“The Confidant” Gains Popularity in Mainland China

Wayne Lai(黎耀祥) and Aimee Chan(陳茵媺) promoted their hit series, The Confidant <大太監> in Nanjing on November 24. Many mainland fans attended to show their support. It was also announced that The Confidant will air two endings, allowing audiences to choose the ending of their preference.

The Confidant began airing in mainland China earlier via Internet Protocol TV, which allows users to watch the latest dramas from TVB in high definition via the internet. It was reported that ten of thousands of mainland netizens are now hooked on the show, destining it to become a major hit. Many netizens have declared this as one of the best TVB dramas since War and Beauty <金枝欲孽>.

In The Confidant, Wayne portrays a Lianying that is very different from the historic version of the most powerful eunuch of China. Not only is he not a villain, he is a sentimental person who possesses great loyalty to his master(s). Also, most of the eunuchs in the drama do not possess the feminine characteristics stereotyped with the castrated servants. In fact, the series even describes how some of the eunuchs actually fall in love with females, and many even spoke about having wives in the future.

Lianying Is Gay?

Netizens not only praised the gentler and kinder Lianying as portrayed by Wayne, but they also adore the scenes between Lianying and Pang Sam Shun (Power Chan 陳國邦), especially in episode 9, where Sam Shun saves Lianying’s life. Over-analytical mainland netizens believe the scene is sprinkled with the ambiguous dialogue, pointing out that Wayne and Power’s facial expressions and their body language may indicate that they have an emotional relationship with each other.

Mainland netizens have been watching the drama online.

      1. Now that would be interesting if they determined ratings from illegal pirated viewing. LOL!!

      2. It’s legal. TVB has contracts with these sites to stream shows in China. I believe it’s like Netflix and Hulu in the US.

  2. Txb loves BL hints, why dun make a BL couple anymore? Like in King of ytd and tomorrow, I really like the gay couple. But long time Txb dun have any real gay couple.

  3. I’m really loving The Confidant. It kinda reminds me of a male version of War & Beauty.

    1. It is seriously beginning to remind me of Beyond The Realm Of Conscience.

      1. That does not sound like a very flattering comparison since I thought that series was awful. lol

      2. @Funn,

Just curious how does TC reminds you of BTROC? TC doesn’t have TY’s big rolling eyes there! lol

      3. Veejay, it is male version with better acting. Linying is obviously Sam Ho, thinking the best of people. An De Hai is obviously soon to be Tavia’s character minus the crazy eye rolling. Michelle is the emperor so to speak.

    2. The Confidant has been a big disappointment. It’s around the half way mark yet not much has happened and seems very very slow.

  4. No Linying is not gay. He is just incredibly nice. Sam Shun is not gay, he was just incredibly moved.

      1. Some fans just love to fantasize their idols into something in their own world.

      2. Maybe because not much is happening so they add own “salt & vinegar”

  5. How are they gay? They always help each other if one is in trouble. Whoever said they are gay, u never hadda true friend in ur life. So suckk to be you. Hahaha
