Yang Mi Reveals Hawick Lau’s Marriage Proposal Was Not Romantic

Even though they are China’s top artists, Yang Mi (楊冪) and Hawick Lau (劉愷威) remain down-to-earth and find joy easily in the simple things in life. While many suspect that it must take flowers and candlelit dinners to win Yang Mi over, it turns out Hawick opted for an unromantic but ultimately very effective technique.

The power couple met in 2011 and their romance quickly progressed. Hawick’s father, actor Lau Dan (劉丹), had openly praised Yang Mi, and thinks of her as an ideal daughter-in-law. Hawick also gifted Yang Mi with homes in Hong Kong to further show his sincerity.

On November 13, 2013, Hawick and Yang Mi announced that they have registered for marriage, and later revealed plans to hold their wedding at island paradise Bali on January 8. Prior to their big day, Yang Mi made a stop in Hong Kong for work, and there she shared the details of Hawick’s marriage proposal.

Although Hawick took the time to order a custom-designed, five-karat diamond ring from South Africa, Yang Mi revealed that he did nothing special otherwise, saying that it was not romantic at all. While Yang Mi went to visit him on set one day, Hawick quietly slipped the ring onto her finger and said simply, “Once you’ve put it on, you can’t ever take it off!”

As disappointing as it may seem, Yang Mi was actually rather touched by his gesture and was pleasantly surprised. “This type of marriage proposal fits our normal lifestyle. We like to keep everything simple and are not into fancy things!”

Even so, the couple is determined to make their big day memorable. Leaving for Bali on January 7, the couple hired a decoy car to distract reporters and spoke little when surrounded at the Hong Kong International Airport. Hawick and Yang Mi’s ceremony is scheduled to be held at the five-star Bulgari Resort, at a venue that includes a floating platform over a beautiful private pond. Aside from her massive wedding ring, Yang Mi will also walk down the aisle with jewelry worth over $10 million HKD.

  1. Their proposal was simple but cute. I personally would be surprised but also touched if that ever happened to me.

  2. That nose is very distracting, lol

Anyway, congrats to them! I have a feeling that Hawick is more into Yang Mi than vice versa.

    1. I think in most if not all relationships, one tends to like the other a bit more. However, I think it is healthier and better if it were more balanced out.

    2. i like her nose, it hangs well on her face, a little pointy, but suits her well though. she’s cute

  3. yep, the proposal was simple but the ring, wedding venue, jewellery, etc. are not!!! yes, i’m super jealous of the 5 karat diamond. probably bigger than the band! but congrats to them!

  4. This woman looks heavily PREGGOS on AEU…. very generous in showing her bulging belly ahhah LOL…. thats y the rush for the wedding is it? haha…On a site note, does anyone get married first and then have a baby these days? hahaha LOL…

  5. Back to many years, when Hawick still with tvb, he is nothing but only known as Lau Dan”s son. When he dated Bernice, many ppl says he didn’t suite her. But after many years, he is so famous in mainland. Seems like its a good choice to leave tvb.

  6. haha, his proposal sounded more like lau tan’s choice of words in a family drama

  7. Simple is good and I believe she’s a good person. Congrats to them

  8. I’ve just watch Hawick and Yang Mi’s wedding on Weibo. Oh my goodness what and unromantic environment! What is the point of having a decoy escaping all the media, since it appears that there were 90 percent media and 10 percent family and friends? They had to stop and posed for the media during her father handing her off. OH lord. I guess they decided to invite the media rather than their celeb friends?? Didn’t see anyone but Tang Yan there. What do I know, I am not a celeb! Hah, I’ve seen so many more meaningful looking wedding then this! I guess the only parts that was meaningful was Lau Dan being the MC.

    1. I do not use weibo so cannot watch it. Was it that bad? Maybe they wanted as much attention as possible? They had to stop and pose for the camera when her father handed her off? Oh goodness! Reminds me of those highly publicized weddings that get aired in TV.

      1. It was camera galore!!! It didn’t seem too intimate, it just seems like a whole bunch of media hoovering them. I think the wedding would be more beautiful if it was more private. I am guessing that both Yang Mi and Hawick are the only child? Since I didn’t see anyone join them when they took photo with their parents. It was cute when Yang Mi became teary.

      2. I think Yang mi is an only child but Hawick is not an only child because I know for sure he has a younger sister. I once saw photos of his father when he was younger and his father and his wife were carrying him and his little sister when they were kids. I was a bit shocked that there weren’t any photos of his sister. I wonder if she was able to make it to the wedding?

      3. Oh yea, it was cute when she teared up. It was also touching to see Lau Dan tear up. Yang Mi is lucky to have a good father in law that likes her so much.

  9. Lucky you guys can watch it on weibo I can’t cause I don’t understand!!! Love them!! Wish them the best!!!

    1. You can still watch without understanding. Just look at the pictures and video footage.

      1. I honestly do not know, but you can ask ping0 since saw the video.

  10. Congrats to them and maybe being high profile was what they wanted.
