Top 10 Nominees for TVB Anniversary Awards Revealed

Although the nominees for the 45th TVB Anniversary Awards will not be announced until November 21, Ming Pao released an initial list of contenders that are allegedly confirmed.

It was also reported that the one vote per person policy will only apply to the Best Drama, Best Actor, and Best Actress award categories. The rest of the awards will be determined behind close door by TVB executives.

In the Best Actor category, needless to say, the hot favorites, Raymond Lam (林峰), Kevin Cheng (鄭嘉穎), Kenneth Ma (馬國明), and Wanye Lai (黎耀祥) made the nominations. Moses Chan (陳豪) also made the list handily but he is nominated for his performance on  The Last Steep Ascent <天梯> instead of When Heaven Burns <天與地>. Joe Ma (馬德鐘) is also nominated despite the termination of his contract with TVB, due to his popular series, Tiger Cubs <飛虎>.

In the Best Actress category, there were a few surprises. There was a previous rumor which said that Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼) will not get a chance to compete because of the termination of her management contract. Notably missing is The Last Steep Ascent’s Maggie Cheung (張可頤), who left TVB for CTI this year. Also a surprise was Aimee Chan’s (陳茵媺) nomination for Best Actress, although she only played a supporting role in The Last Steep Ascent.

Another notable nominee on the list includes Tavia Yeung (楊怡), who is nominated in the same category twice. For the Favorite Female Character Award, She was nominated for her roles in Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles <名媛望族> and The Hippocratic Crush <On Call 36小時>.

The race in multiple award categories will be extremely close. It will be a dog-fight between Koo Ming Wah (古明華) and Power Chan (陳國邦) for the Best Supporting Actor award, while Oscar Leung (梁烈唯) and Edwin Siu (蕭正楠) will duel it out for the Most Improved Actor award.

Mandy Wong (黃智雯), who until recently was the heavy favorite to win the Most Improved Actress award, now suddenly faces tough competition from Eliza Sam (岑麗香) and Christine Kuo (苟芸慧). Of the two rising actresses, Eliza is having a strong showing. She was also nominated for two more categories in the Favorite Female Character award and the Best Supporting Actress award.

  1. *whistle* so much comments/complains. I shall waits for TVB official saying about the nominates.

And I would also like TVB to open up the voting for international also ^^

    1. DirecTV has cancelled Jade World and TVB on 11-18. These are arguably the most popular Cantonese stations. Dish Network is carrying TVB and Jade World so call 877-342-2104 to get signed up today!

  2. I am sure Lisa Wang as the big sister of TVB would be terribly upset if she fails to win Best Actress.

    1. Her performance is not outstanding. It’ll be a surprise if she wins.

  3. I think Moses should be nominated for ‘Master of Play’ instead of ‘Last Steep Ascent’. His performance was only so-so in LSA, but, he was great in MOP.

    1. Adam Cheng’s acting is much greater in MOP than Moses. He should be nominated b/a as well.

    2. Chik and Chow’s script in serious dramas of WHB and MOP helped their actors since they put emphasis on characterization, that’s why Moses is better in this series than his other work i.e. TLSA. I can’t say the same for the script of 4 In Love or Fly with Me though.

    3. Moses will enter top 5 no matter which series he nominated, like Yes sir no sir last year in which his acting was so average. Big brother of txb has face!

  4. My choices for THE BEST:

Best Actor: Damian Lau (SSSS), or Bowie Lam (not nominated, When Heaven Burns), or Moses Chan (When Heaven Burns)
Best Actress: Charmaine Sheh (When Heaven Burns)
Best Support Actor: Chan Kwok Pong (The Confidant)
Best Support Actress: Nancy Wu (Gloves Come Off, and The Confidant), or Elena Kong (SSSS)
Most Favourite Male: Kenneth Ma (The Hippocratic Crush)
Most Favourite Female: Charmaine Sheh (When Heaven Burns)
Best Improved Male: Oscar Leung (L’Escargot, or Tiger Cubs); or Vincent Wong (Tiger Cubs); or Edwin Siu (The Confidant)
Best Improved Female: Mandy Wong (L’Escargot)

Artistes on the nomination lists with the worst acting:
    1) Christine Kuo
    2) Eliza Sam

      1. I don’t think Aimee Chan is very bad in acting. Her acting is quite natural to me, but she needs to improve her Cantonese (not in pronunciation, but she needs to learn to speak a sentence with proper pauses and right tones, also she has to slow down a bit in her dialogues). She did quite well in “The Last Steep Ascent” and “Master of Play”, but she was only qualified for Best Support Actress, definitely not for Best Actress nominations.

