Yammie Nam Turns Into “Old Granny”
Since Yammie Nam (藍潔瑛) incurred mental problems in 1999, she often asked to borrow money from the people she knew. Fortunately, lawyer Tsang Kuen Wai (曾權威) extended a helping hand to help her get through challenges. Unfortunately, Yammie did not mend her ways and gambled away the money in Macau, resulting in the loss of her good friends. After Mr. Tsang halted his financial assistance, Yammie was often spotted smoking on the streets, appearing lonely and pitiful.
Earlier, the reporter spotted Yammie Nam riding on the train. Yammie hugged a backpack to her chest, while appearing to be in a trance-like state and possessing odd expressions. She frequently glanced at other people’s shoes and then her own shoes.
In fact, Yammie was only 47-years-old this year, however, he hair was turning white and appeared to resemble an “old granny.” It was difficult to imagine that in the past, Yammie was the most beautiful among the “Five Beauties” at TVB in the 1980s.

Actually Yammie was one of my favourite actress in TVb back in the 80s. The first series that I started liking her was the one she casted as a ghost, Sheren as the fox spirit and Roger as the student who loves Yammie the ghost. She was really beautiful back then…and what happened to her now!!?? OMG.. poor yammie.
The series that you are talking about is the Vixen’s Tale. I also enjoyed that series and Yammie was soo beautiful as the ghost. My most favorite series of her is Heir to the Throne is.. She was so sweet and beautiful as the goddess…
I am so sad and shocked to see that Yammie’s life just seems to be getting worse and worse… She looks like she is in her late 60s instead of her actual age. I wonder if she will ever turn her life around??? I think her life is just a combination of depression, laziness, boredom,etc… So sad… I wonder if she still has any family members that can help her turn her life around?? I know that her parents both passed away so that may be one of the reasons why her life is so sad… How tragic…

Yeah, it’s sad that Yammie turned out this way, if she has someone who loves her and stay with her thru hard time, I doubt she will ended up this way.
I guess its her difficult behavior that drove friends away.. it will be really hard for her to be cured if her heart and mind doesn’t want to be cured in the 1st place.

she has mental problem. If you follow her news, she had a nervous breakdown couple years ago and things been going down hill since then. It’s is very sad. I search for her news sometimes. It said that started from her role in Greed, where she act as mental disturb and unable to pull out herself. She used to be so pretty, same age as carina lau but she look like old lady now.
I heard she got the mental problem because when she was filming in China someone from the mafia raped her and ever since then she changed. Im not sure if that is exactly true though so dont take my word for it.

This is so shocking. Just a few years, she has ages so much. I remember reading the news of her gambling and in the accompanying pictures, she was still beautiful despite being makeupless. Her hair was still black. How come she suddenly aged so much?

I remember you mentioned that you found Yammie as one of the most beautiful all time TVB actresses. She was indeed very beautiful in her prime.
When a person lives in unhappiness and constant depression, their heartbreak eventually shows on their face. If the face is constantly contorted with emotional pain, that expression makes a person age faster. I found her physical transformation to be shocking and very saddening, especially when you think back to how promising her career in the beginning….
Actually except for the white hair (she could have had white hair all her life-she may have coloured it) and wrinkles, if you look you can still see the beautiful features. I suppose anyone losing hope will look ugly or old.
Never thought she was beautiful but she was good-looking and despite her very aged and distressed appearance now, her facial features are the same. As an ‘old’ woman, she is and likely always will be good-looking.
Well Yammie has had a really hard and depressing life so of course she would age more than the average person would. She has no financial resources or anyone to help take care of her. The last that I heard, she was receiving welfare from the government since she is not able to work to support herself. If she is even struggling with the most basic essentials of life, then how can she have money for make up, skin care or any of the other things needed in order to maintain her looks??
I think that Yammie was once one of the most beautiful actresses ever. It is so sad that her life is ending up like this. Carina is only one year younger than her and also looks old without her expensive packaging, but Carina has lots of money, a good husband, family,etc… while Yammie doesn’t seem to have anything. I feel so sad for her and wonder how she will live for the rest of her life??

