TVB Hopes to Promote Rising Star for TV Queen Title
Following the 2012 Miss Hong Kong Pageant held on August 26th, the next highly anticipated TVB show is the TVB Anniversary celebration. Every year, the battle of who will be crowned TV King and Queen grab the audience’s imagination. Since many of the seasoned TVB actors and actresses did not continue their contract with TVB, this year’s race for the TV Queen is between the rising fadaans against three veteran actresses!
Below are the actresses who will likely be nominated and their chances of taking the highly coveted title:
Myolie Wu
Myolie Wu’s (胡杏兒) TV Queen win last year automatically puts her at a favorable position in the running this year, however her repeat character in Ghetto Justice 2 (怒火街頭2) did not provide much of a challenging role, and the other two series which aired earlier this year, Wish and Switch (換樂無窮) and House of Harmony and Vengeance (耀舞長安), also did not receive high remarks. Even Myolie admitted that her chances are slim this year.
Tavia Yeung
Being in the entertainment industry for 12 years makes Tavia Yeung (楊怡) one of the more experienced actresses amongst the fadans in the race for TV Queen. While her improved acting has received praise and recognition, Tavia seems to lack fate with the TV Queen Award in the recent years.
However, with good reviews and high ratings on The Hippomatic Crush <On Call 36小時> and Three Kingdoms RPG <回到三國>, Tavia has a very high chance of sweeping the title at the awards ceremony. TVB will also release Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles <名媛望族> later this year, which places Tavia amongst the ranks of a respected cast, including Damian Lau (劉松仁) and Idy Chan (陳玉蓮).
Linda Chung
Out of all the fadans, Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣) had the most screen time in broadcast dramas year-to-date, including House of Harmony and Vengeance <耀舞長安) , Witness Insecurity <護花危情> and Daddy Good Deeds <當旺爸爸>. However, none of these characters were as memorable as her portrayal of Miss Koo in Yes Sir, Sorry Sir <點解阿Sir係阿Sir > last year. With that said, her chance of winning is also slim.
Fala Chen
There is no doubt that Fala Chen (陳法拉)is one of the actresses that TVB is trying to promote heavily. While her character in Queens of Diamonds and Hearts <東西宮略> was well-regarded, her acting still lacks the edge that will place her as a favorite to win.
Kate Tsui
Kate Tsui (徐子珊) is hoping that her soon-to-be-released series Highs and Lows <雷霆掃毒> will earn her a spot on the nominees list. Since she has not had as much screen time as the others including Tavia and Linda, she is at a disadvantage since Highs and Lows will not be airing until later and it is the only series she stars in this year.
Michelle Yim, Liza Wang, and Gigi Wong
In terms of acting experience, obviously the fadans cannot compare to the veteran actresses such as Michelle Yim (米雪), Liza Wang (汪明荃) and Gigi Wong (黃淑儀) who will most likely be recognized for their roles in The Confidant <大太監> and Divas in Distress <巴不得媽媽> respectively.
However, since Michelle and Liza won the award previously, it is highly unlikely that TVB will give it to them again. This year, TVB appears to wish to promote their rising stars of tomorrow! Which actress will be able to win the coveted TV Queen award?

Personally I don’t think none of the top 5 fadans deserves to win TV Queen award.
In terms of acting, Michelle Yim should have a good chance. However, she got it once already, plus she is not a biological daughter of TVB. Her chance is not very high.
Exactly……….I agree…..none of those 5 so-called fadans have any real acting abilities. Just a bunch of pretty faces that can’t really act……..but TVB has nothing else up their sleeves so not much choice.
Pretty face is exaggerating it. Only Fala and Linda and sometimes Kate are more pleasant to watch on TV screen. The other two wear too much make up and Psed too much in magazine spreads.

Fala can suit the word “pretty” a bit :P, but I think Rebecca Zhu – Fala look alike is more photogenic than her.

