Weekly Box Office: “Cold War” Grosses $183 Million thumbnail

“Weekly Box Office” is a new feature at JayneStars.com, where the hottest films and ticket sales in mainland China and Hong Kong are covered. Don’t miss out on the latest blockbuster films!

In its second week of release, Cold War <寒戰> continued to dominate box office sales in both mainland China and Hong Kong. Cold War grossed $183 million RMB in China and $26.18 million HKD in Hong Kong after 11 days in theaters.

The success of Cold War is attributed to its excellent script, which throws away old formulas to give audiences the best crime thriller that has emerged from Hong Kong in the last decade since Infernal Affairs <無間道>. Strong performances from Aaron Kwok (郭富城), Tony Leung (梁家輝), Gordon Lam (林家棟), and even a guest appearance from Andy Lau (劉德華) proved irresistible. Positive word-of-mouth fueled strong box office performance that has not slowed down since its initial week.

Following the success of Tai Chi Zero <太極1從零開始>, Stephen Fung’s (馮德倫) second installment in the film franchise, Tai Chi Hero <太極2英雄崛起>, was released only one month later in October. The strategy in timing the release dates closely together worked, as audiences flocked to theaters to see the martial arts film with little interruption. Tai Chi Hero passed the $118 million RMB mark in the week ending November 18, 2012.

In Hong Kong theaters, Triad <紮職> debuted in third place with cumulative gross of $1.69 million HKD. William Chan (陳偉霆) portrays a triad member who is eager to become the next mafia boss. Challenging him is Irene Wan (溫碧霞), who portrays the widow of the gangster that William had murdered. Patrick Tam (譚耀文) and Lam Lei (林利) make appearances as triads.