Well, many of her former TVB friends and other friends did try to help her. However, in her condition it was hard to be her friend because all she did was ask for money and lost it all. I remember that she once sold her home and lost all of the money. Her lawyer friend helped her with a lot of money and it still ends up like this..Many of her friends stopped contact with her due to her behavior so it is hard to even be her friend, therefore, how can they help her??

there has been so many circulated rumors on how she got to this state with one of them involving rape from mobsters.
Her story is very long and complicated… Many things happened to her that has snowballed into what she is right now…There were rumours that she was raped, her parents passed away, she could not get out of her mentally disturbed character in The Greed of Men, relationship problems, car accidents,etc… the list just goes on and on….
it’s sad how veteran actors cannot remove themselves from the actual script once the filming is complete, i.e. rumored Leslie Cheung’s death.

Actually, despite Yammy’s white hair, her features still look beautiful. It is sad to see that her life turns out to be this way, her career rises like a meteor in the 80s and now she has nothing left in her career. I know “Mental Illness” is very common nowadays and intervention at the on set stage is very important to the road of recovery.
Sadly, that’s how life is… You can be at the top at one moment but way at the bottom the next. I really miss the 80s when TVB still produced great series and so many other great things. Yammie was such a beautiful and great actress and I feel so sad and bad for her…
I agree that Yammie still has great features. You can tell that she was once a great beauty even though she looks really old now… So sad… A few years ago she still looked beautiful even without make up…. I guess these last few years have been even tougher on her…

I heard that she had a sad childhood too. Many that have had a sad childhood would at least have a happy adult life. But sadly, Yammie does not seem to have that either. I wonder if her life would have been better if she accepted the proposal of that one lawyer friend of hers years ago???

It appeared that lawyer friend, David Tsang Koon Wai, had proposed to her several times. She rejected him and he took care of her financially for years. She had no source of income and depended on him primarily. In 2006, she attempted to turn around her life by taking some make-up classes to upgrade her skills to help her earn a living. But that fell through and she was in and out of mental hospitals and filed for banruptcy in 2006. It was a series of events which spiralled and Yammie has been unable to recover since.

Thanks for all of your work and everything. In fact, we have only heard about Yammie’s problems recently but not really of her childhood or anything before that. I only heard that she had a sad childhood from one of her old fans. He used to have a site called RockmanChun’s page. I am not sure if he is still up or not, but he seemed to have a lot of rare photos of Yammie and knew some info of her that many did not…He had other actresses on that page as well and many rare photos of them too. Great page.
Didn’t that lawyer friend of hers turn around and said something bad about Yammie and all?? He seems very 2 faced since he said that she was pretty and proposed to her, but then also saying that she was old and ugly and that he did not want her… Maybe it was good that she did not accept his proposal back then.
Very sad to see her to turn into an Old Granny so soon. She was very pretty when she was young and should have a lot of chances to become famous.
I just think the paps or whoever low life noob took the picture is just taking a bad shot of her. She could be just sleeping or dazed off. I do that all the time, esp on long train rides.
I really don’t post much, but this picture makes me ultra sad to see someone who is pretty to looking so rugged. I feel sorry for the reporter who took this sad picture because if anything that goes south, it will be blood in their hands. I can’t help that a lot of people don’t recognize her, or sadly, probaly don’t care for her anymore. I just hope friends of her who can help, help her.

Her behavior seems to go beyond depression… there were previous news of her acting strangely on the streets… walking around in her pjs, punching her fists in their air… perhaps she developed schizophrenia or some other mental disorder. I don’t think it’s just plain laziness.
Hm… I think you may be right Judy. If Yammie was mentally stable and all, I think she would have been able to advance or at least continue in her career and maybe even become successful since she is a great actress. I believe that many would agree with me after seeing her acting in a number of series and movies. She really does have talent and all and it is a big pity that she has to end up the way that she is now.
agreed. she obviously has other problems.. like addicted to gambling which is perpetuated by her mental illnesses. Perhaps if she had the right treatment early on, she could have salvaged her career.

Oh no, the incident about her boyfriend committing suicide was way back in 1986 while she was filming Heir to the throne is. During that time, her life and career was still going well. People actually praised her for being so professional and still performing well during the filming of the series inspite of her boyfriend’s suicide during that time.
I think she is just unlucky and is plagued with many misfortunes in life… very sad indeed.

