a bit between the lines, they are VERY together.

Joey hasn’t had a rumored bf until the rumors with Denise reached an alarming point. Then suddenly she came out and announced she broke up with her bf recently. This was over 4 years ago.

Joey’s sexuality may appear a bit ambigious but I’ve lost count of the times she let it slip that she “trusts no men”.

Oh and the matching bracelet and ring they’ve had on for 5 years should count for something.

    16. Suki says:

Yeah but what about “Brokeback Mountain”? Was the relationship between the two lead characters not believable because the two actors playing them were straight?

    17. Kidd says:

      Suki,

It’s the double standard. Straight actors can play any role and they will be believed. But, gay actors will not. Maybe because gays are still seen as something abnormal. So, people focus on the sexual orientation more than normal. They might say ‘I don’t discriminate against gays, but, there will still some unfair perceptions’. For example, this is one often quote sentence by straight men ‘I accept gay as long as they don’t hit on me’. Uh, how come they automatically think the gay guys will hit on them? They think they are so sexy meh? It’s the perception.
This thing can’t use logic to explain. I have read 2 people admit they cannot buy gay actor playing a womaniser, but they ahve not problem buying straight actors playing gay.

That’s why I don’t want a good actor like Bowie to admit he’s gay (if he really is). I personally don’t have problem buying gay actors playing womaniser or lead in a great romantic story. But, not all can.

    18. Funn Lim says:

Do you think it is easier for a woman to admit she is lesbian than a man to admit he is gay in Asian world?

In Western world of course it is an in thing to say you’re gay.