None of the five are qualified for TV Queen title based on their current acting and charisma, or should I say the lack of it. The award should be re-titled to “My Favourite Actress” award to make it more believable. Wasn’t it this way from the beginning until TVB changed it?
Agree. The award should be re-titled to either “My Favourite Actress” or “Most Favourite New Fadan” because none of their acting is good enough to get “Best Actress” award.

Her roles in Three Kingdoms is rather small/insignificant. Hopefully she has another series/role which she can rely on for the race.

Personally I think the award will be given to Tavia Yeung most likely unless she does pretty badly in “SSSS”. Kate Tsui may have a chance if she acts very well in “Highs and Lows”.
Just based on TVB politics, I can’t imagine Kate winning before Tavia no matter what their performances are like. Kate seems to be ranked the lowest of the 5 fadans.
I don’t like Tavia or Kate but do prefer Tavia over Kate. Kate don’t convince me as a good actress.
How she performs in HAL will determinate her chance of winning. Personally, I hope she’ll do it well because the character seems to suit her.
I think Tavia has high chance of winning this year with her acting in 36HRS ON CALL n hopefully SSSS.
Since Tavia rarely in Pre Modrn drama and her role in SSSS seems new to her as she have to become opera dancer, speak Shanghai dialect, hope she can really have outstanding job there.Her role and performance in On Call should increase her chances .

But even if she does well in Highs and Lows…I still think her chances of winning is still very low in winning Best Actress..as far as anyone knows, she doesn’t have the body of work that is as long and as experienced-filled as some of the other fadans. If she does well in HAL, she will be highly recognised and praised…but to win the title, nuh-uh.
If she does good, even she dun have a long and experienced-filled profile, she can win. But Txb awards are rigged as usual so she won’t, even with good performance.

None of these fala can be compared to Jessica Hsuan. TVB still needs to have solid performance like Jessica in drama. Tiger cubs is one of best series.

MHK goes through acting classes too. Whether they actually do well in them or not, is a different question.
TV Queen should be given to the person who
a. can act; AND
b. deserving for that particular category and performance; AND
c. pulls in the ratings.
Whether she is MHK or non MHK, does not matter.
Now they’re giving the awards to whoever they want to give. Isn’t it so?

TVB want to give the award to Tavia for her role in BTROC. But, Rosy Business and Sheren Tang’s role was too popular that TVB has to give to Sheren instead. So, I disagree that Tavia isn’t a favourite of theirs.

How do you know they won’t give it to her if she performs better than the rest in 2014, or 2015? The only one out of the five whom they gave to was Myolie, because she performed better than the rest in 2011. No fault of hers, since everyone else was lackluster. Have they gave the award to any other fadan and ignore Tavia? No, so how can you say they are trying to sabotage her. Or wait.. they are trying to sabotage Linda or Kate too!
Ci Xi is such an iconic character, and it will be a pity if they bypass Michelle’s acting to award Tavia, just because it’s her “turn”.

Like other commentators have already mentioned, it is more like the “award for whomever TVB feels like promoting”. I do think Michelle Yim is a good actress, but so is Tavia. The decision is all on TVB.
No one questions Sheren winning the award twice in a row, because at the time, it was true that no other fadan’s acting skills could beat hers. Then in 2011, Myolie gets the award cuz no one else did well. True, and she’s extremely lucky that no heavy drama with veterans aired that year. Tavia had tons of drama that year, but she was not even nominated for anything. People liked her character in TOT. Although I admit her performance wasn’t that great in 2011, it doesn’t make sense that she’s not even nominated. And then this year, her dramas were positively received, and then you see a bunch of heavy dramas with veterans about to air too. It might not be the bias of TVB, it can just be luck. If that is the case, then I must say Tavia is very, very unlucky.

