“Bu Bu Jing Qing” Shocks Viewers with New Trailer

Nineteen days before its broadcast on April 22, Bu Bu Jing Qing <步步驚情> released a 90-second preview with some never-before-seen clips. Viewers were shocked by many scenes, including one in which female lead Cecilia Liu (劉詩詩), who is known for her gentle disposition, acts like a cold-hearted female assassin.

A modern-day sequel to the time-traveling drama Bu Bu Jing Xin <步步驚心>, the upcoming Bu Bu Jing Qing stars Cecilia as Zhang Xiao, who had previously traveled back to the Qing Dynasty and taken on the persona of Maertai Ruoxi. During the filming of Bu Bu Jing Qing, it was rumored that Cecilia would be playing more than one role, though reports varied on how her characters were related.

Upon seeing Cecilia in the latest preview, many viewers contacted Chinese Entertainment Shanghai, the drama’s production company, to ask if the actress was portraying a villain or if her character had simply undergone a drastic change in personality. They raised questions regarding other scenes as well, such as when male lead Nicky Wu (吳奇隆) gets handcuffed and when Sun Yizhou (孫藝洲) rises out of the mud like a zombie. In response, Chinese Entertainment Shanghai said that all of their inquiries would be answered after the series begins airing on April 22.

Sharp-eyed fans also noticed the preview’s focus on two particular props: Emperor Yongzheng’s ornamental ring and Maertai Ruoxi’s magnolia hairpin, both of which played an important part in the prequel, Bu Bu Jing Xin. Additionally, the magnolia flower is a recurring theme throughout the preview, appearing in a set of earrings, a drawing, and a tattoo. However, the video ultimately introduces more questions than it answers, and viewers will have to wait until April 22 to see how the ring and the hairpin tie into the story.