      2. I don’t think Aimee is worst either. She need to tone down on her crying outburst scenes. But, other than that, I find her acting pretty decent. I especially like how she speaks softly and ‘斯文’ in ‘Last Steep Ascent’. She didn’t speak this way in MOP. This shows that she did put thought in her acting.

But, I agree she shouldn’t be in Best Actress category. Her character in ‘Last Steep Ascent’ is only supporting. The only actress from LSA that qualified for this category is Maggie Cheung. But then, it’s not the first time TVB put people in wrong category.

      1. Agree! I like her in DD. Not the best in line, but she’s perfect for her role. Even her mom in the drama is adorable. *forgot her name* ><

  5. Eliza Sam and Christine Kuo is so fake on screen! who nominated them two! horrible choices they should go take some Chinese language classes they sound horrible!
p.s. they r also very ugly!

    1. An actress with horrible Canontese pronunciation was qualified for BEST SUPPORT ACTRESS nomination. What a big joke? Perhaps TVB had so few good support actresses or even kelefes to make up their top 10 nominees!!!

      1. No, from Canada, originally from Hong Kong. I am quite up-to-date on TVB news, especially after visiting Jayne’s webistie!

I have been watching TVB and ATV drama series since 1980. After watching so many drama series, I have picked up some good acting skills from those veterans.

      2. eh my parents r from Hong Kong but i live in New Zealand. the nominees list is horrible cause of those two girls

      3. Nah, there were plenty of ‘good’ choices for Best Supporting Actress that could have rounded out the Top 10…for example: Elaine Yiu, Claire Yiu, and Rebecca Chan for Bottled Passion, Selena Li for either Gloves Come Off, Wish and Switch, or even The Confidant, Mimi Chu for Divas in Distress, Gigi Wong for The Hippocratic Crush, Maggie Siu for When Heaven Burns or The Confidant, etc….all of those actresses are 10x better than Christine and Eliza. The fact that Christine and Eliza got so many nominations is pretty much a result of TVB’s politics — there’s no other way to explain it…

      4. Totally agree. There were so many good support actresses in TVB drama series in 2012. The nominations of Christine Kuo and Eliza Sam were obviously an insult to those support actresses in TVB.

If an actress (Eliza Sam) could get nominated in her second role in drama series, she must be a genius in acting. Though Eliza Sam was not that bad vs. Christine Kuo, she surely was NOT a genius.

      5. Can’t agree more. Those hard working, talented actresses who continuously get side lined by TVB’s unfair promotion by the nominations of pageant queens like Christine and Eliza must be rolling their eyes… Especially when these pageant queens can’t act and have poor Cantonese!!! I’m not saying they have no potentials to be good in the future, it’s just that right now they are not good and should therefore not be nominated.

      6. Puff:
Agree with you absolutely. Eliza Sam seems to have lots of potentials, not sure about Christine Kuo. But their acting skills were still very green and not competitive enough in their support roles, and therefore should not be nominated for Best Support Actress award.

    2. Well said Puff… Don’t nominate for potential/ promotion, nominate for deserving performances. TVB going down hill since Sir Run Run let go of managing it.

  6. 1. Wayne Lai (黎耀祥) in The Confidant
Haven’t watched, but Wayne was mediocre in King Maker

    2. Moses Chan (陳豪) in The Last Steep Ascent
Are you kidding me? This is mediocre! Moses should be nominated for WHB where he benefits from Chik and Chow’s great script and character, but sure, he looks amateur next to Bowie

    3. Kevin Cheng (鄭嘉穎) in Gloves Come Off
Didn’t watch, doesn’t care. He has always been a mediocre actor and benefits from Law Ba’s controversial character last year.

    4. Kenneth Ma (馬國明) in The Hippocratic Crush
It’s the same Kenneth all along, only with a more inspiring medical theme and a good character. Averagely mediocre.

