Tavia Yeung’s TVB Contract Ends April 2016, Will She Renew?

Tavia Yeung’s (楊怡) management contract with TVB will be expiring in four months. The 36-year-old actress, who graduated from TVB’s 13th artist training course in 1999, has not formally said anything about contract negotiations, but a source says Tavia has her eyes on the Mainland Chinese market, and that her new contract may value several million dollars.

After two years of taking small roles in numerous TVB television dramas, Tavia finally broke out in the 2002 period drama Eternal Happiness <再生緣>, which starred her 13th training course classmate Raymond Lam (林峯). Tavia then proceeded to win numerous television acting accolades, including Most Improved Actress in 2003, Best Supporting Actress in 2008, and Best Actress in 2012 for Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles <名媛望族>.

But despite the impressive resume, Tavia has failed to achieve new representative works after her trailblazing success in 2012. The fadans of her generation, including Myolie Wu (胡杏兒), Kate Tsui (徐子珊), and even Fala Chen (陳法拉), have all left TVB, leaving Tavia to be one of the few TVB fadans left to hold the fort.

With her contract expiring in four months, fans and media alike are wondering if Tavia will follow the footsteps of her peers, or remain in TVB like Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣), who said she still has “several years left” when she was prompted with the contract question back in 2014.

But while Tavia may still be up in the air about her own TVB contract, the actress has many options left to consider. Sources say that Tavia was approached by several mainland agencies, offering her expensive contracts. The source, reported by Eastweek, said the price of her contract negotiations is quite high, in the millions. Tavia’s large contract is stemmed from the success of her performance in the 2011 Mainland Chinese drama The Emperor’s Harem <後宮>. Although The Emperor’s Harem was met with mixed reviews, the series did contribute to Tavia’s popularity in China. Tavia may use this opportunity to lure TVB into giving her better clauses for her contract, if she does decide to renew her relationship with her “mother station.”

Paparazzi followed Tavia around for a few days, and noted that the award-winning actress was quite eager to invest in expensive purchases, which adds more truth to Tavia’s rumored million-dollar contract. The paparazzi spotted Tavia, who drives a white Land Rover, hanging out with her friends and looking into buying a new car. The reporters said Tavia was particularly interested in a black Porsche Cayenne S.

Fans were worried for Tavia’s future in TVB when it was announced that her latest, and probably her last, TVB drama The Last Healer in Forbidden City <末代御醫> would not be airing on primetime television, but with these latest developments about her contract, it looks like Tavia’s future is nowhere else but bright.

  1. I say she’s not gonna renew it. There’s nothing left for her to achieve in TVB. Plus she had been cast aside while the new people are taking over. I bet Kenneth Ma is next.

    1. @krolxl Yeah, she already had her peak and since TVB hasn’t been giving her any good roles lately, she should move on to greater opportunities elsewhere.

  2. If she doesn’t renew her contract TVB will have lost another great first line actress who happens to not have come out of a beauty pageant such as MHK, which is a rare thing at TVB nowadays!

  3. Oh no, Tavia one of my fav in TVB.

Hope she doesn’t leave but I think she will.
She’s not in any big productions now,
Plus she is planning marriage with Him Law in the near future,
So more than likely she with go mainland to get big dollars then settle down

  4. I guess it’s the passing of an era when the fadans like Myolie, Tavia and Kate all left one by one, just like the previous generation Flora, Ada and Jessica etc. When Linda’s contract is up, I bet she will leave too.

    1. @arc78 agree leaving is inevitable, most top fadan siu san do this on their prime seeking for new opportunities,im not worried for tavia’s future,i rate her the same level as myolie and think ones she left tvb,she will have a bright future in the movie or mainland.she is a smart girl.

  5. Not sure where else Tavia can go since we don’t hear that she films movies or for mainland as often as the others. Does she just not get invites or did she decline them? Her acting is much better than many TVB stars who have accepted them in the past.

That said, I do agree with the others that there isn’t much else left for Tavia to achieve with TVB. She has won every TVB award there is for being an actress. I still like and will remember Tavia for her early days at TVB and actually not a fan of many of her roles after 2007. I’ve always thought that Tavia has given TVB more while TVB spent their time investing and casted other fadans in bigger and more grand productions.

  6. I would be surprised if she doesn’t leave.

    1. Considering most of her peers in her generation are already gone for greener pastures.

    2. Money is way better in Mainland China (her contract and endorsements) than what TVB can provide

    3. Way more opportunities for growth and a breakthrough role in China’s TV and movie market that TVB will not be able to provide.

    4. She’s basically accomplished everything that she can at TVB. There’s no other goal for her to reach for. She’s already at leading status in the same recycled roles year after year.

TVB doesn’t stand a chance in re-signing her, both in terms of money and opportunities. Unless Tavia has personal reasons to remain in HK, she’s good as gone. Good luck Tavia!

  7. If she choose to leave Tvb at least we still have the new Tv Queen Nancy Wu, Linda Chung, Mandy Wong and Elaine Yiu. I actually like Nancy more than I like Tavia. Good luck to Tavia in whatever she decided to do for her future.

If TV Queen was decided only among Nancy, Linda, Mandy and Elaine then I hope Linda never wins as she’s the weakest link in terms of acting. I give Elaine a slight edge over Linda, even though she’s newer, her acting is more dynamic. Mandy is heads and above better than Linda, and she’s newer in the industry too, but what’s holding her back are the lack of opportunities. Like I’ve said in another post, Linda has been given so many opportunities to win TV Queen in the last 10 years that she’s blown every single one of them. Her acting is static (which reminds of Kenny Wong, same sets of emotions and expressions despite different characters), so she doesn’t deserve to win unless her acting significantly improves, which I am doubtful that she ever will at this point of her career.

      1. @anon I agree, Linda has been given countless of opportunities and a variety of roles to showcase her acting abilities since her debut. But I think she already peaked because ever since Miss Koo, I haven’t seen any breakthrough roles for her. To me, it looks like she’s lost her drive or worn out by the amount of work TVB threw at her.

  8. Tavia used to have interesting roles in series like Heart of Greed (溏心風暴), The Building Blocks of Life (建築有情天), Moonlight Resonance (溏心風暴之家好月圓), Beyond the Realm of Conscience (宮心計), The Mysteries of Love (談情說案) and The Hippocratic Crush (On Call 36小時).

But ever since she won Best Actress for Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles (名媛望族), all her roles are essentially the same, mostly in smaller productions.

TVB should cast her in grand or anniversary series because she is one of the few actresses who can carry a series on her own.

Nowadays, I find that mainland chinese tv series are much more interesting and entertaining than TVB dramas. With the right role, I believe Tavia can be successful in China.

Totally! I am not even a fan of Tavia, and I think she will do much better in Mainland than she will at TVB, as its evident that TVB is pushing a youth movement, so she’s had many opportunities taken away from her.
