Grace Chan’s Rape Scene in “Overachievers”

Grace Chan (陳凱琳) is already nominated for two TVB Anniversary Awards although she has only been in the industry for a year. With her role in Overachievers <名門暗戰>, Grace is competing for Most Improved Actress and Best Supporting Actress awards against hot contenders, Samantha Ko (高海寧) and Sharon Chan (陳敏之) respectively.

Grace Chan Overachievers 2While Grace’s role in Overachievers may initially not appear to be a breakthrough role, she has an upcoming rape scene which will allow her to showcase her acting range. This scene alone is speculated to increase her chances at winning an award.

Grace’s character falls in love with Raymond Wong (黃浩然) despite knowing he will never return her feelings. Unable to forget him, Grace nevertheless begins to date a doctor at her hospital, portrayed by Gary Tam (譚偉權). After she realized Gary was obsessive and controlling, Abby tried to break off the relationship but was unsuccessful in doing so. Gary drugged Grace and attempted to rape her at his apartment. Raymond rushed to the scene to save Grace.

Since Grace and Gary are both Christians, they discussed the scene beforehand to avoid awkwardness. As a newcomer, Grace was unsure how to get into character for the rape scene. Fortunately, Grace received encouragement from the producer and was able to overcome the challenges. Unafraid that the rape scene would tarnish her clean image, Grace said it is more important to put all her efforts in doing a good job rather than worrying about her Miss Hong Kong image.

Surprised at her double nomination this year, Grace exclaimed, “It’s very sudden! I’m very thankful that I’m nominated. Good luck to everyone who was nominated.”

    1. Agreed. If she wins, it means she CLEARLY has a strong ‘back stage’. She is certainly doing well with her respective part as a newbie but she is still green. Her winning over Sharon Chan would be a huge ***.

Btw, Grace looks very pretty in the second photo.

  1. Oh please…if she wins, then it’s clear she played her cards well.

    1. Don’t know which is worse, Grace winning or Sharon winning!

  2. hahaha, most improved over what? BSA too? Tvb tsk tsk! Too much blatant favoritism!

  3. Grading her acting range/award chances by her rape scene…. ROFL

  4. how can she improve when there’s nothing to compare her acting to? one rape scene in exchange for two nominations…..
and she’s being way too overly promoted, i don’t like her or sisley, much prefer Moon Lau, hope the lawywer series next year will give some attention to Moon!

    1. LOL totally agree. How the heck did she even get nominated for Most Improved…

  5. Random but, I always thought Grace was pretty until I saw her acting in this drama. I mean, she’s still pretty but…the hype about her beauty was kind of, over exaggerating. I kind of like Sisley’s features though. There was this scene where she was wearing olden days clothing and I thought she had a really pretty face. Needs improvements on her acting though.

Anyways, I think it’s ridiculous if she won the Most Improved Actress award, even though she was decent in this drama. Should be awarded to those who actually acted in multiple dramas and viewers witnessing their improvements. I actually hope Samantha win. Sharon’s acting is…well, still needs a lot more improvement. I’d say even Grace is better than her. As for Best Supporting Actress, there are better nominees too.

    1. Agree. I find Grace not very pretty at all. Too skinny even on the face. Sisley is quite pretty. In can picture her in olden days drama and and would look good. Acting wise both are good as first timers but not good enough for awards. As for being nominated, if you see the nomination list almost everyone you can imagine and every drama is nominated. It’s almost embarrassing .. as though everyone is mention to avoid fallout.

      1. I feel the same towards Grace. I actually thought she was quite pretty and ok when she was competing in the pageant show. I guess it was because of all the hype and all about her beauty or maybe it’s because of the makeup she had when she was competing for Miss HK. Somehow she looks different in the drama than she did in the pageant show. Maybe because she has lighter makeup on in this drama? But yeah the more I watch her in the drama, the less attractive I find her to be. Something about her eyes being a bit odd and her chin is too sharp and pointy like a witch or something. And she really does look Indian in the drama…I’m very convinced she’s not Chinese as she claims she is. Her facial features really show otherwise.

    2. I always thought Grace’s beauty to be overrated. People make her out to be very beautiful since the start of the pageant, but, I just found her to have average Indian girl look. So, I was rooting more for Sisley Choi at the finals. I find Sisley prettier.

