“Awfully Lawful” Ratings Drop After Strong Premiere

Though the premiere ratings for Roger Kwok’s (郭晉安) Awfully Lawful <熟男有惑> debuted to a strong viewership rating of 29 points last Monday, ratings dropped significantly throughout the week. On Friday, ratings fell to 25 points. The average rating for the first broadcast week of Awfully Lawful was 26 points, with approximately 1.67 million viewers.

TVB’s fantasy drama A Change of Heart <好心作怪>, which had just completed its third broadcast week, peaked to 29 points on Monday and Thursday and dropped to 26 points on Friday. The Michael Miu (苗僑偉) and Bosco Wong (黃宗澤) drama averaged to 27 points last week, with 1.73 million viewers.

The sitcom Come Home Love <愛·回家> stayed at a consistent 24 rating points, with 1.54 million viewers, throughout the week, and peaked at 27 points on Monday. The variety dating show Bachelors at War <求愛大作戰>, however, finished off last week as one of the lowest-rated shows on the prime-time slot, with 18 rating points.

Awfully Lawful received more than 90 filed complaints from viewers. The complainers expressed that the show was mocking Korean actresses when the character Ugly Betty, portrayed by Bella Lam (林穎彤), pulled out a photo of popular K-pop girl group Girls’ Generation and told her boss that she want to take a few months off to get plastic surgery in Korea.

Bachelors at War drew in 22 complaints. Viewers felt that the show promoted wrong values to the audience. These viewers also opposed the show’s usage of “morally offensive” vocabulary.

A Change of Heart received only one complaint, which was about the drama’s lack of originality.

Viewers also found it amusing, although unsurprisingly, that Eileen Yeow (姚瑩瑩) made in appearances in all three TVB dramas this week. She portrays the law firm owner Amanda, a series regular, in the sitcom Come Home Love; a solicitor in Awfully Lawful; and a guest appearance as the boss of Elaine Yiu’s (姚子羚) character, Wing, in A Change of Heart.

  1. It looks like Awfully Lawful’s ratings might bounce back up since Monday’s episode got 30 points. I think it’s a good series with lots of interesting characters and it looks like the storyline is picking up with Raymond Cho’s character mysteriously leaving.

  2. I’m actually loving all four pairs’ storylines. And the office fashion! Will definitely continue supporting

  3. Notwithstanding all the allegations of plagarism, I found myself enjoying this series for what it is worth; which isn’t much. I find some characters so silly, I find some storyline too foreful and impossible and I still don’t get what is wrong with TVB with its 15 minutes of 100% comedy, 15min of 100% grave seriousness and the rest being inconsequential of everything else. The continuation sucks big time. And the costume? Sorry to say, reminds me a lot of k-dramas especially the colourful jackets, dark leggings, etc.

Suffice to say I do not like Gentleman’s Dignity but so far if this is gonna be as inconsistent, I will treat it as light viewing but it won’t make an impact.

Why can’t they make a proper series about 4 experienced bachelor lawyers? Where is TOT when I need it?!

    1. agree, this serie such, achange of heart is much better.

  4. But last night’s ratings averaged at 30 points。

  5. At first I am kind of iffy with the creation of HKTV. I’ve been an avid fan of TVB, but recently, NONE of their TV series are interesting. A Change of Heart is an exception because the storyline is getting better imo. TVB is lacking their originality and is getting repetitive ALL THE TIME. I am getting tired of it and it’s not what it used to be anymore. In Come Home Love, episode 286, the actress who played the granddaughter of the cancer grandfather… this is like her 4th time appearing in the show with a different role… I know TVB is lacking a lot of potential artists… but even the supporting casts as well? how disappointing, TVB… smh…

  6. A change of heart got a complaint for lack of originality? Seriously? It’s like they ran out of things to complain about. They should try watching Korean dramas they have LOTS of lack of originality! Rich man meets poor plucky girl blah blah blah!

    1. Hahaha or taiwanese drama, those suck too if have to pick taiwanese wins over since they are just stupid IDOL dramas. Kdrama is NOT any better cuz they do tend to flow w/2 handsome guys and 2 pretty woman as leads and storyline is always been there and done that. The best Kdrama i have ever watched is called ‘ OJAKGYO BROTHERS’ that one is LOL funny and none of that crap handsome rich man meets poor pretty girl… hahaa LOL..