    5. Raymond Lam (林峰) in Highs and Lows
It is one of Raymond Lam’s most OTT performance in his career. Mediocre and exaggerating, but he has biggest chance to win. Apparently Jaynestars thinks so too?(cur the picture above)

    6. Bosco Wong (黃宗澤) in Witness Insecurity
Hui Sir was nowhere close to Michael Cripple Co and is borderline boring. A decent but mediocre watch. How the hell did a bad series got such good ratings?

    7. Damian Lau (劉松仁) in Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles
I always think Damian is a good actor, but I can’t bare to watch him here. I blame the character.

    8. Roger Kwok (郭晋安) in Queens of Diamonds and Hearts
Below average! Bowie should fill in this space.

    9. Joe Ma (馬德鐘) in Tiger Cubs
Boring and below average. Get Michael Miu to replace this spot.

    10. Raymond Wong (黃浩然) in Gloves Come Off
Boring and immature take from Raymond Wong. He’s better off in BP and even that is only decently mediocre

Best Actor conclusion: Vastly mediocre, but better than Best Actress. Tbc..

    1. Best Actress Nominees:

      1. Michelle Yim (米雪) in The Confidant
      Haven’t watched yet

      2. Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼) in When Heaven Burns
She’s ok here, benefiting from Chik and Chow’s script

      3. Myolie Wu (胡杏兒) in Ghetto Justice 2
Mediocre x10. Boring too and she’s just injecting real life Myolie Wu

      4. Tavia Yeung (楊怡) in Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles
Mediocre x10. OTT at times and mostly inconsistent and too Tavia-like

      5. Fala Chen (陳法拉) in Queens of Diamonds and Hearts
Are you kidding me? Below average! Get Gigi Wong in here.

      6. Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣) in Witness Insecurity
      Inconsistent and flat. Yawnworthy.

      7. Kate Tsui (徐子珊) in Highs and Lows
She got a good character this time and improved at times but OTT and inconsistent most of the time. Why is she this hyped?

      8. Aimee Chan (陳茵媺) in The Last Steep Ascent
      ?????!!!!

      9. Liza Wang (汪明荃) in Divas in Distress
Mediocre and Ah Jeh is being Ah Jeh. She had better days.

      10. Niki Chow (周麗淇) in Bottled Passion
Mediocre and boring. She should thank her pretty face.

Best Actress conclusion: Worse in quality than Best Actor. Mediocre to borderline bad.

      1. nowadays tvb lacks of quality actresses…sad…cant find good ones like those in 90’s…

  7. My choices r…..
Best actor:Kevin Cheung(Ghetto Justice 2, Gloves come off)
    Best actress:Tavia Yeung(SSSS,The Hippocratic Crush)
Best supporting actor:Him Law(The Hippocratic Crush)
Best supporting actress:Mandy Wong (L’escargot, The Hippocratic crush)
Favourite Male character:Raymond Lam (Highs and Lows)
Favourite Female character:Fala Chen (Queens of diamonds and hearts)
    Most Improved male artist:Oscar Leung
    Most Improved female artist:Mandy Wong

      1. Quality of acting between Eliza and Christine are different. Eliza showed that she can act in DID.

      2. Eliza Sam was not very bad for her role in “Divas in Distress”, but she was not qualified for Best Support Actress nominees . Her acting was pretty green vs. other 8 nominees. Hers was better than Christine Kuo’s (at least to me).

    1. Anna:
You must be quite young. All your bests are idol artistes. Sorry about this comment.

      1. Don’t think it has anything to do with age. Just the entire nominees list aside from the supporting charcter category, are all either idols are dont deserve the award yet…

      2. How about Damian Lau and Wayne Lai for Best Actor? Are they not good actors?

How about Charmaine Sheh and Michelle Yim for Best Actress? Are they not good actresses?

How about Power Chan and Elena Kong? Are they not good Support Artistes?

For most favourites …….. of course you can vote for your most favourite artistes who don’t need to have good acting.

      3. Sandcherry,

‘Anna’ never said Damian, Charmaine, Power, etc. are bad actors/actresses. These are simply her preferences of who should win the awards. Although I disagree with some of her preferences, I don’t see anything wrong about her bests being ‘idols’ because, after all, they’re HER bests.

      4. Sorry, Anna. It was NOT meant to be an offense. I just meant that you must be a young person who usually supports young artistes. Please accept my apology.

      5. Personally I go for artistes with BEST acting skills and not those young, good looking and and popular ones. I might have higher expectations.

