Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards Announces Nominations

The 52nd Golden Horse Awards Ceremony, one of the most prestigious award ceremonies for Chinese-language films, announced its nominations for the upcoming annual ceremony on Thursday, October 1 in Taiwan. Hou Hsiao Hsien’s (侯孝賢) The Assassin <刺客聶隱娘>, a film that also earned him Best Director at the 68th Cannes Film Festival, leads the race with 11 nominations, including Best Feature Film, Best Actress for Shu Qi (舒淇), and another Best Director nom for Hou Hsiao Hsien.

Aside from Shu Qi, Best Actress nominations include Karena Lam (林嘉欣) for Zinnia Flower <百日告別>, Sylvia Chang (張艾嘉) for Office <華麗上班族>, Vivian Sung (宋芸樺) for Our Times <我的少女時代>, and Zhao Tao (趙濤) for Mountains May Depart <山河故人>.

Zinnia Flower is Karena Lam’s first film in five years. It also gave the Hong Kong actress her second Best Actress nomination for the Golden Horse Awards, her first being 2008’s Claustrophobia <親密>. Karena previously won Best Supporting Actress and Best New Performer in 2001 for her debut work, July Rhapsody <男人四十>.

In regards to her Best Actress nomination, Karena expressed, “Thank you to Golden Horse and director Tom Lin (林書宇). I haven’t filmed a movie in five years, and I felt like I’m starting from zero again. This is great encouragement for ‘re-rookies’ like me.”

Vivian Sung, who earned her first nomination for Best Actress through her well-received performance in Our Times, was in tears when she got the call. She said, “To be honest, I already feel like I won the award.”

The nominations for Best Actor include Aaron Kwok (郭富城) for Port of Call <踏血尋梅>, Feng Xiaogang (馮小剛) for Mr. Six <老炮兒>, Deng Chao (鄧超) for The Dead End <烈日灼心>, Dong Zijian (董子健) for De Lan <德蘭>, and Lee Hong Chi (李鴻其) for Thanatos, Drunk <醉.生夢死>. Lee Hong Chi is also nominated for Best New Performer.

Praised for his performance in the film, Aaron Kwok has a high chance of winning Film King this year. The Hong Kong actor was nominated for Best Actor in 2005 and 2006, winning both years. In addition to Best Actor, Port of Call is also nominated in categories for Best Feature Film, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best New Performer, and Best Original Screenplay.

Aaron said, “As an actor I’ve always worked hard in performing every single role. To receive nominations after working so hard is such great encouragement for us. I am happy to be nominated for Best Actor again, but I am more happy to see the rest of the cast receive theirs.”

The full list of nominees can be seen at Golden Horse’s official site. The 52nd Golden Horse Awards Ceremony will be held on November 21, 2015 in the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall.