      1. I agree that Korean modern dramas are as one note as it gets… besides the rich man/poor woman predilection, don’t forget those god-awful ‘older woman’ dramas that are churned out year after year to feed the fantasies of bored housewives. The period pieces tend to be better on the whole but can be dry for those who don’t know/value Korean history. In contrast, Tw dramas don’t take themselves all that seriously so they can be harmless fun.

      2. -Lee,

hahaha LOL god-awful ‘older woman’ dramas LOL..tell u the truth, i rarely watched any kdrama except above i mentioned “OJAKGYO BROTHERS” which was the longest and best i have ever watched from korea aside from City Hunter which was also OK since I like a bit action so I can be biased. Hahah but u r so right on the older women, they have alot of those which my mom wouldn’t even watched hahaha.. but u know what’s even more suprising, the way they pair up older women/younger men in so many of their series right, some like 10 years older than the male leads which i don’t think we see it in any other countries w/leads. It’s kind of weird to watch when esp if the women looks like a aunt/mom next to these boyband leads hahaa… that is totally weird.
Taiwan – harmeless but also pointless to watch IMO of course… 🙂

      3. @ windy,

I have no problem watching the occasional age gap drama (I’m all for loving whoever you want, society be damned) but the Koreans do SO MANY of them that it’s legitimately ridiculous. Plus, 95% of them have couples w/ no chemistry whatsoever and 16-20 episodes of pointless histrionics that keep them apart.

Re: the weird casting in Kdramas, it’s mostly because there are very few young Korean actresses who are actually given a shot to develop their careers these days (only Han Hyo Joo can legitimately be considered a top star and maybe Park Bo Young in the future) whereas most of the actors who do dramas regularly are the idol boy toys du jour that the aforementioned housewives fantasize about. So it’s a perfect storm of too many old actresses + too many young actors in the drama industry. I also think that producers prefer to use older actresses because they may be less threatening for viewers – I guess watching a gorgeous young thing get the guy of her dreams may be a bit stale for them.

Anyways, that’s the main reason why you see so many terrible pairings in K-dramas… like Choi Kang Hee/Joo Won and Kim Hee Sun/Lee Min Ho.

      4. -Lee,
OMG, Choi Kang Hee/Joo Won funny you mentioned him b/c I just found out about him thru ‘Ojakgyo Brothers’ series and I thought he was great in there even thou it was an old series cuz I just found out about it last month, OMG…His paired up w/UEE was awesome in this older series but recently he was paired up w/this 10 years older woman??? I mean seriously, is it my eyes only or that woman looks like his aunt/mom? hahahaha WTH were they thinking? Lee Min Ho – tell u truth, the woman he paired up with is still HOT n SEXY IMO hahah n I don’t think LMH looks that young so that actually works but some just looks completely utterly RIDICULOUS. Had to goggle the other actresses since those names don’t ring a bell at all.

  7. i wanna punch johnson lee coz yeung sui! very very bad movie.

  8. It was shot in winter …n now it 35c …I feel hot
When seeing the cast wearing winter clothes …cant tvb give us the season look….

  9. this series lack movement, just seem like it’s a normal life to all of them…nothing exciting but i’ll keep watching it.

  10. Why do people complain it look like some korean drama. most series and movies are based on books, myth ,historys, other series, stories or something. I dont really care that it look like some korean drama.

  11. I like all the current series. Really enjoy Change of Heart. HK viewer complain about everything.

  12. HK viewer are hard to please. TVB should base their drama back on novels.

  13. New episode last night where a scene totally unconnected to the scene before or after was a blatant copy from Gentleman’s Dignity and it wasn’t even good in the original anyway. I should find that scene offensive but I was offended by the nonsense as in zero value in that scene.

  14. Boringggggg………………….. YAWN!!!!!

  15. surprise this series drop in ratings since there are many praises for selena’s acting and the premier was good rating wise.

tvb is suffering with the low ratings. can’t wait for triumph 2 amazing summer now!

  16. I think i am one of the few people out there that actually enjoy awfully lawful. I love the lives of these 4 men with different personalities and I love selena li. Elsa is so cute. I love her fashion, princess attitude, etc

  17. I’m loving this series too. Don’t dislike any of the characters yet but I’m definitely loving Selena, Roger and Grace! 😀

  18. I haven’t seen any of the show, but wanted to say that I really like that photo of Sharon they used for the story. Great picture.

  19. I don’t know why the ratings drop. Just started watching ‘Awfully Lawful’ and has now watch until episode 7. I enjoyed watching the series very much. It’s hilarious and fun to watch. It’s not a realistic series. The director/scriptwriter chose to go the exaggeration route to create humour, but, it works for me.
