Ben Wong Hopes to Film “Raising the Bar” Sequel

Raising the Bar <四個女仔三個Bar> recently aired to positive reviews and moderate ratings. Having been friends for many years, Elaine Yiu (姚子羚) and Ben Wong (黃智賢) displayed much compatibility in portraying a married couple in the series.

While Ben and Elaine had starred in many series together, Raising the Bar was the first time they were paired romantically. They said, “We’ve known each other for many years and are quite familiar with each other, so we didn’t have any problems with chemistry. By the middle of filming, we understood each other’s wants without words being exchanged.”

Elaine and Ben both expressed that the most difficult onscreen moments were with their 13-year-old son in the series. Although Ben is not a stranger to fatherly roles, this was the first time Ben had a teenager son in a series. Elaine added, “There was a scene where I had to yell at him until he cried. In an earlier scene, he couldn’t get his tears out. I rehearsed with him for a long time and found out that his grandfather dotes on him a lot, so I asked him how he would feel if his grandfather didn’t care about him. He was able to cry then.”

Outlooks for the Year of the Sheep

Due to the positive reception of Raising the Bar, Ben expressed that he would like to film a sequel. “I really like my character and the script is very well-written. Many fans online have also praised that the legal knowledge is very rich and detailed.”

Currently still single, Elaine was teased whether she hopes to follow the footsteps of her good friend, Myolie Wu (胡杏兒), and find her significant other this year. Elaine laughed and replied, “I wish! Her boyfriend is a good man and I’m very happy for her! But it is not up to me. It is up to fate.”

  1. Oh yess!! I still feel that more can be told about the lives of the 4 female lawyers. I miss them so much, especially chris and lincoln, and I always get strength from watching them work hard in their jobs.

  2. this is actually a pretty good show surprisingly. the title sounds weird and lame but after watching an episode, i was hooked. there is definitely potential for a sequel. the cases they talk about are pretty interesting and the problems they face are pretty realistic too.

  3. “displayed much compatibility in portraying a married couple in the series.”

80% of the series she was thinking of cheating on him, with the last punch in the face where she thinks of her lost true love as her husband and son was playing in the sea. Elaine should protest; she is always playing dissatisfied wives.

    1. P/S Love the young teenage actor. Very convincing.

      1. yeah … the teenage boy is very convincing. TVB shld groom him.

    2. She always gets the crappy roles, originally I thought she might to portray something new but nope!

I liked how the legal aspect was done this time around.

I disliked how so much time was dedicated to people staring and flirting when they could’ve dedicated more time towards a built up ending and flesh it out.

Didn’t need Giselle and Quinton dragging it on and on, more time portraying their studies or interaction when dealing with the cases they’re apart of would’ve been nice. Giselle was set up in the “compensated dating” case to go emo I guess, her character went down the toilet near the end. Holly honestly looked like a better match for Quinton.

Needed more Duncan and Ashley, I think Duncan had the best interactions in the series with everybody he came across on screen.

Other girls could’ve used more time, again, too much time wasted when they could’ve boosted the short stories given to each girl before writing them off. Never Dance Alone did a good job of sharing the pie.

I would like a sequel if they focus more on legality next time. I wouldn’t want a sequel because TVB usually runs them into the ground and ruins it entirely.

    3. What happened to her and the other guy? After the car accident she just left and they never talk about them again. Did I miss something?

      1. Essentially, she committed adultery and the car crash helped wake her up from her infidelity. And as a result, she went back to her family.

  4. Raising Bar was a pretty good drama…
Yes, a sequel would be nice for Raising Bar… It shouldn’t be that hard.

  5. I love this drama, more grace n Louis, also Ben Ids very good actor, I didnt even know Stephanie is a prepretty good golfer too, very talented hope to see her more.

  6. anyone else realised that the prison case led by Duncan was never solved?

    1. I realised that too. I watched that episode for the second time just to make sure I did not miss anything. But true enough, the case was left hanging. Is it on purpose?

      1. Oh yeah the young man accused of beating when it was the warden! Yeap, no verdict. No ending. I think it stopped short of our guy cross examining the warden.

      2. That wasn’t the only thing left un-finished. I didn’t even notice that one, thanks for pointing it out

  7. Elaine always have these roles probably coz she does have that look in her and she does protray that role quite convincingly.

  8. Actually I liked the cheating part. It make sense, as she portrayed a beautiful and talented wife with a telented husband. But no time for fun at all, and work comes in first for the family. She had mental affairs, but come to sense before anything physical happened. That’s why her hubby willingly take her back and amend the relationship.

As for Gisele and Quinton, it’s the worst relationship at the end. He did nothing for her and was not there for her when her mom is in trouble, and after 1 year, Gisele just jump to him?? Like wtf… they looked compatability and sweet in the beginning, but the ending part just sucks!!

    1. “She had mental affairs, but come to sense before anything physical happened.”

Well she did everything but sex. That’s cheating to me, and worse is he is her true love. Sick ending man!

I think Quinton did enough for Gisele as her emotional pillar. Gisele had wanted to be with him but the timing wasn;t right. Maybe it wasn’t written or portrayed well, there was a time because if Li Dan she became a recluse, avoided people because she had issues. I have no problem with the ending. I like the fact she embrace his weirdness, rather cute. And that pillow is weird.