You agreed with me that Myolie’s performance was the best last year, because everyone else sucked. The year before it went to Sheren. Before that, Sheren. Before that Michelle Yim, and before that Louise Lee. Are those people that TVB wants to promote? If they are giving the awards to who they want to promote, then the veterans shouldn’t get it at all? I believe that the past 5 years , all Best Actress winners were 实至名归, as in they all had the best performance of the year. So what is TVB’s track record? So I guess you think that TVB’s Best Actress award does go to the best actress. I disagree with that due to last year’s results because imo, Myolie is nowhere near “best actress”. Even though a lot of people liked her performance in GJ (btw I never liked her acting, and before when I said she did better than the other fadans in 2011, I was just saying what the majority had thought.), I thought that there were other actresses who did better. Maggie Cheung Ho Yee did pretty well in FH3 imo (at least better than Myolie). It doesn’t have to be one of the other fadans. It just depends on your own taste. And you just happen to find Myolie as last year’s best actress.
I previously mentioned that it may not be TVB’s bias, since a lot of things are just luck. If Tavia’s dramas this year aired last year, she would’ve beat Myolie for sure. So Myolie is just lucky. But this is speaking from my point of view (who believes Tavia is a better actress). And to make it clear, I never said that TVB is out to “sabotage” Tavia. Sabotage has a very different meaning. What made me think TVB despised Tavia was due to the fact that she was not nominated in any single category last year. Almost all the other fadans were nominated, and Tavia’s performance last year was better than some of theirs. I’m not saying that her acting has be approved by TVB, and that it is better than the acting of veterans (because it’s obviously not). I don’t think Myolie would win against veteran actresses either.

Like you said, the majority liked her performance, and it’s the majority that counts? Comparing Myolie and Maggie’s performance last year, is akin to comparing Kevin and Wayne’s performance. I believe we can all agree that Wayne is an excellent actor. Is Kevin an excellent actor? Not most of the time really. But the breadth of which his character demonstrate, is more so than that of Wayne’s character. It’s the limitation of the character itself, due to it being a “cool” professional character, thus he’s not able to demonstrate his acting range. Same case for Myolie and Maggie.
However, it’s not the same this year. What I’m trying to say, is Michelle’s role this year is ICONIC. It’s Empress Cixi. Which is actually the reason for what I said above. “Ci Xi is such an iconic character, and it will be a pity if they bypass Michelle’s acting to award Tavia, just because it’s her “turn” I believe IF Michelle Yim’s representative work this year is a less dramatic character, there’s definitely a greater chance of Tavia winning.

Sheren Tang will be the best Actress in TVB no matter she wins the Best Actress award or not. Unfortunately, “War & Beauty 2” will not be airing until 2013.

I really do wish tavia would win, I’m a fan of hers! I find her acting good! Three Kingdom RPG it wasn’t that bad just the ending was kinda uncertain or maybe unsatisfied and the CG was kinda bad too and some part of the storyline didn’t portrayed the character too well but other then those it was pretty good!
I hope Tavia wins this time. Her series has high ratings and she’s indeed a capable actress. Plus, she’s also the lead in the big series ‘Silver Spoon’. Her role is insignificant in 3 Kingdom, but, she played the role well.

I’m with you. I hope TY will win this round, she has the experiences and can deliver most of her roles well including 3K. Although many said her role was so useless and etc, I also think she did her part well. As for HC, she did a good job there too.
Both of you spoke my exact sentiment.I really feel Tavia shown herself having good performance in THC and 3KRPG especially THC (her performance of Yu Jai role quite memorable to me) . She consider most deserving among 5 fa dans tis year.

I think among the young candidates, she’s the best.
Among these five candidates, Tavia is the better one for now but me should wait for Kate’s acting in HAL. Myolie didn’t do well in GJ2. She looks pressured most of the time as if she’s acting under pressure.
I think Myolie was troubled with her love affair with Bosco and it affected her performances in GJ2.
Was Myolie affected in that cursed series as well? Quite an excuse.

I would vote Myolie’s emotional performance in GJ2 over Tavia’s bland performance in THC. Tavia was good in THC, but I think Myolie is better.
She can do 1000 cries of any varieties, I still don’t find any of them convincing.