      6. I agree with you, Sandcherry. You mentioned somewhere that the votes should be counted towards my favourite____. 100% agree with you about that. I tend to root for artistes with great acting abilities rather than their looks and youth, as well. But my standards are definitely not as high as everyone else’s. Hahaha.

  8. Aimee Chan is moninated for best actress? i’m sorry but that’s an insult to some of the other actresses in this catagory.

  9. in my opinion…

Best Actor: Wayne Lai or Raymond Lam

    Best Actress Nominees: Michelle Yim

My Favorite Male Character: Kevin Cheng or Kenneth Ma or Bosco Wong or Bobby Au or Michael Miu

My Favorite Female Characte: Myolie Wu or Tavia Yeung or Kate Tsui

Best Supporting Actor: Power Chan or Oscar Leung

Best Supporting Actress: Mandy Wong or Nancy Wu

Most Improved Actor: Edwin Siu or Oscar Leung

Most Improved Actress Award: Mandy Wong

    1. I changed my mind, I hope Wayne will win again this year cuz his performance in TC is superb.

  10. Look at the Txb calendar and we’ll know how they will change in this list.

    1. As a matter of fact, the top 5 finalists will mean something to us, not the top 10. TVB nominated 10 artistes just to complete their lists. The 6th to 10th positions were just for “decorations” only!

    2. yea calender is a great prediction tool, based on the calender, tvb seems wanna promote aimee, cute but so-so performance ,still got room for improvement for best actress, dont be surprise she may get smtg in this upcoming award…>:P

  11. My Predictions:

Best Actor/Actress: Wayne Lai & Michelle Yim

Supporting Actor/Actress: Koo Ming Wah & Mandy Wong

Favourite Actor/Actress: Raymond Lam & Kate Tsui

Most Improved Actor/Actress: Oscar Leung & Eliza Sam

  12. It was also reported that the one vote per person policy will only apply to the Best Drama, Best Actor, and Best Actress award categories. The rest of the awards will be determined behind close door by TVB executives.
    —————————————————–
It does not make sense to me that “one vote per person policy will only apply to the Best Drama, Best Actor, and Best Actress award categories”. Acting is something very subjective and biased. Everyone has his/her own little opinion. Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Drama should be judged by professionals, not be voters.

An artiste with the biggest fan base will easily win his/her Best Actor/Best Actress award. The awards will then be awarded to the most popular artistes, not to the artistes with the BEST ACTING SKILLS.

However, this voting system would work for “Most Favourite Actor” and “Most Favourite Actress” because there is NO acting criteria required for “Most Favourites”.

It seems that TVB is making a lot of nonsense these days.

    1. Well said, if one person one vote, should be most favourites catogery

    2. Well said. Also, it does not make sense that viewers will vote for Best Actor and Best Actress whilst TVB executives decide Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress. If TVB thinks that the audience is capable of judging acting, then why does TVB think that the audience is capable of judging only leading roles but not capable of judging supporting roles? And why not have the audience vote for the Most Improved awards too?

The illogic exposes the voting system to be the nonsensical gimmick that it is.

  13. My list:

Best Actor: Wayne – He is exceptional in TC.

Best Actress: Michelle – Exceptional in TC, as well.
or Charmaine – Beautiful performance, very good.

My Favorite Male Character: Kenneth Ma

My Favorite Female Characte: Kate Tsui

Best Supporting Actor: Power Chan – Deserves some type of recognition; he is a great actor.
or Oscar Leung – His acting is further strengthened by the characters he are receiving.

Best Supporting Actress: Nancy Wu – Been known as a great actress and is no exception in TC.
or Selena – Bias C: But, I found her great in TC.

Most Improved Actor: Oscar Leung – If he doesn’t win BSA, at least let him win this.
or Him Law – Him Law has shown quite a lot of improvement over the years. Good performance in THC.

Most Improved Actress Award: Mandy Wong – Out of the list given, Mandy has shown the most improvement. Her acting is also quite pleasant and doesn’t make me cringe. The characters she has been getting, however, makes me annoyed. I loved her in ACOTOB; made me laugh heaps.