Well, I did not know much about her relationships back then. I just heard from a long time fan that told me that her boyfriend committed suicide while she was filming. THere are many couples that are loving, however, there are things that you hide and don’t tell even your closest family members so why would you tell your boyfriend/girlfriend??? It just depends on the person as well since there are people that choose to hide all of their feelings inside and refuse to tell anyone. Like with Leslie Cheung, he had a close relationship with his “boyfriend”, but still committed suicide in the end… They both loved each other very much too. I don’t know anything about Yammie’s relationships or who she dated… I remember that she did date some well off people. I also heard that one of her former boyfriend’s fathers hated her too…
Very sad story! So after seeing this, I googled Yammie’s name in Chinese to check out the articles in Chinese. Here’s what I found (roughly) as to the speculated reasons why/ how she ended up like this and also some other stuff Yammie said in interviews:
1. She was allegedly raped by a HK triad entertainment boss while filming in Singapore and she still remembers him sneering at her after the despicable act;
2. Her parents passed away one after another;
3. Two of her old boyfriends committed suicide, one was a famous DJ in HK who jumped off a building and one was the son of a famous guy (forgot the name) who burned coal to kill himself;
4. Her role in Greed of Man was so tragic and allegedly she told Alam Tam that she could not get out of Ah Ling’s mindset;
5. Her lawyer ‘friend’ who claimed that he gave her a lot of money only gave her HKD30,000 in total and has been boasting to everyone that he has been ‘taking care’ of her.
6. She overheard him on the phone saying that the only reason he gave her money was to get some publicity as although he is wealthy, he does not get in the papers often…and she has turned so old and ugly now, even if she crawled into his bed, he would not want her;
7. She is the first TVB fadan who has to depend on the government for the roughly HKD3800.00 a month to survive. She also purportedly works in a club as a singer for some extra income. She is now renting a room which according to reporters is very dirty and strewn with cigarette butts, food containers (dirty ones), newspapers etc.
7. She was once walking around in public with a bloody skirt (allegedly her menstruation);
8. She keeps telling people/ friends that a male evil spirit has been disturbing her and talking to her;
9. She claims that a good gf of hers cast a curse on her while she travelled to Nepal with her and her then bf (a rich guy who bought her a HKD6 million house) back in the days and that woman stole her boyfriend and married him (till this day they are still together)…if I’m not mistaken, the surname is Cheng.
10. She has also been allegedly seen walking around a red-light district asking men if they needed ‘company’.
Some of the stuff you’ve probably already read on here though…a very tragic story!

What a pity if that is true and shame on that friend. Yammie could have had a very happy life and I wonder is it fate that her life is now so tragic? I knew that one of her boyfriends committed suicide back then, but I didn’t know how and much about them. I did not know that 2 of them did.. How tragic… Many of the former actresses are actually well off now(if they are still alive since some have passed away)or at least have a happy and decent life. I know that religion is more suitable for some than others. My mom and aunt for example are devoted Buddhists and they embrace it even more after the passing of my dad and brother. However, I really question it all since we don’t know for sure if any of it is even true or even exists at all. I think it is ok to believe in any religion as long as you know your limits and aren’t blinded by it.
One of the things that I do oppose is when people try to impose their religion or their beliefs on others. I really can’t stand that regardless of what religion you are. You mentioned about marriage and that really reminds me of all those Christians and Catholics that always blackmail their husband/wife into converting into their religion if they want to get married. I really oppose that as well and believe that if you love your husband/wife that much then you should not force them to convert.
I just personally don’t believe that we should base our life too heavily on religion because we can get too blinded. I guess each person is different, but I don’t feel that we need religion in order to get through life or be a good person. There are many good people that don’t believe in any religion at all and they are fine… I guess some people feel so lost that they need something like religion just to live… I think I just don’t understand that since I am not religious…

I do believe that black magic, vengeful spirit can really make someone abnormal in the sense that the person will act like a crazy person and dunno what he/she’s talking.
If the news of that a friend has casted a spell or maybe an evil spirit which has been haunting Yammie is true, then it could be possible that Yammie is really under possessed/spell that she doesn’t even know what she’s doing..
But this is all supernatural belief..
I believe in the supernatural spells and all because my family members have known people that have been under those spells before…. I was skeptical at first until I actually met some of those people… Boy, possessed people really are NOT themselves and are no longer themselves. They are always in a constant state of daze and never know what is truly going on… If that happened to Yammie, I wonder if she can ever be saved from it??
Maybe a powerful “sifu” or “taoist” may be able to remove the spell from Yammie.
But question is no one can confirm if Yammie is really under spelled unless someone reliable is willing to step out and help her.
Also, I think TVB esp those top managements should help Yammie since she was once their famous fadan and family member.
Yea, that is true… No one knows for sure if she is possessed or whatever. I have heard that IF you are possessed then it is hard if not impossible for it to come out of the body.
Not sure if TVB is willing to help Yammie since she now has to rely on the government in order to survive on a day to day basis…