I didnt think TY’s crying scene in MOL was good. It was all over the place, and overacted.
Linda’s crying was so praised that she actually got a spin off series due to that crying scene.
I do think Tavia crying scene with Law Lok Lum (the washroom scene) was very good and have some impact on there. Her crying scene during break up with Ray, I admit was funny though.
1000 gweeng cryings? Some of those cryings if we capped we can use later to show her face for break up with Bosco and cut off by Eric Huang and refused by Eric’s mummy.

I have high hope on Michelle Yim too in The Confidant, although it haven’t air yet but knowing Michelle Yim who give her best in acting.. so I think The confidant will turn out good along side with Wayne.
I hope if Michelle do well, they will give it to her instead of TY. It should be based on who had the best performance, not who TVB wants to promote. Myolie had the best performance last year due to weak competition.

Tavia is probably the most experienced among the 5 and the most consistent actress, but the problem with her is she is also the least memorable. Kate has charisma, Linda has some very memorable roles (AJCL), Fala was compelling in MR, and even Myolie is memorable — even if in a bad way.

I agree with your comment for the most parts :-). One different part is that I hope Kate will receive the Best Actress Award before Fala. It’s because Kate has acted in more different type of roles and she is more experience than Fala.

I actually like LF more as a singer than actor. I think he has a great singing voice and his songs are wonderful to listen to. His acting has suffered in the last few years and has not been as great as it was before so I’m hoping to see a solid performance in HAL.
I think LF can do both but he’s a better actor than singer. He can sing ballads but I can’t take his fast songs seriously (“Chok” = ugh!)… which is a shame since he insists that he likes fast songs more.

He dun care of Txb much recently. He is having his movie field to go and it’s a boarder road to him. Why need to bother Txb anymore. With Txb, the best he can do is the Best actor award and then wat’s up? His fee is already up to the level of Best actor in years. He is one of the highest paid actor in Txb. Winning it won’t change his price. Winning it is just a way for fulfill his achievement with Txb.
He is doing right thing to film 1 Txb series per year right now. It’s enough for Txb and his time can be used for more useful stuffs.
If you wanna try his fast songs, maybe you can try to listen to One more time or Oh No! or the new LFX6.8. Chok’s lyric is the best of it, its melody isn’t as catchy as the others.

Myolie no.1, she’s perfect in GJ2, especially crying scenes in last episode. She will win again.
To me Myolie wu is overrated , she is not bad , but still has not reached the standard where it is convincing to get BAA. I hope tvb will promote actresses like Nancy wu , mandy and selena. IMO , Nancy’s acting is so much better than myolie , linda , kate and fala.
Agree Nancy’s acting is good. It is unfortunate she is always cast as characters that audience do not like
which pulls down her 人气. And she needs a break-through role to ace it. Same for Selena – she needs a better role than the usual kind she is playing – like the one in Cant Buy Me Love. But Mandy was good in L Escargot and Tiger Cubs.
Nancy already had her breakthrough role in Gun Metal Grey. Then she completely got downgraded by TVB.
None of the fadans deserve to win based on the drama series mentioned in this article. In terms of acting, Sharon Chan and Mandy Wong performed much better this year … although they may be in the supporting actress category.
There’s something about Sharon that I don’t like. I like her but there’s this thing… she makes a really weird face.

I think that Linda really deserved an award last year and in 2008. However, TVB didn’t give her one, despite the major proportion of the audience acknowledging her efforts. This is just my opinion, but I believe that out of all the current fadans, Linda has shown the greatest improvement from 2004 when she starred in her series. I say this because I have honestly watched every single one of her series since she debuted.
There was a lot of hype surrounding Tavia after her role in MR, but after that hype died down…so did her popularity. Did hype and advertising created by her ROLES overpower her acting? If so, is her acting skill really as good as the hype suggests? Or is that just because of the series and the role? Well that’s for you to answer.
Myolie’s AMAZING. But this year, her roles and series have been mediocre. Her reprise as her character in GJ is too similar for her to earn Best Actress.
Seems to be just the luck of the draw.
Kate needs to stop pouting. She’s improved a lot, I won’t deny that, but I still think that there’s a long road that she has to walk before she becomes deserving of the Best Actress award.
Fala’s improved,not by leaps and bounds. Some of her lazy sounds still annoy me. She’s a pretty face to look at, but I don’t think her acting is strong enough to lead a series on her own.

