The summer is heating up with the impending broadcasts of two highly anticipated dramas, Ghetto Justice 2 <怒火街頭 2> and Three Kingdoms RPG <回到三國>! Both TVB dramas will air in July, setting the stage for the fierce battle for TV King at the end of the year. Will Kevin Cheng (鄭嘉穎) be able to duplicate last year’s glorious success and win the TV King title once again? Or will Raymond Lam (林峯) prove to be a strong contender?
With TVB unable to secure the broadcasting rights to the London 2012 Summer Olympics, the company was nervous in sustaining viewership. TVB looked to its ace card, triple-award winning TV King, Kevin Cheng, for assistance. TVB was currently airing Ghetto Justice, which was a critical and popular hit last year, in its late night time slot. This strategy was to build up local Hong Kong audience’s anticipation of the July 30th broadcast of Ghetto Justice 2.
Will “Law Ba” Survive Prison?
Raking in $30 million RMB last year, Kevin was TVB’s highest earning actor and most sought after artist in mainland China. In the cliffhanger ending of Ghetto Justice, Kevin’s character, “Law Ba” was seen heading to prison and losing his legal license.
The sequel will continue with “Law Ba’s” prison escapade. Even if Kevin’s Law Ba were to survive prison, will he be able to sort out his love life with Myolie Wu (胡杏兒), complicated by the re-emergence of ex-wife, Christine Kuo (苟芸慧)?
TV King Race to Start
If the audience reacts favorably to Ghetto Justice 2, there is a high chance that Kevin Cheng may once again win the TVB Best Actor Award this year! TVB was known to bestow the award to popular choices in recent years.
Each year, Wayne Lai (黎耀祥) has proven to be an especially strong contender for the TV King title. Wayne’s new drama, King Maker <造王者> will air on August 13th. If The Confidant <大太監> were to become this year’s Anniversary series, Wayne’s chances for the TVB Best Actor Award will increase dramatically.
Raymond Lam’s (林峯) popularity will likely peak once Three Kingdoms RPG airs on July 9th. Portraying the brilliant strategist, Zhuge Liang, would normally have been an acting challenge for any actor. However, Three Kingdoms RPG is a time-travel comedy, which may diminish Raymond’s chances in winning the TV King title.
Master of Play <心戰> featured the brilliant performances of Moses Chan (陳豪) and Adam Cheng (鄭少秋), who should be nominated in the Best Actor category for the Anniversary Awards. However, the drama was a ratings failure due to its convoluted plot confusing audiences. This may severely limit Moses and Adam’s chances in winning the highly sought after award.

Kenneth’s popularity is at his highest peak right now. “The Hippocratic Crush” is a turning point for him and may pave even greater TV King talk for “The Hippocratic Crush 2.”
Similar to many awards shows, dramatic roles seem to offer actors an advantage in being considered as a “serious actor” and worthy of winning awards. Cop roles also seem rare; the last one I remember was Louis Koo winning “My Favorite Actor” for “Detective Investigation Files IV.”
LF’s cop might have the same brooding personality that Louis did. That would bode well for him unless his story w/ Kate drags him down.
LF character in HAL sounds great and the brooding cop type will give make him interesting!
Audience love rough cops like LF in HAL and wasnt KM doctor role also was using his ‘own way’ in THC? I think characters like these will have big chance.

i have to agree that TV king might go to raymond if High and Low aired or Zhuge Liang is popular. His role in High I admit is interesting and dramatic too and will give him a big chance.

Highs and Lows, Silver Spoon, ATF are not confirmed to be released this year. The Confidants is said to released this year but also not 100% confirmed. Ben Wong said HAL is going to released and it isn’t a confirmation. Then overall, now only GJ2 and King Makers are 100% sure.

I want to watch HAL. Don’t have any high expectations on 3K. I support LF to win for the same reason with you. It’s annoying to see LF vs A/B/C/D/E/F every years and he ends up with Asian-Pacific award.
I’m totally supporting LF to win Best Actor as well for his role in Highs and Lows even though it hasn’t been released yet. I think he has a higher chance to win with his portrayal of a cop rather than with his strategist role in 3 Kingdoms.
I suspect TVB will release Highs and Lows next year as there are too many high profile anniversary series this year so LF might have to wait another year to get the award.
According to Ben Wong and MC Jin, it seems to be HAL for 2012. And note that they already shoot the poster for the series. So I guess it’ll come out in the end of the year. There is no reason to postpone it if Txb wants LF to win this year. And I also hope it’ll be aired. TVB can postpone watever series but not HAL without my “protest” lolz. For example, series A/B/C/D/E/F can wait for beautiful or perfect edition blah blah, I don’t care, hehe.
I am really looking forward to both series. However do think Kevin should get the award instead for Raymond this year. Do agree that Kenneth deserves something this year as he has been great and have come leaps and bounds for the past year.

