Wayne Lai Prefers Simplicity Instead of Extravagant Lifestyle

Over the span of his career, Wayne Lai (黎耀祥) has played a diverse range of roles. He stars as the wealthy heir to a huge business empire in TVB Anniversary series, Overachievers <名門暗戰>. While Wayne values the quality of the production, the strong chemistry among the cast, and the multi-dimensional character development, he is much less appreciative of the lavish lifestyles that are depicted in the show.

Wayne Values Freedom Over Wealth

Due to his role in Overachievers, Wayne had a taste of living in the life of a Hong Kong elite. Having experienced luxuries like private jets, yachts and private islands, Wayne was, however, not impressed and prefers his own relatively ordinary life. He adds that having limitless wealth may appear desirable at first glance, but is actually a dangerous and stressful existence.

Wayne emphasizes that he values freedom over wealth, “To me, to be truly happy in life, one needs to have freedom, both the physical freedom to do anything I want to do, and also freedom from mental stress.”  He cited the example of Hong Kong tycoon, Li Ka Shing <李嘉誠>, who never goes anywhere without a team of personal bodyguards. Wayne also mentioned that superstars Andy Lau (劉德華) or Tony Leung (梁朝偉) lack freedom, as they always attract wide media attention when they appear in public.

“I can go about my daily life with no problems, whether I am shopping or visiting street food stalls. Right now, my finances have also improved, but I have not lost my freedom. This is the ideal position to be in!”

Wayne is Content with Being Financially Secure

Wayne sees money as merely a means of security, as he does not crave extravagance nor luxury. His wife also shares similar views. Before Wayne became famous, she once told him, “You don’t need to be able to afford a property to marry me!”

True to his philosophy, Wayne and his family are not residing in the house that he had meticulously designed its fengshui, and had saved up many years for. Instead, they are living in a rented property near Sheung Shui, while leasing the “fengshui house” to a friend. Wayne explained, “The original house has become a bit cramped, especially as my son is growing up and becoming taller. We were actually hoping to purchase a larger house, but property is expensive, so we are renting for now.”

He adds that being financially comfortable is more than he could ask for, as he had not entered the industry with any expectations of success. He has seen many of his seniors in the industry eventually retiring in obscurity, while the increasing number of good-looking newcomers in the industry intensified the competition for good roles. For Wayne to have received leading roles in light of such circumstances, it was unexpected and he already feels immensely gratified.

    1. that’s why i like him for good acting and good person.

      1. He is overrated . Overachiever is a real flop for anniversaries drama

      1. I interviewed a many engineers and I knew they bs-ed but there were bs-es that forgivable.

  1. that’s good the he didnt let by being famous get over his head!!! I read alot of artist here in US that they let fame overpower them and they turn into snobs but once they fall its all over they turn into drug & alcohol make a obsanity scene in public and etc……….

  2. He sounds like a genuine humble guy.

Living a happy comfortable life where one can enjoy time with family and friends is priceless.

  3. Love this article. Wayne is so wise and humble. Financial security does lead to greater freedom, and freedom is happiness. Happiness is everything hehe.

  4. Were more people like him! I admire his philosophy re wealth vs freedom. While money is necessary freedom is more so. His is a happy and contented life.

  5. it’s great to be popular and yet having the freedom to go anywhere as he wishes.

  6. honestly the man lacks for nothing. if he wanted to venture out, pretty sure he’s going to get good lead/semi lead roles no matter what or where. it’s just he appreciates the minor things and things he has so much, he doesn’t ask for more. it’s a good thing to be content with little, but it almost feels like he’s selling himself short. liu kai chi, for instance, is doing great at hktv. good roles, variety of characters, respect and good salary. if lkc wants to venture out, too, he can. he just chooses not to.

  7. Wayne has returned!! Hs been awesome in overachievers. Must see power Chan was awesome too.

  8. I love Wayne humility. He doesn’t choose to live extravagantly, or flauntly showing off showering his significant others with tonnes of brandname hanbbags and expensive holidays even though he can, since he’s a staple TVB front face since Chai Gau.

    1. Wayne also choose the right companion who married and love him when he has nothing, and surely not because of wealth, popularity or looks.

    2. Some other artistes younger than Wayne should learn from his humility and example, not just knowing to flaunt their money and wealth.

      1. i admire his humility but of course he can say such things as “i values freedom over wealth” now. this is because he has “arrived”.but would he say the same thing when he was in the begin of his career? when he dont have any money and propperty? and i doubt if he can resist if a movie company will offer him a 100million contract, like raymond lam.

      2. Koko,
Wayne Lai is saying he wants money for security not for an extravagant lifestyle. There is a huge difference. Someone can have a lot of money and yet still live a humble, simple life. That is what Wayne Lai prefers to have. I also wish the same for myself.

    3. LOL

I’m sure most people know who you’re “namelessly” referring to. 🙂

And, that’s their “publicity stunt”, which is getting old.

  9. ….having limitless wealth may appear desirable at first glance, but is actually a dangerous and stressful existence ===> he values freedom over wealth, “To me, to be truly happy in life, one needs to have freedom, both the physical freedom to do anything I want to do, and also freedom from mental stress.

Dude is wise. He also understands contentment, which also leads to peace of mind.

At the end of the day, always hankering after more or keeping competitive, just means one cannot get off the treadmill to leisurely really enjoy the spoils.

  10. Like the rest of you, I also think that he is a genuine guy who is down to earth and humble.

  11. 钱是赚不完…how much is enough? wayne is committed to tvb and his family by standing in hong kong.

    1. Precisely. And when does the race end?

At some pt, you learn to be content and as a result more peaceful within.
The people who rage, are sometimes those who are remain competitive and discontent with what they have.

    1. The “extravagant lifestyle” can be very empty, so can the crowd.

And, after having tried every thrill and pleasure, been there and done that 200x … desensitization just sets in.
      Is that really happiness?

Ability to still be able see and appreciate the little things in life is really what makes people happy and peaceful within.

  12. wayne is contended. he is 3x tv king.
his audience is confirmed. what more does he want?

  13. Not everyone thinks like Wayne, it’s good that he thinks like that. Actually what we’ve is all temporary, we come with nothing and we go with nothing. We can’t bring along those wealth or material we own in this world. Everything is being loaned to us.
