Hawick Lau and Tiffany Tang Fight against Fate in “Lady and the Liar”

Lady and the Liar <千金女賊>, an upcoming mainland Chinese period drama starring Hawick Lau (劉愷威) and Tiffany Tang (唐嫣), recently unveiled its first video preview, revealing a darker edge amid the drama’s lavish costumes and sets.

Set in 1930s Shanghai, Lady and the Liar tells the complicated story of Jiang Xin (Tiffany Tang), the long-lost daughter of the wealthy Ye family. During a train ride, she meets fellow traveler Du Xiaohan (Yang Rong 楊蓉), who is actually a thief recently escaped from prison. When a train accident occurs, Xiaohan deliberately allows Jiang Xin to fall to her doom and then assumes her identity.

However, Xiaohan is unable to fool Jiang Xin’s previous lover, Sheng Jiewen (Tony Yang 楊佑寧), who heads out to search for her. Having lost her memories after her fall, Jiang Xin is now convinced she is the fiancée of mafia boss Bai Zhengji (Hawick Lau), also known as White Wolf, who has harbored a crush on her for a while despite their difference in social status.

In its previously released stills, Lady and the Liar focused on its glamorous costumes and impressive settings. The preview reveals the drama’s darker side, with numerous action scenes, gun fights, automobile accidents, and even a clip of a man set on fire. By juxtaposing the initial scenes of Jiang Xin and Sheng Jiewen’s innocent romance with the subsequent events borne out of Du Xiaohan and Bai Zhengji’s desperation to stake their claim on life, Lady and the Liar highlights its tagline of “obsession and deception.”

Lady and the Liar is produced by well-known Taiwanese television producer Chen Yushan (陳玉珊), whose works include top-rated Taiwanese idol drama Fated to Love You <命中注定我愛你> and last year’s hit period drama Prince of Lan Ling <蘭陵王>. Formerly expected to air this summer, Lady and the Liar is now slated for a 2015 release.