She has not worked with TVB for many many years so I don’t think they will help her. I remember back in the days when they were casting for Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre 86 and they were going to give the role of Zhao Min to her. However, they said that she was not “behaving” so they gave Kitty Lai that role instead.
Sadly, she is not mentally stable now or else she can come back and work for TVB…

From my recollection in reading a Kitty Lai article (dated around 2006), I believe she worked as a church counselor since retiring from acting. She was not happy for a lengthy period of time and after becoming a devout Christian, her life turned around.
Yes, her husband is a pilot. The couple met at church. Ada Choi was Kitty’s bridesmaid. If I am not wrong, I believe Kitty still works at the church.

Yea, her husband is named Jacky but I forgot his last name at the moment. Ada was Kitty’s bridesmaid but it was not only her. She had 9 bridesmaids(including the maid of honor). The others from the circle are Monica Chan, Sharen Tang, Jacqueline Law, and some others not from circle. Of course her sister was her maid of honor. Kitty invited many of her friends from the circle such as Noel Leung and her husband, Athena and her boyfriend Paul, Carol Yeung, Shallin Tse, Theresa Mo,Eugina Lau and her husband, and many others… Her wedding was pretty grand. I remember Sharen saying how she is now only good friends with Kitty just because she became Christian. I find that a bit sad since they have known each other for many years but weren’t friends at all and only became friends because she converted… Basically, they only became friends since she converted to the same religion…

Religion is one of the paths that guide people through difficult periods of their life. If a particular religion can inspire people to find happiness, direction, meaning in life, and do good (and not at the expense of other people), then I think it’s that person’s personal choice. Personally, I think as long as it has a positive influence, then it must be a good thing for her.
The church environment offers a great supportive community feel to it, especially if people like talking about their problems in group settings and bonding with people that are experiencing the same problems and fueled by the same quest in life. Sometimes coming across the right religion depends on the person’s point in life and the level of support they are looking for. Perhaps certain principles of Christianity appealed to Kitty more. Many married spouses also convert their religious beliefs due to exposure to different ideas and experiences, finding a better fit with their new adopted religions.
Along the path of life, I think we should remain open to experiencing new things and adapt as see fit. Even if that means completely changing one’s religious faiths (which can be frightening due to re-examination of inner self and changing what could be a lifetime of beliefs).
Sometimes the new faith will change our perspectives in life so much, moving us to want to become even further involved, wishing to spread this excitement to other people around us, perhaps coming across as too zealous. It is like coming across a great product that you can’t help recommending to friends, whether they asked you or not. Sometimes we have such strong passions that we cannot help but wish to spread the goodwill because of our good experience from it. Rather than see it as overzealous people trying to convert us, I see as they come across a good thing that they would like to share. Without trying it, how do we know it is not suitable for us?

I accidently posted my other response up there but just wanted to add that I like your analogy about the product and introducing it to friends. However, I feel that introducing just any old product versus a religion is different. Christians have to realize that there people with other beliefs or don’t really believe in any religion at all. If people want to believe something then they will so I don’t feel there is a need for me to try to force my beliefs on them. You know what I mean??? I really get annoyed at those mormons that go to our doorstep… I just say that I am buddhist but some still go on and on about their religion and still try to convert me and others… I really don’t like that…

Maybe you will not feel as annoyed if you see it from their angle. They are trying to spread a faith that they think will help people, so it stems from a good intention. As long as they don’t turn around an insult our personal choices. 🙂
If religion can heal and make people lead more inspired lives, that’s great. We need more positive thinking.
@HeTieShou…really? Impossible to invite out of? I thought that high Buddhist priests/ lamas have been performing such rituals to help the possessed for centuries? or does it mean it is very hard to do so?
I do read up a lot on the supernatural realm as well so it’s interesting to know..you actually met with some people who have been under those spells? So what happened in the end? were they able to get out of it and were those spirits invited out of their bodies successfully?

