Charlene Choi Sustains Injuries from Diving Show

Zhejiang TV’s Splash! <中国星跳跃> program is once again raising health concerns for its contestants after another celebrity sustained an injury while participating in the reality competition.

Charlene Choi (蔡卓妍) is the latest celebrity reported to have suffered from a diving-related injury for the show. The actress-singer reportedly lost control of her jump and her belly flopped into the Olympic-size diving pool, which added more stress and tension to her already-injured lower back.

Splash! is a television reality competition series that follows celebrities mastering the art of Olympic diving. Each contestant is given one month to learn the basics of diving through a professional trainer. They are then required to perform their learned talent each week in front of a panel of judges and a live audience. The show originated from the Netherlands and has since spawned nine other international versions since its conception in 2012.

Charlene, competing as a Hong Kong delegate, joined the show in early April and successfully passed the first round. On her second round, which was filmed on April 21, Charlene miscalculated her dive and her belly flopped into the pool. Charlene won some sympathy points from the audience and the judges for her efforts, and she passed the second round; however, the belly flop added even more stress to her already-injured lower back. Charlene also reportedly suffered bruises on her forehead.

The physician for China’s national diving team expressed that if Charlene were to continue competing, she would face a higher risk of dislocating her lumbar vertebrae, which can result in paralysis.

Charlene’s fans left over 3,000 comments on her Weibo to convince Charlene to leave the diving program. Her mother also expressed great worry for her health and urged Charlene to return home. The producers of Splash! suggested Charlene to withdraw from the competition, but the Twins member insisted to stay to complete the competition.

“Thanks for your love and concerns,” posted Charlene on her Weibo last week. “Diving is a great experience, and I really want to challenge my limits.” Charlene added that she found it “both satisfying and successful” for being able to overcome fears after learning the diving art from scratch.

Celebrities are paid up to a six to seven figure sum to participate in the show, and ratings for Splash! had been consistently high in mainland China. Charlene said, “Some are saying that I am risking my life for the money… I am not that rich, but I am not to the point where I need to sell my life for money, haha! I am doing the diving program for charity. I will donate all the money!”

Charlene is the not the only contestant who has sustained injuries from diving. Earlier in the season, Han Geng (韩庚) injured his upper palate, which was due to him without fully closing his mouth when he submerged into the water. He also fell unconscious for ten seconds when he impacted in the water after performing a handstand dive. Last week Peng Jiaxuan, an assistant to contestant Shi Xiaolong (釋小龍), drowned in a pool during a training session.

  1. She have my admiration for wanting to continue on for charity sake but honestly if I heard the word “paralysis” then withdrawal would be the next step for me.
There are so many ways she can help others but she only have one body so it best take care of it while still young.

    1. Sometimes, it really is a joke when these completely “non-athletic” celebrities try to do these atheletic things for money……most of them are doing these celebrity shows in China because of the easy money and large audience….HK would never be creative enough to do these things, cause HK celebrities alone, doing diving would be more of a comedy than anything else.

I once saw Charlene in an Adidas poster advertising for their sports clothes and that was even a bigger joke……..Adidas opt for a popular face and used Charlene even though she is the most un-athletic celebrity in town and also lacking a sporty physique………

There’s got to be some real sporty celebrities out there for shows like these but Charlene is definitely not one of them……..

      1. Totally agree and not to mention she looks awfully flat-chested in a bathing suit……she should hide her weak areas and not bounce around in a bathing suit…..better to cover up that flat chest………hahaahahha……..

      2. any girl who use sport bra will decrease their cup size.

      3. I don’t think Charlene needs a sports bra…..it doesn’t come in such a small size and sports bra are only for women with some boobs….Charlene is completely flat.

      4. i want to see her ‘flat chest’.. i want to see her in swim suit,.where’s the website?

  2. OMGoshhh!!
    I just can’t believe my eyes @@!!
Saw BN’s banner on Jaynestars!! Hahahahas!

    1. BN’s banner? can’t stand them, that’s my money, i don’t want to pay taxes for bn candidates political career, also am not keen on paying for the malays (children) to go uni for free while i worry if i have enough for mine to go to one, doing bis for nothing, housing that’s super cheap.. and they (the malays) are still not satisfied, they want to ask for more from the govt, they think its all (the money) from the govt, that’s what the govt are doing/telling them.. ‘kerajaan boleh kasi’ which ‘means govt can give’, bull S, all the money come tax payers monies and more than 90% of taxes come from the chinese

    2. Install adblock app, like me ahaha
      Cant see a thing~

      1. Hahahas! I’m just shocked xD
This a entertainment gossip site and we are from all over the world, not a site from Malaysia, so it’s really a WAHHHH to see a BN banner here!! Hahas!

  3. And back to this topic, ishhh! She and other celebrities should’ve withdrawn from this contest and this contest should be banned!!

I agreed with Anthony Wong 😉

In view of the recent death at the diving show, Anthony Wong blasted the programme on his Weibo, and wrote, “Now something has finally happened at the diving programme that plays with people’s lives. Did they ever think about it properly? They might as well suggest that the celebrities jump down from a building to boost the ratings.”

In an interview that was held subsequently, the 51-year-old actor clarified on his Weibo statement, and said, “I wasn’t intentionally trying to interfere with the programme’s production. I just felt that the show was very dangerous and placed the celebrities in danger.”

Claiming that the safety measures were not sufficient might have been the reason for the tragedy, he added, “They might as well lay some air cushions on the ground and asked the celebrities to jump from a 10-floor building. If anyone can dive after training for two weeks, why did Tian Liang (former Chinese diver) have to go through years of training?”

  4. Charlene should withdraw from the show. I admire her for facing her fear and diving for charity but the risk is too big. The show seriously wants to keep her on because she is the biggest celebrity and drawn the most attention on the show but they are putting a person’s life in danger for ratings.

  5. I am sick of all these reality shows popping up on t.v.The only reality show I watch is the amazing race.Tv shows have gone downhill in recent times however am looking forward to Arrow.

  6. It’s her life. She can do whatever she wants. However if she gets seriously injured, she can only blame herself. Better a little caution than a great regret later on.

  7. I really don’t think it’s worth taking the risk to “challenge limitis” and for “charity”. There are different ways for her to challenger her limitis and do charity. Not risk her life. Paralysis is serious! Come on, Charlene. Withdraw before it’s too late!

  8. lolz the only think i want to know is how much insurance did she take out for this show? if she does gravely injures herself, whatever, at least she walks away with a pot of money……

  9. Indeed a no brainer show. Anthony Wong was right. Any sane would think likewise.

  10. think she’s upset about something in her life. diving is her only way to paralyze herself.

  11. She can quit and she should. She is in no need of the money. She doesn’t need the publicity. So she must be insisting due to personal insistence. If she is paralysed, who does she blame? So my only conclusion is her injury is not as serious as the media makes it out to be.

As for making celebrities participating in events that require years of training is not only dangerous but irresponsible.