Infact they were trying to promote Ron ahead of him. Ron didnt work out.

eh? how did tvb try to promote ron before LF? if i’m not mistaken, both entered tvb as trainees in 1999. i know ron started out as a dancer and was highly recommended by louis koo, but until TITS, never heard of/noticed him. meanwhile, raymond was bumped up to 2nd lead in 2001 and then into lead from 2002 onwards.
both entered trainees in 1998/99. Ron in dancing. LF in acting class with TY. LF got to acting first and got big characters as soon as that series with Miriam and ASITP. Ron debut in TITS.
Ron was in dancing class in 1999 while LF was in acting class in the same year. So can consider that Ron joined Txb the same year with LF but turn to actor later (in end of 2000 to beginning of 2001). Before that, Ron only did job as background dancer in TVB.
Ron was highly promoted during the years 2001 (TITS) to 2005, having leading roles, big series, promoted as a singer. He appeared a lot in TVB Mags during this period and TVB allowed him to release album in the year 2005 but it was a failure. After that, he slowly decreased.
On the other hand, LF has big roles from 1999 (not 2001) onwards, first leading role in 2002 due to the success of A step into the past. He was accepted by the audiences for the leading role in Eternal Happiness. However he dun have much promotions during this period and onward, until 2005 when he changed image to handsome thin guy.
So if comparing, during the period 2002 to 2005, Ron was promoted more with more investment from TVB to have works in other fields such as singer while LF dun have these promotions. For example, when they shared the lead in Twins of brother, Ron was promoted more and appeared in more TVB news and mags than LF.
Many ppl dun noe that LF did about 13 kelefe roles before having a role in A taste of love. He also did the work of a TVB8 reporter and host before having the first big role.

Maybe Fox is counting the pre filming planning where they tried to invite Daniel Wu to play Ron’s character.
If counting the entire scripting and casting which means inviting and finding the person for each role then yes it starts from 2001. TITS2 itself was planned from last year and only start filming end of this month.

TITS started in the end of 2001 (determinate the cast and the roles) but the blessing ceremony was held in August 2002. I still can rmb I’ve watched the K100 (now turned to TVB Scoop) on this on 17 August 2002.
Getting awards has no correlation with wealth whatsoever. If TVB were to hand out awards based on your conclusion, then they would have given it out to LF years ago for Best Actor in Mysteries of Love which they didn’t cuz he didn’t deserve it. I think Wayne Lai won that year hands down for a great performance and correct me if I’m wrong but just by having a wealthy family background doesn’t guarantee anyone a sure win. They have to deliver a stunning performance, have great audience support as well as the execs favour.
LF will win Best Actor but it won’t be for 3 kingdoms but for Highs and Lows and depending on whether they air it this year or next, we will have to wait and see.
Nope, he deserved to win with Siu Chai in La Femme Desperando or Alfred in Heart of Greed many times more than Kingsley in The Mysteries of (Boring) Love. Not that Kingsley only but I find the whole MOL is boring and laughable.
And acting isn’t a matter to Txb but the roles. Good role = good acting in eyes of young audiences. That’s all. So he’ll win if he has a good role.

What other series does Moses got besides Master of Play so far? I doubt he will make Top 5 from that because of poor ratings, regardless of his acting.

I’ve read fan speculation that TVB might not want to air WAB2 and The Great Eunuch / The Confidant too close to each other, since both are heavy-hitting dramas with Qing palace settings, so I’m wondering if WAB2 will be held over till 2013.
Unless another actor comes out with a really, really good and strong performance in a serie with ratings success, I think it’s Kenneth Ma’s year to lose. On Call was an unexpected success and boost his popularity, and his performance was good in there. Then his next two series looks popular so people will tune in. If he puts in a decent performance, it would also increase his chances. It is kind of like Myolie last year with 3 series. Personally, I would also like to see Kenneth win Best Actor.
As a fan of Raymond, I would rather he win Best Actor for a role and performance that is he is deserving of. It’s better not to win then win for something that isn’t worth it….kind of like Kevin’s first win (criticism that he didn’t deserve it, TVB gave to him, not a strong role, etc, etc)…it wasn’t as memorable as his 2nd win because he deserved it in his 2nd win.

I don’t see Kevin winning yet again. He was the most deserving actor last year but don’t forget last year was quite bland for TVB. No grand productions aired last year and Kevin was able to win hands down. This year is completely different. Grand productions such as the Confidant and SSSS have already completed filming and are likely to air.
As for Raymond, I think he will be overshadowed by Kenneth. Up to this point in the year, Kenneth has the highest chance. If his performance is solid in Three Kingdoms he will likely steal the limelight from Raymond. Don’t forget, Kenneth is the main protagonist.
With Wayne’s dramatic role in KM, he is sure to be a hot favorite even without the Confidant. This year’s awards may be heavily contested with Kevin, Ray, Kenneth, and Wayne in the mix. They are all sure to be in the top 5. As for who will win, it’s still way too early to tell.

To me, Ron Ng ‘s role was a little boring? While Raymond Lam have that conflicting role of both a good and bad role but eventually good which is astonishing to me so I have been a fan of him already.
He somehow has the same role in Face To Fate, I know Frankie has the main role there but again I find him boring so I skipped his scenes to Raymond. I know this show is out in 2007, but star hub in sg being slow only broadcast recently yeah.
Also, Kingsley how could I forget him, Raymond portray his roles so well that I only watch his scenes lol. The way he proposed to the female lead was pretty cool as well.
In general, my favourite actors are Raymond, of cause there are Wallace Huo, Nicky Wu, Mike He, Roy Qiu, Alec Su etc, yeah they are the main actors that I keep tab of their shows….
The rest not as much, Raymond is also the 1st canto singer that I bought his watch discography so yeah…
While some may not agree that ray is good, to me he is a great actor and singer so yeah.