      1. I didn’t find Sisley Choi all that attractive when she was competing for Miss HK but I do find her more slightly attractive after seeing her in this drama. She definitely has a unique charm to her. I find acting wise she’s better than Grace. Grace tries too hard in her acting to kind of stand out that it’s a pain to watch and she’s very unnatural in some scenes. She needs a lot work in her acting. Sisley Choi needs more work too but at least she’s more natural than Grace. In her emotional scenes with Edwin, she actually shows emotions and sadness. Grace on on the other hand just shows sad face but no emotions…she’s soo wooden. -_-

  6. Why is grace gettng an award already mygosh tvb is really asking for it they donnt know how to cherish artist that can act no wonder there all leaving!!! can’t blame them

  7. She’s a good new actress, keep up the good work! Same goes to Samantha Ko and Eliza Sam

  8. If she wins either one of those, it’ll be a slap in the face for the other nominees…

  9. yeah! i’m so proud of grace Chan!!!!!!! well my opinion is that she is not bad at overachievers!!! and i really hope that she would either get of those awards!!!

  10. Grace Chan & Sisly Choi is promoted too fast by TVB , UNFAIR !!! , Their acting skill is so so nothing great !Should gave more chances to Eliza Sum , acting is better .
Conclusion the best is still Charmaine , followed by Myolie

  11. I think Graces acting is not bad actually, I like her acting, but the way how she only had 1 drama broadcasting and she’s nominated for best supporting actress and most improved is kinda not fair to the other contestees, nonetheless she was also miss HK in 2013, and has minimal experience in the acting scene, I mean if she gets nominated later in her career I would understand but I feel like right now with only 1 drama I don’t think she should be getting either 2 awards/nominations

  12. tvb must be blind to nominate grace chan.
tracy chu is much better than her.

  13. Shes doing rather well. No need rape scene. I find her rather good for a newcomer.

  14. This is her first drama right? How can she be most improved if theres no previous acting attempts to compare too? Hosting shows do not count as that doesnt require u to act.

  15. I don’t understand why rape scenes are such a rite of passage for TVB actresses.
Is this a reflection of the HK society in general? Cringe!

  16. I think her acting is not bad but quite stiff. I don’t know if it’s just me but did anyone notice that during many of Grace’s scene she tends to look down a lot. I was thinking she was probably looking at her lines.

  17. Grace is okay at acting but i don’t think she has the ability to be nominated for Most Improved Actress and Best Supporting Actress awards.

  18. If the rape scene in the one bringing in the nominated, Gary Tam should be the one getting nomination. He’s the one doing all the work. Grace’s character was drugged. No need to do much.

    1. Kidd,
I’m sure there is a lot of after-rape crying and emotional trauma that Grace Chan has to show. She has a really energetic presence and cheerful smile, but needs to show more acting range as leading lady status. Perhaps Ruco Chan will be able to give her some good pointers in their new drama “Captain of Destiny”.

      1. I don’t get the criticisms on Grace as an actress. I thought she did very well for a newcomer, controlled performance, pretty much consistent. On the other hand is it Sisley? Anyway I cringe when she was praised for her impersonation of Anita Mui and frankly that was her worst moment. Grace looks very polished for a newcomer and I don’t know about her other series but in here she is pretty much surrounded by veterans everywhere and she held her own. She did very very well, quite a natural when she tone down her perkiness. If she needs any pointers, she could have asked Power Chan, Raymond Cho, Maggie Siu, Raymond Wong, Wayne Lai, Elliot Ngok, Susanna Kwan, basically EVERYONE except Edwin Siu and of course Jason Chan who did ok for his standard. Ruco can’t teach her more than any of the named super veterans.

      2. Just saw the scene.’VERY violent and was that stunt double? Raw acting but I am not complaining. Rather impressed.

      3. Funn,
Yes there was a stunt double used for the scene. I didn’t get to see the scene, but did see Grace’s cheerful acting in earlier episodes.

  19. Grace did well in this scene and the emotional scenes afterwards. Her crying scenes are not cringe-worthy, unlike some other well-established actresses whose name I shall not mention.

  20. Good acting? Good looks?? Grace Chan-dra? WTH? Why is this hideous “Chinese” over-actor getting so much fanfare? Looks like she’s intimately connected with some HK entertainment powerbrokers. Calling her acting good tells me more of how people are smitten by her exotic Indian look & the low standards used on “prettier” actresses possessing only 2-3 expressions.

  21. Personally, I think Grace is doing an exceedingly good job at acting for a newbie. In Overachievers, the hospital scene where she goes crazy over the thought of killing someone is portrayed very well.
I think the fact not many viewers like Grace and Sisley is all down to TVB. Promoting them way too fast and not allowing us to slowly adapt to them making us think these girls acting skills must be at the standard of someone whose been in the industry for years, so when they don’t deliver, we are slightly disappointed.
But all in all, I think Grace is doing great, and if she carries on doing what she’s doing, she’ll be in this industry for years to come!

  22. I think as a newbie, grace is doing really well(way better than sisley) I began to become a fan of her! Of course her role is quite prominent
She can act the feeling of collapsed
