Yang Mi Follows Hu Ge Online, Stirs Up Old Rumors

The power of a single click on the Internet can be frightening, as actress Yang Mi (楊冪) found out when she innocently re-followed actor Hu Ge (胡歌) on Sina Weibo and found herself the subject of countless rumors and discussions.

“[Hu Ge] was the one who wanted me to follow him,” Yang Mi explained at a promotional event in Shenzhen for her upcoming movie, The Witness <我是證人>, which opens in theaters October 30. “It just so happened that a few days ago, I asked Hu Ge if he would be in Beijing on the 28th so I could invite him to the premiere ceremony for The Witness.

“He wasn’t going to be there,” she went on, “so I asked if I could trouble him to post something on Weibo when the movie came out. He then asked if I wanted to follow him first. It’s not something complicated at all, and there’s no scheming behind it.”

Yang Mi and Hu Ge first became close in 2009, when they starred together in the mainland Chinese drama, Chinese Paladin 3 <仙劍奇俠傳三>. Although they were rumored to be an item, it was later assumed that they had parted ways. Yang Mi eventually un-followed Hu Ge on Weibo when she married Hawick Lau (劉愷威) in 2013, though Hu Ge continued to follow her and even sent her blessings for her marriage and the birth of her daughter.

However, Yang Mi never followed Hu Ge back until now, which has stirred up a maelstrom of old rumors. “I never expected that everyone would make the situation blow up like this,” she said. “We have always been friends who have kept in contact.”

  1. Rubbish.

They were and still are close friends. Yang Mi is someone who keeps her friends and makes an effort and so is Hu Ge, both their friendships forged during Chinese Paladin 3. What a non news.

  2. talk about being blown out of proportion….problem of being famous.. there will be talks no matter what.

      1. @anon You think so?? i know it was a big deal in Asia when GDragon and the girl he was rumor to dating “unfollow” each other on twitter…and I thought it was funny.. but you don’t think if for say Kim Kardasian unfollow Kayne that it won’t cause some gossip here?

      2. @anon US has muuuuuuuuuuuuuch more rubbish entertainment news like this. There are constantly articles on what Kardasian (lately is their step sister, I forgot her name) is wearing, eating, farting, sleeping, partying lol!

Besides K-family, they’ll have e-news about, “No guys, Tiger Wood isn’t in Bahamas because he’s playing golf. It’s just a look alike” xD This happened during his divorce and cheating scandal.

      3. @happybi :

NOT that royalty are worth following news abouts too – overhyped humans. WHY are people so excited about a newborn PRINCE or a royal wedding?

      4. @nomad822 Depends on which royalty and whether you are a royalist. The royals news are more worthy of following, if you are a royalist. I have the deepest respect for one of the greatest woman ever lived and still living, and I am fond of her grandsons therefore am fond of her great grandchildren whose presence like entertainers, take away my worries for the milisecond when I was having such fun looking at their cute antics or reading about the family’s acts and all. If anyone is not hyped about a Prince which is a rarity these days, why should anyone be hyped about stars who are just commoners made to live like a prince? Or royalty?

      5. @anon honestly think it’s just not in Asia. im like 130% sure that anywhere around the world will have such rubbish news. although we, the viewers, call this rubbish, the paparazzi/news reporters does not care and will write anything for money.

      6. @akinu

You’re missing the point here. Of course there’s rubbish news all over the globe. My point was that there’s way more rubbish entertainment news reporting out from Asia than there is from the USA.

Like an article like this will not be reported in the USA. It’s just pathetic.

      7. @anon i hope this doesnt cause an argument but i have to disagree. everytime i go into walmart, there is a really good chance of the magazines writing rubbish things on the US celebrities on the front cover. Pretty much almost similar to this. Maybe not as much, but almost.

    1. @nori
Totally agree and I loved the whole casts’ chemistry on screen in the series so it is great to know that they are still close friends in real life. It touches me and I find it sad that many that get married seem to just drop or forget their friends. It is really nice that they are able to maintain their friendship even if any of them get married. But it is sad that some still believe or think male and females cannot be regular friends and must all be romantically linked. How old fashioned is that?

      1. @hetieshou Please read my post carefully.

I said I was feeling the divorce vibe; which means it is a hunch not so much as even a speculation based on just this one incident.
There were a lot of reports about her unhappiness for awhile. It seems her elderly meddling in-laws continue their exploits with Lau Dan intruding himself and acting as her spokesperson about her plastic surgery or lack of. This old skank should just keep quiet and watch his videos from Sire Ma.

      2. @aiya we’ll just have to wait and see if divorce is coming along the way. in the end, yang mi will just have to toughen up because she made a decision, she’ll have to live through the consequences.

  3. I am feeling the divorce vibe approaching as she seems to begin wanting to reconnect with her past life which she had sacrificed in order to marry this HK uncle and his controlling family.

    1. @aiya
Just over this you think she wants to divorce and reconnect with her old life? Honestly, even if that were the case,it would take much more than just following someone on Weibo. I think it is a bit sad that she stopped following him after getting married. Must you give up all of your friends, especially opposite sex friends just because you get married? Hu Ge seems like someone who cherishes his friendships whether they be male or female so I am glad that they can continue their friendship regardless of her martial status. I remember an artist once saying that if you cannot be with the one that you love then being good/close friends for life is not bad either. I totally agreed with that.

  4. HAHA celebrities probably don’t interact with their most intimate friends exclusively over Weibo or other public social media venues. That’s what calling and texting are for.

    1. @iampheng
Very good point, but close friends can also interact on Weibo or other public social media services in addition to calling, emailing and texting.

  5. How is following someone on Weibo even newsworthy? The netizens and media need to get their act together -.-

  6. That’s crazy! Yang Mi and Hawick are crazily in love with each other! You can see the glimmer in Hawick’s eyes whenever he talks about his wife and kids!
