Tony Leung to Star in Japanese Film, “1905”

Fifty-year old Tony Leung (梁朝偉 )  is certainly not slowing down. Following the release of his latest film, The Silent War <聽風者>, Tony has signed on to star alongside Shota Matsuda and former AKB48 singer, Maeda Atsuko in 1905, a film in which his character will develop a relationship with the 21-year old.

Captivating the Japanese audience when he starred in Hong Kong film, 2046, with Takuya Kimura, Tony has never been in a Japanese film. The director of 1905, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, specified Tony for this role. Tony’s management company confirmed, “Kiyoshi’s role for Tony in this film was almost tailored for him. They started discussing the film last year. Kiyoshi has always wanted to work with Tony, who already has his schedule full throughout next year, but we were able to make time to film this.”

Synopsis

The story of 1905 takes place in Yokohama, Japan during the Qing Dynasty when Japan and China are on the edge of revolution. Tony plays a Chinese moneylender who travels to Japan to collect his debts and meets Chinese Nationalist, Kato Paul, played by Japanese actor Matsuda Shota. With mutual interests and for their own benefit, they work together to repatriate five Chinese revolutionaries.

Aside from Tony and Matsuda’s friendship, the film also focuses on Tony’s relationship with Maeda, who is 29 years his junior. However, Tony is no stranger to large age gaps with his costars, as he has played a couple alongside many younger actresses before.

1905 is set to start filming in November, aiming to complete production by January of next year. Shooting will primarily take place in Japan and Taiwan. The filming will be done entirely in Chinese, which will pose a challenge for the Japanese cast.

  1. The world has basically shifted its focus from japanese to korean entertainment industry in recent years. Not sure why tony stil wants to be involved in it.

    1. Because he has won every possible accolades except Oscar and I suppose at 50 years old all he is seeking is some challenge, rather than chasing fame alongside idols.

      Wow he is 50! Wow!

  2. >New Tony Leung movie
    Oh vey!

    >The filming will be done entirely in Chinese, which will pose a challenge for the Japanese cast.
    Wait…what?

  3. Maeda Atsuko…? Well, I’ve never seen her acting so I hope it turns out alright.

  4. Will Tony bet bashed by netizens for filming a Japanese movie amid the Diaoyu Island issue?

    1. I don’t think he will and I also don’t think he cares. Tony’s shadow in the movie field is big enough to escape him out of these matters.

Same if Shota-kun will be bashed for acting a Chinese – my answer is no.

  5. Wait! How can I miss? Gosh! Shota-kun! AHHHHHH! Tony, Shota-kun, Acchan, lolz, my fangirl work in here.

    1. Haha, I’m trying to imagine them doing promotions/press conferences; Shota and Tony will be stone cold and awkward. I haven’t seen much of AKB, but I remember seeing them on Tunnels and Taka-san making fun of Maeda-chan for looking sleepy all the time.

      1. Which Taka? Takamina the girl with ribbon?

Lolz, Shota-kun is quite cool in the interview, I admit. He is perfect for the role he did in Liar game. At first I don’t think he is that suitable for the role Akayami.

      2. Taka-san’s a comedian. He used to host Utaban along with Nakai (SMAP).

Yeah, Shota has this cool, quiet, mysterious air about him. Even judging by his looks alone. He seems pretty embarrassed whenever I see him smile though^^

      3. Ah sorry :D.

Yup, Shota-kun is cool from the core. But I like his rare smile :D. He looks cute whenever he dun have a half mouth smile.

  6. Wait a minute. This is a “Japanese” film but done in Chinese…? So will the views be skewed in favour of the Japanese or…?

By the way, I haven’t followed much of Japanese cinema, but have there been any films focusing on the Second Sino-Japanese war (or any of the conflicts between them and the Chinese/Korean)?

    1. I rmb there were one but I don’t rmb the name. It’s quite old through.
