Wallace Huo: “I’ll Never Be Fake to My Fans”

Following an extremely successful year, Taiwanese actor Wallace Huo (霍建華) looks to continue his reign of popularity this year with The Imperial Doctress <女醫•明妃傳>, a period drama that will begin airing on Dragon TV on February 13. In a recent interview with Lawcourt Evening News, Wallace shared about the characters he has portrayed, as well as the ways he strives to be natural toward his fans in real life.

In The Imperial Doctress, Wallace plays a Ming Dynasty emperor named Zhu Qizhen. Initially unconcerned about politics and ruling the country, Qizhen undergoes a series of trials, which cause him to realize his responsibilities as an emperor.

The Imperial Doctress was filmed in 2014, during the same time that Wallace was filming the fantasy-wuxia drama The Journey of Flower <花千骨>. He revealed that although he did not struggle with getting the characters mixed up, since their personalities are so different, there was a heavy burden on him when it came to physical stamina.

“Both dramas had a lot of fighting scenes,” he explained. “Now that I think about it, I really do feel like I’ve gotten older.”

Looking to a Different Feeling in the Future

At 36 years old, Wallace feels it is time to try something new with his future projects. “I’ve done comedies, period dramas, and wuxia dramas,” he said. “I really have to look for a different feeling.”

Luckily for him, this year seems to be well aligned with his career goals. “This year, I have a lot of work and am focused on movie genres that I haven’t tried before,” revealed Wallace. “Currently, all of my work arrangements involve character types that are different from what I’ve done before, so I’m quite looking forward to them myself.”

Having won numerous awards for his work in 2015, Wallace expressed extreme gratitude for the accolades but admitted that he is reluctant to take them to heart. “There is room to improve every day,” he said. “Whether you’re talking about your job or being a person, you have to be better and more mature every day.”

Thanks Fans for Being Understanding

When asked how he likes to spend his time privately, Wallace replied that he likes to be at home, “doing something boring.” He added, “I’m a pretty casual person. In front of fans, I try to be myself. I will not purposely pretend to be something else.”

In accordance with this claim, Wallace does not shy away from letting fans know when he is not in the mood to smile or take pictures, such as when he is rushing to make a flight. “I’m thankful to them for understanding that actors also get moody sometimes,” he said. “So I’ve never paraded myself as having to do something, and I never will. Natural is better.”

However, Wallace’s directness can sometimes be upsetting to over-zealous fans. One such incident occurred recently, when a young female fan rushed toward Wallace at the airport and insisted on giving him a gift. When he refused to accept it, as is his habit, the young woman began sobbing loudly and could not be consoled until after Wallace relented and took the gift.

  1. He looks sooooo handsome in this picture. Of course he is a very handsome guy. I think he is not a sweet talker/charmer like other stars. That is ok with me and that’s what I like about him.

    1. @dramas4me
I do agree he looks very good in this shot. To me, he’s never really good good looking but cute enough but this shot he looks more than a little cute. 🙂

  2. Good on Wallace if he is true to his word. There are so many of the artists out there that will call the fans their aunts, uncles, sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews dad, mom just to try to have the biggest fan base ad to line their pockets. Deep down, they do not care a lick about these fans. Nuff respect to any artist who genuinely sees their fans as equals, and who cares for them as people and not bank account fillers.