    1. For Best Drama, based on what I’ve seen so far, I’d give it to TC.

      1. The Confidant, not Tiger Cubs. Tiger Cubs was pretty good, though.

  14. OMG, what is wrong with TVB executives? They blatantly treat audiences like imbecile by nominating people they want to promote rather acknowledging true good performance. Kevin, Roger and Moses should not be in best actor. What’s with the discrimination against none beauty pageants winners in the actresses categories? Fall is quite good, but her role in queens of diamonds and hearts was mediocre. As for Aimee in best actress, Christine and Eliza’s nominations, OMG, it’s sacrilegious! Where’s Rebecca Chan, Claire Yiu, and Maggie Shiu. They deserved to be nominated, instead of those talentless pageants winners. I’m so annoyed. Grrrghgh….

  15. All of you know that the results for this awards has always been and IS inaccurate and unfair.. so why bother getting so upset anyway?

  16. Hahaha, the Best Supporting Actor & Actress Nominees are far more exciting than the Best Leads Nominees!

    1. Agree. It is because two actresses (Christine Kuo and Eliza Sam) with NO GOOD acting skills were nominated together with 8 good veterans who acted very well. Furthermore, many good support artistes were not included in the nomination lists.

    2. Not really Aimee also made TV Queen nomination interesting and become hot gossip. Aimee, Eliza and Christine generate the most attention from this nomination list.

      1. Agree…I believe there are others who are better should be nominated. Sigh..

  17. I have been watching tvb since the 1990’s and I got to say..it’s going downhill. The FaDans right now don’t have the same qualities as the ones back then. The plots are so similar, too much sequels with no origination. I haven’t seen an 80 episode high quality drama since the one with all the old awesome actors.

    IMO

Best Actor: Joe Ma from tiger Cubs
Honestly, I didn’t like any of the characters they all portrayed. If anything, I would have chosen Kent from King Makers, but he wasn’t nominated.

Best Actress: Michelle Yim from The Confidant
I haven’t watched it yet, but I don’t think any of the other competitors are qualified. YES, Kate improved a LOT, don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge ass fan of hers, but this was only ONE drama breakthrough. Linda was sort of annoying in WI, Tavia needs to improve more, but she always gets the same roles and she never really makes her characters unique. I guess I’m being slightly biased since I never really liked Myolie, but I got really annoyed with her in GJ2.

Favorite Male Character: Kevin Cheng for Gloves Comes Off or Bosco Wong for WI
Don’t really fancy the other characters much, though I did like Raymond Wong in Gloves COmes Off, he wasn’t elected.

Favorite Female Character: Crystal Tin in King Makers or Kate Tsui in H&L
I’m a big fan of both of them, and both characters were portrayed pretty well. How Eliza Sam got chosen into top ten will forever be a question in my mind. Nota big fan of her. I honestly don’t get why she has the title of goddess, JJ Jia has a way better body and acting skills than Eliza and I really liked her character in GH2.

Best Supporting Actor: Oscar hands down. Didn’t really care for the other ones.

Best Supporting Actress: Mandy Wong or Nancy Wu. One of them winning would be nice.
How Eliza is in ANY top 10sis a mystery. Yes, she was OK in DID, but it’s because the character was kind of made for her or something. who can’t act all happy and preppy and look fake the whole time? F, if she can get nominated just by doing that, why isn’t Selena Li nominated from Gloves Comes Off?!

Most Improved Actor and Actress: Oscar and Mandy. Thet have really outshines themselves in Lescargot! I wished that JJ Jia was nominated from GJ2 though. AT LEAST NOMINATED.

These are IMO’s. would love to hear your feedback about them! Can’t wait for the awards!

    1. I am watching The Confidant and SSSS and I disagree with the many hear who is calling for Michelle to win Best Actress. I feel this year is Tavia’s year for SSSS. She was more emotional than Michelle’s often too reserved performance of a bland Cixi.

      1. I’m voting for Michelle because I believe that Best Actor/Actress/Queen/Kings awards should not be given to a person because they had one really good drama. I have yet to see SSSS and I’m doubting I will be able those it till AFTER the awards so this is just based on what I have seen so far.. I do praise Tavia for being a professional on always being paired up with older guys, but she never really changes her characters. :/ She is improving, just not enough for me to believe she is TV Queen material yet.

  18. Best actor: Wayne Lai or Kenneth Ma
Best actress: Michelle Yim or Tavia Yeung
    Favourite male character: Kenneth Ma
    Favourite female character: Tavia Yeung
    Best supporting actor: Power Chan
    Best supporting actress: None
    Most improved actor: Vincent Wong
    Most improved actress: Mandy Wong