      1. She did everything but sex vs they did nothing but sex. Which is worse?? At least she realised the important of family before it was too late. But the ending was quite abrupt. It will be good to see how they rebuild their family.

      2. Depends. Whether you’re a man or a woman.

The ending wasn’t abrupt. It was more like husband is in denial and wife forever remembers her lost love but decided to stick with her family and appreciates her husband. The change came too sudden since it was ending. Too much time has been spent on her story needlessly.

Poor book store owner. Kinda pity him.

      3. She cheated on her husband by lying about going on a trip to spend days with another man far away where no one knows them. Holding hands, kissing, spending time together alone in the house. It is assumed that they had sex without any need to show the sex scenes. Any adult viewers would know that’s what happened.

      4. No lar they didn’t have sex. See the accident scene, they were rushing to you know, complete the deed, passionate and all.

  9. To me, TVB has “raised the bar”for its production standards with this drama. There was none of the over-dramatization by the characters and their stories nor the plots and sub-plots predictability that we too often see in TVB dramas. Instead there are lots of subtleties and nuances which gave it a Hollywood feel. It is good to see TVB departing from its typical format. There was also a large dose of realism which explains the many silent loose ends as life is really like that isn’t? The four new girls did an outstanding job, they were watchable and likable. So did the veteran actors/actresses. They added maturity and intellectualism. But I found Louis Cheung to be somewhat out of place here. Not so much for his acting but rather his looks. Somehow he didn’t look that part. Perhaps a better looking and younger actor would have been more compatible for Grace Chan. This is just a small point though. If TVB takes the cue from the drama and heads towards this direction, then there is new hope. I really hope it does, if not we will get same old same old from Linda Chung and Kate Tsui. Yucks!

    1. Louis the right age. He is supposed to be much older I think because he worked 10 years, graduated as engineer, even if he studied and worked or worked and studied, he should be early to mid 30s.

  10. weird ending, the worst choice was his protege “act” over heart, send the diary to her parents.

Louis is okay lead, Marcus career basically was done, the content of the dairy is not mention, I believe? Then, only give Marcus a personal closure

Could be better if Marcus fall for Giselle or something, haha

  11. Just finished watching this – surprisingly good especially with 4 newbies.
The only character I didn’t like was Stephanie Ho (Fa) – I thought she was really bad – incredibly childlike, always speaking in a high pitched child like voice – I found her incredibly irritating. Even her crying scenes grated on me, they sounded so fake.

I like Gisele at first, but thought her actions at the end were incredibly stupid – how can you be a lawyer if you’re so emotional about the case? And it took Quinton and her about 1000 years to get together – I hate it when a man cannot make a fricking decision! hahah

I actually thought Ashley and Duncan were the best pairing – they were especially cute when she got pregnant. :p

All in all a good series. I enjoyed :p

    1. TVB got it wrong when it always shows lawyers as rational calm and able to be so distant. They’re human too. The person who died was Gisele’s friend and she had issues herself. I disagree with the whole privacy thing when a person’s good name is at risk and to place the trust on the nobleness of the parents is to me just a slap across the face of justice. But I get her behaviour.

Quinton made his decision, Giselle who has trust issues couldn’t.

      1. Hmm..yeh I guess so…

I think Giselle annoyed me at the end because – yes – Li Dan was her friend – but she should also know what her mentor’s personality was like.
She said – Yes I know Marcus, but there are many sides to a person. Why couldn’t she apply that same rationale to Li Dan?
There was one scene where she said something about “I only believe in the evidence” but as far as I knew – there wasn’t any solid evidence to support Li Dan’s accusations, it was only Li Dan’s one sided viewpoint.
Plus – she accused Marcus 3 times and all 3 times – he was found innocent – surely Giselle should have stopped and thought about that. As well as finding out Li Dan had not taken her medication and then finding out she had actually lied about her parents dying. Surely that would have been a big warning sign to Giselle – if you can lie about your parents dying – you can pretty much lie about anything.

Yes – it was Giselle who was faffing about the relationship! Apologies to Quinton, haha… :p
I wonder why she had trust issues – as far as I knew she wasn’t cheated on by a previous boyfriend or anything…

Hmmm….anyway – waiting for the next good series now! Any recommendations? I actually watched The Virtuous Queen of Han based on your review!

      2. How do you find the series? Gets better as it goes along. Right now I am having a nightly affair with 2 gorgeous men without knowing how it will end. If that’s your cup of tea I recommend eye in the sky.

      3. Yeh – waiting for a few more eye in the sky eps to be aired – then can binge watch ;p

I liked the Queen of Han – I don’t normally watch china dramas, never know which one to pick and some of them are so long! haha

I agreed with a lot of your comments in your review – especially the one about Duan Hong having a face you wanted to punch! hahahha – So true….

If you have any other recommendations for china dramas let me know! 🙂

  12. Yes, indeed, ‘two gorgeous men’, Funn, and it’s Tavia who has the onus (pleasure?) to choose her Mr. Right. Btw I did enjoy watching Raising the Bar although I was put off by the title at first. A sequel would be nice. A second time round would show off their acting skills or the lack of them more.