I guess so and I think that it is good if religion is able to help some people, but it just depends on the person and stuff too. I don’t oppose if people believe in what they believe, but I believe that there are limits and it is wrong to force what you believe onto others regardless of what your intentions are.

It is hard to make a spirit come out of a person that is possessed. It also depends on the spirit. If it had a good heart then it is a lot easier, but if not then the person that is possessed may never be themselves again. I have heard so many stories since one of my cousins goes to a Buddhist temple every week and has witnessed some of these sessions. He said that it scares him as well…

I also wanted to add that in some cases it was successful and the monk or whoever was able to invite the spirit out, but not in some other cases. I heard that it depends on the spirit and how “nice” they are….
wow @HeTieShou…so scary! So just curious what happens to those people then (the failed cases) of exorcism? So…in the first place..how did those people get possessed? Did they do something ‘wrong’ or were they just unlucky? Or was it a curse cast on them?

I heard from my mom and cousin that the people that get possessed are mainly unlucky.I don’t know what religion you are, but my family are mostly Buddhists and when we go to the temple, there is an area where there are photos of people that have passed away. Basically like a memorial temple for the spirits and sometimes some of the those spirits possess you when you are there praying. That is why my mom is really careful and always tells me to leave right away after I light an incense stick. The people that don’t get saved, just stay that way and continue to act not themselves.. I heard that this one guy is normal at times but sometimes when the spirit really takes over, he cusses and curses his family members out of nowhere.. Really scary.. The ones that do get saved, slowly recover but don’t act themselves for awhile and often appear like they are mentally unstable. My cousin showed me one of those people when I went to the temple one time recently and yea, that girl looked like she was possessed previously since she did not always look and act “normal”…
@HeTieShou oh thanks for the info..actually my family and I are Buddhists too and I have gone to pray to dead ancestors at graveyards…I think that is why all graveyards have a shrine to a God there as that God takes care and guards the spirits in the vicinity so that is why we always light some incense for the God first before praying to ancestors.

I did hear about Kitty Lai being given the role instead of her because of Yammie not ‘behaving’ apparently she also complained about filming ancient dramas in the summer (very hot under the layers of clothing) so she was frozen by TVB for a while…I think Jessica also has that ‘rule’ of not filming ancient series in the summer unless her co star is Bobby or Chan Kam Hung (forgot his English name)…
Anyway..yes it is such a huge tragedy! At times like these, family is what you can count on but I’m not quite sure if she still has family left although I read that her best fren Yong Man Lei (a singer) is still taking care of her and Yammie lives in her Shenzhen apartment…
Thanks for the info Jasmine! That was years ago when Yammie lived in Yong Man Lei’s apartment, not sure if she still does or not though. There are times when it is hard to even count on family. My parents have always told me to be independent because even your siblings may or may not take care of you, especially after they have a family of their own. The only people that would are of course your parents, but at some point we need to take care of ourselves. Sadly, both of Yammie’s parents have passed away so she doesn’t have anyone anymore… very sad…

As for her reported strange behavior (willing to sell her body to male strangers), hmm…it is difficult to ascertain whether it did occur or not. As tabloids can make up such stories and in her troubled state, Yammie is pretty much an open target for anything the press decides to write and she is quite defenseless.
Mr. Tsang has no doubt said some unflattering things about Yammie to the press. However, according to one article that surfaced in 2006, he had asked for her hand in marriage. He strikes me as a character of questionable intent, while he is no doubt attracted to Yammie (because of her past glorious beauty) and comes across as a “collector,” he contributed to her negative public image as well. I think the pair have split ways for sure now, as Yammie is currently on welfare.

Just a very tragic story, according to one article I read, a reporter specifically said that he followed Yammie and that she talked to a bespectacled guy for quite a while until he relented and they went into a pub then karaoke together, laughed and drank together while the guy of course ran his hands over her body but the issue of sleeping together was not mentioned..perhaps that’s all she does.

Just came across Final Combat in the library, took it out and watched it. Fell with love with her character and beauty. Looked her up on the net and have been utterly shocked. Unbelievable. How far she has fallen. Feel so sad for her. Probably true about her being raped. HK film industry has no mercy towards its actresses. Hope somebody nice can help her gain back mentality and dignity.