Me too. I remember how unnatural Linda was in VOHII but as the series went on, she gradually improved. 2008 was probably her best year (AJCL, GOL, MR if I remember correctly). She was great in A Journey Call Life and her rebellious role in The Gem of Life. But others stood out more than her. 😐
I dislike Fala the most out of the five fadans. IDK why but there’s something about her that makes me cringe everytime I see her.
Kate stands out onscreen and has a ‘star’ aura. She needs to stop pouting so much and improve her acting a little bit and she’d be better than most people.
Tavia is the most experienced and she’s pretty consistent in her performances. I reckon she’d win this year. Her crying is loud and really loud.
Myolie is inconsistent, imo. Sometimes she’s good (GJ, Wish and Switch) and other times she’s so-so (Curse). Her crying has improved though.
You know they are not established fadan when Myolie already won the BA award but still called ‘rising’ and still need to compete with the other of The Five LOL

@Magic I’ll join you in your dislike of Fala. Her excessive screentime in No Regrets nearly single-handedly ruined the series for me. I think she’s okay for lightweight roles but lacks the gravitas for heavy drama or leading roles, especially those that require her to play tough (e.g. Madam Jo).
+1 on Linda. Has she won MFA yet? If yes, then maybe she can actually be a favourite this year.
TVB will have to Tavia give BA sometime, it just depends when. I don’t think Myolie will get it this year, and Kate will only get it if TVB wants to prove the awards are a sham.
Nope, Linda hasn’t won the MFA award yet. Hopefully she can get the BA award next year. She has already chalked up 3 Top 5 BA nominations [AJCL, GW, YSSS (which wasn’t really a leading role)], which is 1 more than the hot favourite for this year, Tavia (BTROC, MOL).

If Maggie Cheung has good ranting, She might be a strong candidate even though she left TVB. I hope the people are the one who vote this year and not 620 who gives all the awards to her favorites. Last year, Myolie won two awards. Also, it was a big joke of that night. Her role Curse of the Royal Harem was not that great. Jessica acted better than her.

If charmaine didn’t switch to per-series contract this year , she might stand a chance in her series as yip chi yan in WHB, she acted really well IMO. But then again ,the ratings n time slot were ‘ma-ma’ .
Charmaine was quite a revelation in When Heaven Burns. She nailed the role down to a T with her nuanced portrayal of a complex character with lots of emotional baggage. Plus dialogue was minimal compared to other dramas so it’s great that she managed to give such a layered performance through her expressions, body language, etc. Definitely one of Charmaine’s best performances, if not the best.
Tavia will grab Best Actress, unless there is an overwhelming support for Kate’s HAL or Michelle’s Confidant. Deja Vu of her loss in 2009? lol
Another year without competition. Michelle is a strong contender, but TVB is currently promoting the 5 fadans. Tavia probably will win. Next year will be tough for Fala since there are Sheren and Ada.
Biggest joke will be Aimee making it into top 5 for BA. Well, she is somewhat leading in LTS’s series because Maggie left.

Hopefully TVB promotes Nancy instead of giving her auntie roles.

Agree. TVB is highly promoting Christine Kuo, JJ, and even Eliza Sam. None of them can speak good Cantonese. There are many good Cantonese-speaking actresses, such as Nancy Wu, Elaine Yiu, Natalie Tong, or even some newbies such as Kayi Cheung, Skye Chan, Koni Lui, and they are not heavily promoted by TVB. Very strange and unfair to those actresses!

I dunno, I think Internet voting has its pros and cons. The good thing is that it’s not rigged by TVB execs. One of the pitfalls IMO is that it might become an Internet arms race between the fanbases of the various siusangs and fadans, as they attempt to out-hack and out-bot each other to win the poll.

