William Chak Denies Unusual Relationship With “Godfather” Mr. Lau

Wealthy businessman, Lau Ding Sing (劉定成), gained notoriety for his titillating photo collection of muscular men over the last 40 years, which included numerous Mr. Hong Kong participants. It was revealed that Mr. Lau paid for 2010 Mr. Hong Kong winner, William Chak’s (翟威廉) birthday party earlier. William even addressed Mr. Lau as “Godfather,” arousing speculation as to their true ties!

Lau Ding Sing, has been convicted of indecent assault and intimidation of 3 male actors and 1 fitness trainer. The judge presiding over the court case has ordered a psychological evaluation of Mr. Lau’s mental state before deciding upon his sentence. Since Mr. Lau’s trial started in March, the gay 62-year-old professed that many of his former “godsons” in the entertainment industry have kept their distance for self-preservation.

William Chak’s Relationship With Mr. Lau Comes Under Fire

Following Him Law and Benjamin Yuen (who had taken photos for Mr. Lau’s private collection), William Chak became the latest TVB actor to be linked with the notorious wealthy businessman. Mr. Lau is a known admirer of Mr. Hong Kong participants.

In an interview with radio host, Eileen Cha (查小欣), William’s friend and former Mr. Asia, Jerry Leung (梁皓楷), revealed William’s relationship with Mr. Lau. Jerry said, “William invited me to a party, in which William’s family was present. When he introduced Lau Ding Sing to me, William referred to Mr. Lau as his ‘Godfather.’ However, William did not explain their relationship.” Jerry also noted that William’s earlier birthday party was paid by Mr. Lau, but believed that William did not pose in any illicit photos for the elderly man.

TVB Issues Clear Warning to Stay Away From Mr. Lau

Since Mr. Lau’s trial grabbed headlines, TVB issued clear directives for its artists to steer away from the scandal. TVB wished to preserve the images of their artists. Since the outbreak of the scandal, Benjamin Yuen has kept a low profile.

After it was revealed that William and Mr. Lau had partied together, William said, “I do not think that I did anything wrong.” William met Mr. Lau through his godson, Hanson, who happened to be William’s soccer friend. William claimed that he was unaware of Mr. Lau’s fetish for photographing muscular men at the time.

TVB executive, Virginia Lok (樂易玲) met with William privately over his rumors with Mr. Lau. William was chided to cherish his image and work opportunities at the company.

William Admits Mr. Lau Paid for Expenses

William appeared to have taken TVB’s advice. In a telephone interview, he was careful in explaining his relationship with Mr. Lau. William said, “Everyone calls him (Mr. Lau) ‘Godfather,’ but we did not go through any formal rituals. We do not have an unusual relationship either.”

Regarding the expenses for his birthday party, William admitted that Mr. Lau had footed the bill. “We wished to pay Mr. Lau back, but he refused to take the money. So we had to give face (to him).”

Although Mr. Lau was convicted of indecent assault and intimidation and may even go to prison, William did not wish to comment on Mr. Lau’s misfortune. William said, “I will not criticize someone else’s misfortune!”

Jayne: In an earlier interview, Mr. Lau implied that 2011 Mr. Hong Kong winner, Clayton Li, may also be his “godson.” With or without any ritual, calling someone “godfather” implies something more than a casual relationship.

I’m a bit unsure as to what to make of this recent news linking William to Mr. Lau. The controversy is of course that William received some benefits through his godfather, Mr. Lau. The paid-for birthday party expenses are what is currently known.

The implied message is that William was taken care of by Mr. Lau, as a sugar daddy or “godfather” would take care of his protegee. There is no proof. It was not revealed who had organized William’s birthday party. If Mr. Lau had organized it, a different interpretation surfaces. If William did not know Mr. Lau would attend, that would be different. William’s response hints that there were a bunch of other Mr. Hong Kong participants present.

Anyhow, with Mr. Lau’s reputation, any association with him right now is unflattering. Hence, Ms. Lok summoned William to meet with her. The contents of their meeting were revealed by Deputy Director of External Affairs, Tsang Sing Ming. I find that unnecessary if it were a normal meeting to just understand the situation. However, TVB appears to wish to put William in place a bit and make him an example.