I’m not a Myolie fan but I don’t think it was a joke for her to receive BA last year. I agree that it should have been for GJ but really, whatever. Of the 5 actresses, I think Tavia is the best actress but she really didn’t do all the well last year and should not have gotten the award. Of the remaining, it’s appropriate that Myolie won. This year, I thought Tavia did very well in THC and a fine job in BT3K. I mean, come on, it really wasn’t very well written. I think Kenneth and Raymond are good actors but I didn’t think their performance was all that either. I don’t think it’s fair to keep picking on Tavia’s role. I know there are haters but try to be somewhat objective.
I also think it’s not fair to keep saying these ladies are not up to par or that they are not leading lady material. Not too long ago, I thought Ada, Kenix, Jessica, and Flora were good actresses but I didn’t think they were anything spectular. I thought Esther was spectular but that’s my own person bias. Now looking back, everyone is saying the new generation is not like the old. I feel like in another 5 years, people will be saying “Oh, back in the Myolie, Tavia, Linda, etc era, actresses can act”.
I do agree that Michelle Yim and Sheren Tang are special but that hasn’t always been the case. I thought Sheren in her 20s was just another pretty girl that can act. I didn’t think she could evolve into the kind of actress that she is right now. All I’m trying to say is, give the current leading ladies a chance… We might have something special in another 10 years or so…

I get what you’re saying but it’s fairly unusual for HK actors to be great from the beginning. Sometimes they get better, sometimes they don’t. I thought Charmaine was pretty horrible in the beginning but now I think she’s a pretty good actress. I didn’t think Lee San San knows how to act in the beginning and although she did improve, I didn’t think she was good even watching her most recent work.
I can’t say I agree completely with you about the down-grade with the current fadans. I think Tavia and Myolie can act. And Linda has potential. (I hope I don’t offend anyone here but those 3 seem to want to become better actresses. I don’t see the passion as much with either Fala or Kate.) They’re not amazing in every series but I’ve also seen my share of less than amazing roles played by Ada, Kenix, and Flora. I think Jessica generally does her roles well but you can also call her boring. She tends to play professional roles and it’s unusual to see her deviate from them.
Yeah! Hope Tavia will walk away with BA. She has always done well for the dramas she acted in. She deserves some credit.

For me I’m thinking it’s either going or Tavia or Kate. Linda was over promoted way too much this year and the only series I enjoyed seeing her in was in WI, I loved L’Escargot but hated her role in there. I don’t think Fala did too well in her series either. Tavia did extremely well in THC, one of my fav series of the year, but in Three Kingdoms, it seems like her role was more of a supporting role and she didn’t really do much but be a love interest that’s it. Myolie’s series this year are not worthy of nominations no offense, Wish and Stitch was so boring and I stopped watching GJ2, I honestly didn’t think the first one was that great either no offense. Besides she already took home the award last year so I don’t think they’ll give it to her. Linda is a lot younger than the rest of them so most likely she’ll get the award sometime in the future.
High and Lows is one of the series I’m anticipating to watch, and I’ve seen the trailers it looks good! Kate is playing the role of a informer turned drug addict and since she’s paired up with Raymond, I’m sure her chances are going to be high.

Ella’s character is only crushing on him, but the actual couple is Raymond and Kate, besides I don’t think Ella will be nominated for Best actress.

I’d like Myolie to win again, this time for GJ2.I liked her in GJ and this time round, better in GJ2. Find her acting more subdued and matured especially in the scenes with Kevin. They seem to know and understand each other so well that they do portray a true couple. There are some very tender and touching moments between the two which I find super.

I want Myolie to win again too. She still outshined the other candidates with GJ2 despite what some people who dislike her said here.
Myolie is also humble to say that she has no chance when others like Kate are full on confidence with her unaired yet role.

I think HK awards are retarded! It is never base on the person’s talent or role. How long the person was in the industry should not be a deciding factor, if they won an award prior should not be a reason not give them one again. The award should be base on how the role was portrayed and acting period. A newbie should have the opportunity to win over a veteran if they prove to be the better actor that year. No wonder all singing and acting awards in HK are a joke!
